Before reading this article I did not know what I can pursue my career in if I change my mind about attending medical school. The educational path to becoming an orthopedic surgeon is long and difficult because it requires a high scholastic aptitude, mechanical ability, a high degree of manual dexterity, and excellent three-dimensional visualization skills (Career in Orthopaedics). Naturally one would expect such characteristics for such a prestigious career in the medical field. The educational path to becoming an orthopedic surgeon starts in high school. “An aspiring orthopedic should start preparing in high school with AP and international baccalaureate courses in science and math, plus related extracurricular activities such as volunteering at a medical center or blood drive” (Brick). The end of high school marks the beginning of eight challenging and competitive years amongst the brightest students around to be admitted to medical school and then succeed and graduate medical school.

Cardiac surgeons must graduate from high school, complete four years of college, four years of medical school, a 5-year general surgery residency and a 2-3 year specialized cardio or cardiothoracic fellowship. Surgeons who wish to specialize further in pediatric cardiology or heart transplant surgeries may require additional training. All cardiac surgeons must be certified in surgery by the American Board of Medical Specialists before seeking further certification for cardiothoracic surgery. Cardiothoracic surgeons need to obtain a state license. They often assist in surgery but will not be as hands on and will not be leading the procedure. They also make much less money than the surgeon, however they only require a fraction of the education. Pros to this career would be a decent pay with very little education, being able to work in the medical work, and less stress than a surgeon. For some jobs in the fields of surgery one only has to go to school for a short period of time but others, like an actual surgeon one has to go to school for 14-15 years to get their Doctorate of Medicine (MD). MDs also have to go to school for four years, then medical school for four years and then lastly do a surgical residency for 3-7 years.

As the ASC continued to grow in response to the increasing number of members, the procedures that were internalized not only increased, and were more complex. In February of last year my grandfather was having problems with his heart. He often complained about the feeling of pressure casting on to his chest so he went to the doctors in pursuit to figure out what is causing these menacing pains. To his discovery, the doctor examined his heart and explained to him that he would need to receive coronary artery bypass surgery. My family and I were scared of the risks involving the surgery but the doctor assured us that it is not as intricate as it sounds. So on February 23rd My grandfather went into have coronary artery bypass surgery and regrettably did not make it out alive. When I was filling out the questionnaires about possible career opportunities, cardiac surgery and psychiatry were the jobs that I liked the most within the career field best suited for my interests. Demand for the profession has steadily increased over the years, but different experts predict that as the baby boomer population ages, the demand for cardiac surgeons is dramatically increasing. The number of people over age 65 is expected to double in the next 20 years, from 35 million to more than 70 million. By 2025, the researchers say, there could be a 46 percent increase in the demand for cardiothoracic surgeons, but a drop of at least 21 percent in the number of available surgeons. This means that in addition to the increasing number of members of the older population, the number of trained and available surgeons is on the decline. There are no geographic restrictions on the availability of surgeons. They are needed everywhere in the world at any time. Where ever there are people, surgeons must be available to provide needed health care assistance. Also, the workload is not affected by seasons, as people tend to need medical care year-round. The time commitment for cardiac surgery is almost overwhelming. Doctors must be at the hospitals for long hours to make sure patients in need are treated.
