Literature is a reflection of the period the author lived in as well as the ideas, societal norms, and political commentary they held about that time. In literature, an understanding of the historical context behind a work's creation can give us a fuller understanding of the narrative. For instance, within the gothic/horror genre, various authors including Sheridan Le Fanu decide to “historicize” the text by incorporating certain characters, and behaviors to reveal political, and social commentary of their societies’ time.
As previously stated, within literature, the historical context can help us understand the political commentary towards that period’s societal conditions. Therefore, in Sheridan Le fanu’s story “Carmilla”, the work was a political allegory towards the relationship between the Irish and British during the 1800s. As the main characters of the story, Laura and her father, were described living in an area of a “…lonely and primitive place, where everything is so marvelously cheap….” this can be a direct parallel towards the way of life that the Irish had during their decline of state, as many of the Irish during the 1800s had migrated towards other countries, and the ones that did stay were to some extent unaided. Consequently, further within the story, the historical context of the seclusion and unaided help the Irish hadn’t received can be embodied through Laura’s great desire to have a company. As Laura reveals about her own social life as such a
After Horace Walpole redefined the term “Gothic” with his literary form that mixed history and fantasy in a way that was meant to create wonder and terror, the term developed to take a on many interconnected meanings. These meanings include “Goths/Visigoths” which Edward Gibbon describes as “a general appellation of rude and warlike barbarism”(Moreland, slide 29). It is also a Medieval style of architecture and an “unwritten” constitution which describes the “ traditional balance of power in British politics between the royalty and the people”(Moreland, slide 31). The final meaning is that of Gothic fiction whose characteristics include: strong emotion (mainly terror/horror), antiquity, haunting, isolation, obscurity/mystery and/or monstrousness/grotesquerie. Among the 18th and 19th century fiction that draw upon and foreground these meanings are Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher and Stoker’s Dracula.
Think about life hundreds of years ago, think about their literature, and what their writings were based off. Society has a significant impact on art, music, and literature. Over the years American literature has evolved. This evolution is a reflection of history. Time periods reflect changes in society, politics, and religion. Each time period has a distinct characteristic. The evolution of literature is shown by
Beautiful imagery laced amidst a wondrous storyline, accompanied by memorable and lovable characters are all elements pertaining to enjoyable works of fiction. Tales that keep one up late into the night forever reading just “one more page” forever propelling the intrinsic imagination for a novel enthusiast. Yet, at times there are deeper meanings hidden between the lines. Symbols, analogies, and latent parallels all connecting to real life events and situations being portrayed by the author. Using literary theory can bring a more profound understanding of the reading material at hand, as well as unique insight as to what the author was feeling or intending to portray at the time of writing.
This will help my writing by encouraging me to incorporate facts where they seamlessly fit in the text, as opposed to placing historical elements in careless, literary locations that create a lackluster reading experience. By continuing to read texts from the historical fiction genre, an aspiring (as well as current) writer can monitor the various ways historical research affects a piece, whether it be in a positive or negative
Gothic literature is a style of writing dating back to 1764, some of the most important elements of this writing style are of an eerie setting and mental decay, stories that made great use of these elements are: “The Raven”, “Black Cat”, “The House of Usher”, and “The Devil and Tom Walker”. The authors use the gothic element of eerie setting so that they can enhance the mood of the story and of mental decay to highlight what the conflict in the characters’ lives is causing.
Knowing the historical context of a work is crucial to understanding both its general meaning and its deeper essence. Often times, authors use their works as outlets to freely express their personal feelings toward a social trend or issue. As such, the time in which a story is written can have a strong influence on the message the author is trying to convey to his or her reader. Their personal reflections can be asserted in many ways; among the most common being through the characters themselves and their development throughout the work, the setting, and the implied themes.
