For my service learning project, I volunteered at the Tangipahoa Parish Animal Control Center. Since I love animals so much I knew this would be the best place to volunteer at. While volunteering there I got to learn many things while also meeting some amazing people. Each person welcomed me in and treated me as if they had known me forever. I never would’ve thought that communication could be related to volunteering at an animal shelter but, after I was finished I seen how it could be.
The Tangipahoa Parish Animal Shelter Control Centers main goal is to keep the public safe while also protecting animals. It is a governmental agency that’s under the Tangipahoa Parish Government. It was established more than a century ago back in 1997. There always constantly working hard to keep animals safe and they take in between 6,000 to 7,000 animals per year. You can really tell that they have a love for what they do each day. While I volunteered, I had three different duties. Those duties were to provide exercise for the pets by walking them, socialize, and play with the pets.
While volunteering the types of communication that was commonly used was face to face with the workers.

They have excellent staff that are willing to help. They greet each person that enters with a smile you will never see anyone frowning. I feel as if they love there jobs this is one thing you don’t see in many organizations. Each employee truly has a heart for helping and giving back to the community. Communication plays a big role in their success of the organization. Communication is key with them. They must communicate with one another, communicate with pet owners that are bringing in pets, and even communicate with those wanting to adopt pets. If they lacked good communication skills they would lose a lot of business. With the job, they do they have to be able to communicate with others to tell people about the
I chose to interview the SPCA of Wake County (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Wake County). The SPCA was founded in 1971, to take animals from high kill shelters. But they did not run as an effective shelter during this time. In 2003 they opened their adoption center, which is known for having a much better quality of care than most shelters, and the animals are housed very uniquely, with open rooms instead of cages for the cats and dogs. The mission of the SPCA is “To protect, shelter and promote the adoption of homeless animals; to provide education about responsible pet ownership and to reduce pet overpopulation through spay/neuter programs.” The SPCA offers adoption programs, volunteering, affordable food, vet care;
More than 9 rescue shelters have been rescuing animals that were dying in Hurricane Katrina. Many rescue companies had been putting tons of money and shelters in certain places in New Orleans. The companies that have been putting all their work into the devastating tragedies that happen in hurricanes are ASPCA, Hope for paws, and Animal friends. Tons of people were looking for their pets and animal rescue organizations said there was 350 pets that missing and 587 pets were recovered by the rescue pet organizations. ASPCA one of the greatest pet organizations in the world that lend a big hand. ASPCA had rescued 674 animals in Hurricane KASPCA has done a lot for animal lovers out there in the world. They have donated and given away money to families and pet owners that have pets suffering at
At church, in addition to my participation in the worship services, I volunteered at our church’s soup kitchen, medical camps and elementary school for underprivileged children. These experiences opened my eyes to the deprivation of love and care in the world and a dire need of God’s grace for people at large so they could receive forgiveness, healing and restoration in their lives.
Acts of service always created a desire in me to help make people’s lives better. People often put forth their best when
When most people think about Animal Control shelters, it usually negative. Animal control shelters get an unjust reputation of just being a place where unwanted, problem dogs go to be euthanized. I mean, you call the your local animal control office when you see a stray dog hanging around the neighborhood, right? They show up in a van or truck driven by a uniformed officer who carries a scary looking pole with a loop on it to catch animals. Well, there’s more to your local animal control shelter than just catching stray dogs and cats.
This past summer, I acquired an internship at Baldwin and Lyons, an insurance company in Indianapolis. Every Wednesday during my internship, a couple of employees and I would participate in a prodigious community service project, Meals on Wheels. Throughout the three months that I worked at Baldwin and Lyons, I got acquainted with some of the individuals whom we delivered to. These inspiring individuals were so grateful and appreciative that we took time out of our day to volunteer to do such a service. One elderly woman who we delivered to would sing to us as she came to the front door “good meals, good meals, good meals.” She is one woman that I will never forget. First going into this, I was elated knowing I was I getting out of the
As a student, I have demonstrated many works of service to my community and school. Service opportunities have shaped me into the person I am today and these projects have made me realize how fortunate I am for all that I have. While I've been doing these service projects through the years, it has been a pleasure seeing the joy on the faces of people that aren't as fortunate as I am. Service projects that I have completed include managing the fish booth at the St. Leo's Parish Festival, being an altar server at St. Leo's Parish, helping cook dinner for the Ridgway Fire Department during carnival day setup, participating in the St. Marys Light Up Night by dancing, and Christmas caroling to local residents. I also participated in a zombie/princess
I don’t know if I would have ever decided to volunteer at a shelter in St Paul if it wasn’t for this assignment; I am very thankful for this
While there are other organizations in Houston that provide basic services to dogs, cats, and other small pets, we provide the largest, highest-quality, and most complete
Catonsville emergency food ministries (CEFM), which provides food, and household supplies to the homeless and needy population, is where I did three hours of my service hours. All though this was not my first choice, as I thought I could not learn anything from it, and it would be boring and not engaging. I was wrong; I didn’t know the work and knowledge that went into planning, for the day to day operation of a food bank. The building itself was small, and lack adequate space for storage, and working. The week prior they lost all of their meat supplies due to a freezer malfunction, which left a slight death smell in the building. The volunteers were very nice and helpful in showing me around, and answering question. I was actually surprised that one of the volunteers was 16, and was doing it just to get out of the house.
They have incredibly dedicated staff members who are hospitable and friendly, this can be seen from the good experiences posted by 17 satisfied customers on hellopeter.com and from the customer questionnaires conducted and attached. One lady was welcomed into a milky lane at 10 PM on a rainy day after the store was closed and was offered a coffee by the manager who had closed the shop an hour earlier!
To ensure that our project would be very successful as a group we discussed how could we make a big impact. This discussion leaded us to deciding to dedicate our service-learning project to helping Veterans and how we could help them. We establish a connection with VET HOUSE, this connection was established though Johnnie Mapples who is a veteran and was associated with VET HOUSE. We connected Mr. Willard Smith who is the coordinator for VET HOUSE, he informed us what was needed and the current numbers of people that are currently in the program. From establishing the connection and gathering information on how many people needed help we discussed what we would like to do for them and how can we accomplish it. We decided to collect personal
It gave me the chance to vanquish my fears while also realizing that it is God’s plan for me to help out my community. However, I am not surprised that there are still unanswered questions in my head such as: Why is there such a big hunger problem? Why is this problem not spoken about more often? Is there any other way I can help stop this problem? This service has made me more knowledgeable and aware of my community. In addition, this service project has made me take matters into my own hands. Currently, every time my family goes grocery shopping I make sure they get at least five canned goods for donating. As more of my friends volunteer and more donations come in I think we can end this fight for hunger in southern Louisiana. In addition, I believe that we should all take a step back and be thankful for all that we have because some people don’t have such luxuries. God is omnipresent, He would not want to see His children starving. Finally, I see it as a mission that we volunteers get more people involved to volunteer for the greater
My visit at the shelter last was very meaningful. I enjoyed talking to Christina and Tina. I just wanted to mention to you that these ladies have great leadership skills. They are the reason my visit was worthwhile coming to the shelter that day. I was very glad I came, as I was able to get an abundance of information I needed for my future needs of this practicum. They were very helpful, and I really appreciated their assistance. They truly showed great leadership skills by helping me from the heart, as I could tell they did whatever they possibly could to help me, even though they had no idea that I was coming there, except the fact that a practicum student will be there. I was really impressed with their efforts to help me as much as they
