Career Two: Family Physician
Upon completing the career selector, I was not surprised to see Family Physician as an option, because I have always wanted to be a family physician. I feel as though, it fits my personality fairly well, and after completing the career selector, I was more confident that this job would be a good career for me. I know that I have the attributes and abilities required for the job, it offers high potential earnings, and I also know that I enjoy the general duties a family physician performs. I read the at a glance section, and read over the attributes and abilities required for the job, and felt that I do posses the majority of the attributes and abilities mentioned. Some of the characteristics that I feel I hold,

The working conditions consist of very long hours as well as irregular work hours, more so when beginning this career, with a considerable amount of administrative work. Most family physicians are also self-employed, which also comes with a lot of business related responsibilities in terms of running the practise. It can also become a challenge to balance a full-time career and family life as a family physician. Earnings for family physicians depends on experience, location of practise, and status of employment (self-employed, or employed by a hospital), similar to that of allergists. Typically, family physicians earn from $100 000 to $250 000 per year or more, which is slightly less than what allergists make, however, it is still a great amount of money. A sample career path could begin as a resident in Family Medicine, followed directly by being a Family Physician, then with years of experience becoming an established Family Physician. However, preceding this career path would be roughly eight years, if not more, of education. I am not surprised by most of the things that I learnt, however, I am shocked with how the working conditions sound so bleak, I knew that it was a demanding job, however after reading all the information about the working conditions, I was slightly discouraged. I know that nothing is impossible in life, and that if I really wanted to be a family physician, I would be able to make the working conditions work for myself, but I am now determined to job shadow a family doctor to see if I can actually handle the job. I don’t want to make a haste decision regarding my entire
The medical field is a career path that brings about many options and opportunities of great value. The noble idea of being a doctor tends to cloud the diligent studying and precise training that is actually required for this career. I have wanted to become a doctor since a very young age, and now that the opportunity is here for the taking, I have fully researched what it takes to succeed in this profession and various specialties of the practice. The road to a medical degree is one filled with thousands of notes, years of schooling, and many stressful nights, but the reward is one incomparable to any other. Saving people’s lives on a day-to-day basis has been one of my dreams for as long as I can remember, so the rigorous curriculum
I shadowed Dr. Martin Skie at the University of Toledo Medical Center when I started contemplating a career as a physician. He is an orthopedic surgeon and I had the privilege to shadow during several surgeries, and throughout clinical rotations. I spent over fifty hours shadowing him over the course of a month. I also had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Zachary Ginsberg, an intensivist, in Kettering Medical Center’s intensive care unit. I was able to discuss the patients, their conditions, the lab results, imaging studies, medications, procedures, and the science behind the thought process while shadowing for over one hundred hours over several months. Both opportunities provided insight into different specialties and sparked my interest.Since
My decision to pursue a career as a physician was not a blinding revelation, being the daughter of two immigrant parents the thought of becoming a physician seemed distant. In high school I pursued to obtain what for me was then the highest education I perceived I would be able to achieve which was going to college and obtaining a bachelor’s degree. As the quote by Ralph Ellison highlights, “When I discover who I am, I’ll be free”. This quote resonates with the start of my second year in college, as I have been able to find my passion for medicine. More specifically, I explored my values and how I wanted to shape my future. I reflected upon the encounters and dramatic effects that physicians have had with my own family. The most impactful
The career that I have decided to pursue is a physician assistant because this career seems like the right fit for me. A physician assistant, also known as a PA, practices medicine under a physician. Physicians assistants usually specialize in a certain area of medicine and they either work in private practices or hospitals. They partake in a wide range of jobs ranging from examining patients, ordering diagnostic tests, prescribing medicine, and many similar jobs that physicians do. In rural areas, PAs have the ability to be the primary physician because of the lack of physicians in the area. This career was located in my third top career cluster, health sciences, from the interest assessment and the career, was under the career pathway of therapeutic services. I feel like the I have the skills needed to fulfill this career because I enjoy helping people even though health sciences was not in my top five career clusters from the skills assessment.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” As a child, we have all been asked this question; and as unrealistic children, we all had dreams of being a superhero, princess, cowboy, or astronaut. Later on in life, as time went by, and as we became more knowledgeable, our answers became more serious. Some of us wanted to be teachers, business owners, or a veterinarian. However, I have always wanted to be a doctor, but not just any doctor. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a pediatrician. Now, half way through my junior year in high school, I have started to question the details of this career, and all the hard work it takes to become a part of the medical field.
With technology always changing and improving, these professionals constantly have to take classes, learning how to work with these databases. For example, a CNA, Melissa Rodrigues, was required to take three weekend classes to learn how to use a new EHR database effectively. Also, to keep their certification, physician assistants must complete 100 hours of continuing education every 2 years. Another requirement that just began in 2014 is that a recertification exam is required every ten years to keep a PA license. Many jobs require relocation, but as a PA, it isn’t common. Usually a person can find a job in this field almost anywhere there are hospitals, doctor’s offices, or people in need of medical attention.