Literature is normally influenced by the time period in which it was written; whether it is war, poverty, or any other social movement. People write about the events that took place, or they just describe the time period, in like what many writers did during the Romantic Movement. Whether it is intentional or subconscious, an author cannot help
For years literature has been probed and prodded by students, teachers, scholars, and those just looking to pass the time. What all these readers can agree on is that any single work can be interpreted in a myriad of ways. Readers can derive interpretations on completely opposite sides of the spectrum, which can even go so far as to spark conflict or debate; thus, supporting Lemony Snicket’s argument that, the most “passionate and interesting pieces” of writing “divide” people in their opinions. Sometimes it is the writer’s intent to introduce a controversial issue to get people to question and argue, and other times the author merely presents a more relaxed or simplistic idea still knowing that readers can branch off of it in many different
Literature is susceptible to misconception. At times, the presentation of content, enticing details, and storyline take away from the morals and ideas being presented in a piece of text. Most times, as a result of focusing on the distracting elements of a novel, audiences fail to recognize the deeper meaning or purpose of why the author choses to include certain sections of a novel. A book’s intention is to accurately express an author’s thoughts, but, many times, the delivery of unfamiliar content results in fear and a lack of understanding from the reader.
Proceeding this research with a thorough analysis behind the story that was chosen to write this paper. It would be taken more in depth behind the story of the meaning why it was written and what historical event were currently happening to inspire the time it was written. There are many aspects to what a story is about based on the elements that is used to create the story. To be able to develop a story, a story must consider the plot, setting, time, the characters, point of view, style/tone, theme, and symbolism. Other inspirations such a environ, culture, and even psychological view, are some of the other reason to comprehend the story as its being told.
There are different forms and examples of exemplary and classic literature which have been deemed as significant works that are highly esteemed worldwide. These examples of literature would awe the world with how much literary skill they entailed when they were composed and written: attention to details as to formation of characters, the most crafty of plots, the most eloquent speeches and lines, the most astounding of twists of scenes, and most of all, the most universal and meaningful of themes. The theme of any literary work is what makes it great as it should be able to encompass the immense diversity of the world and as it would be able to transcend the boundaries of religion, age, race, gender, etc. Two examples of this great and
Since its conception, the importance of reading literature has only increased as it manifests in our schooling and recreation. What first started as religious texts and epics now brags titles that explore morality, historical events, and dystopias in order to educate and inform. Many of the now-classic literary pieces have managed to stay classics due to the timeless nature of their conflicts. These authors often explore conflicts that deal with morality, which forces the reader to think and consider their own moral stance, drawing him or her closer into the story.
In literature, history is crucial. History is society’s choice of which truth to present to the public as a way of hiding shameful pasts and controlling civilization. The use of history in literature represents how deception of society becomes a cycle of ignorance. Often times in literature, the author alters history to present a new version of the story, regardless of the fact that altering history could change an entire society’s beliefs. Ignorance of personal history provides society the opportunity to live daily lives without the burden of past transgressions weighing them down, but the ignorance comes at a cost of moral destruction. Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Natasha Tretheway’s Native Guard feature main characters who experience affects of the alteration of history, and in turn these adverse affects destroy their morals. Throughout history, soiled memories hide behind a more polished version of truth, which in turn creates a civilization bound to repeat the errors in ignorance. With the manipulation of history, distorted memories stem from warped versions of the past, which in turn creates a civilization bound to repeat the errors in ignorance.
The term gothic fiction implies a British literary genre from the late eighteenth, and early nineteenth century. The modernized term seems to have been generalized into anything that is dark, gloomy, or depressing. Gothic novels often time posses an emphasis on portraying the terror, a prominent use of supernatural circumstances, the presence of highly stereotyped characters, and the attempt to display techniques of literary suspense. There are also other parallels among this vastly popular genre. Gothic novels often time describe the city of London in corresponding ways. Also a common theme amongst gothic literary works is the duality of human nature, or the quality or characteristic of being twofold. These mutual themes are apparent in
New Historicism is a modern literary theory that focuses on how events, culture, and places within a society influence a written work. New Historicists analyze allusions to characteristics of the time period in which the work was written. By definition, new historicism seeks to discover the significance in a text by taking into account the work within the construction of the established ideas and assumptions of its historical era. Literary texts are entrenched with historical context and the author is seen as subject to the forces of the culture that he or she works within. New Historicists reject the New Critical principle that texts are autonomous and should be read without any comparison to history, and instead argue that texts are