On campus I’m associated with the FYRIS program. The top two research-driven courses are the Phylogenetics and taxonomy and supramolecular materials II. My immediate and future career interest is to enroll in a physician assistant school and practice medicine. Working in a hospital or other healthcare settings is something I can wake up and do every single day with a smile on my face. One thing that appeals to me the most about becoming a physician assistant is the endless opportunities. I have the freedom to examine patients, diagnose injuries, and provide treatments under supervision of physicians and surgeons. In Dr. Eli Greenbaum program the research focus of the field of molecular systematics which is very important to my major and career
As the educational requirements has changed over time there are a few basic step that have to be accomplished first. Anyone who’s trying to enter this field must with hold a high school diploma. Also have to take courses in english, biology, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, computer, and fundamental math. There are three education profession choices for a person trying to become a medical assistant. The first is two organizations a certified medical assistant (CMA) designated to the american association of medical assistants (AAMA) and a registered medical assistant (RMA) designated to the american medical technologist (AMT). The second option are a one to two year program taught by your allied health advisor and training at clinicals
I believe that in order to lead you must be able to learn how to follow first. Following will allow you to gain knowledge that will help you lead in the future. Serving is a big part of leadership because you must be able to help people. People put their trust into you to help them through their problems. As a leader you must be able to put other people’s problems ahead of yours.
Photo # 1 exhibits a Physician who specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology. As you can see from the photo, the physician is the one who is holding the yellow handled cautery while performing a cesarean section on a 39 week old mother. The Physician has completed several years of school. In order to even become a physician they must complete a four-year undergraduate degree, such as a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology. Students may consider taking courses in biology, chemistry, and anatomy and physiology. They must also pass the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) to gain entry into medical school. The next course is to complete a 4-year medical school program, internship and residency in a hospital. An internship is usually a year long, while a medical residency may last between 3-7 years. Finally they must receive a state licensure this is mandatory, licensure requires passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination in order to be an OB-GYN.
In terms of educational goals, I'm shooting high and am hoping to get into a good Ivy League school (such as Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, or Columbia) or at least one of the highly acclaimed medical schools (such as Stanford, John Hopkins University, or the University of California in San Diego). When I finally begin college, I'm planning on going into the Nurse Practitioner or Pediatrician field of medicine. As of my high school years, I'm keeping my grades up and doing well in school; I've been trying to step out of my comfort zone and do more things that will get me out into the "real world" such as volunteering more often and applying for various programs to prepare myself for the future such as this Perry Outreach Program. I'm
I am interested in the Research Associate Internship program because it will allow me to be competitive in a meaningful career, build professional skills, and give me more of a chance to succeed in my higher education. For example, my professional goal is to become a Physician Assistant, because I want to assist physicians in curing illnesses, alleviating pain, and helping patients to have better futures. By joining the medical field, I hope to serve our community more. To get a further understanding of the medical field, I volunteered at the Maimonides Medical Center for five months and had a great experience connecting with patients. As a patient representative, I was provided the chance to visit patients’ rooms at the surgical unit, where
In the future, I would like to be a family practitioner. I would like to be a family practitioner because I like to help people get well and seem them happy. Family Practitioners sets diagnoses, treats, and prevents diseases and injuries that commonly occur in the general population. They may refer patients to specialists when needed for further diagnosis or treatment. When I graduate high school I plan to go to college for at least 4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of medical school, and, depending on their specialty, 3 to 8 years in internship and residency programs. I plan to still be living in Mississippi, if God’s plan is for me to be living here. I chose to plan to be a practitioner because i always have wanted to do something
After countless hours of staring at a blank screen, waiting for an idea to magically appear about how to begin this essay, all of the sudden the light bulb in my head turned on. I am just a nineteen year old woman, fresh out of highschool compared to other students in this college, but knee deep in my first semester. I am a biology major, attending a liberal arts college, with the intent of becoming a Physician’s Assistant one day. The question of, “how on Earth am I supposed to sway the minds of people who are far more knowledgeable and intellectual than I am?” crossed my mind more times than I am proud to admit. If I had been asked to write this argument a few months ago, I would’ve found the words to begin the essay immediately, but my claims would not have been thoughtful or sufficient. Now that I have a few college courses and the experience of a liberal arts education under my belt, I have already noticed the changes and improvements. At this point, you might be wondering why any of this information is relevant. The fact is, in my few shorts months of attending a liberal arts college, I have already noticed a significant difference in the way I approach things in life. I have been taught how to think more deeply, how to consider every aspect of something, and it occurred to me that this is why it took me so long to begin this argument. Although some people might think I “wasted my time” or “over thought the little things”, this thought process will ultimately benefit
I chose three careers for my job evaluation matrix, which were Obstetrics and gynecology, Database administration and a Computer system analyst. The first career is obstetrics and gynecology. OB/GYNs are physicians specialized in treating female patients and can act as a woman 's primary doctor, but they also specialize in care related to pregnancies and the reproductive system. An obstetrician is a physician who delivers babies and a gynecologist is a physician who specializes in disease treatment of the female reproductive organs. They also identify, treat and monitor ailments related to the female anatomy, including breast cancer, cervical cancer, pelvic disorders, urinary tract infections and hormonal disorders. This career was rated based on the consideration of; salary (20%), education (15%), benefits (10%), Work conditions (hours, flex, conditions, travel, demands (15%), passion and interest (20%), and Current opportunities (20%) It had the highest weighted rating of all with an 8.75 on a scale from 1 to 10, because it is well paid with a mean salary of $222,400. It requires a high level of education I am to complete an Undergraduate Degree Program, Pass the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), Complete Medical School, Complete a Medical Residency, and Obtain Licensure. It demands a lot of educational finance. This career has great benefits (4 weeks paid vacation per year, paid sick/maternity leave and paternity leave, a comprehensive health coverage including
