Taylor uses an example of a young girl named Cassie Logan , who is colored, that must stand up for her convictions despite many injustices against her and her family. Cassie proves her courage by protecting her little brother Little Man from getting in big trouble, facing her white enemy Lillian Jean Simms, and being helpful to T.J despite his actions against her family. Cassie made many choices that proved her sassiness and how outspoken she was. She loved her family and had deep respect for the land they lived on. During a time period when the word “equality” meant nothing to those who surrounded her, Cassie shows those who see her actions that she is willing to face the many consequences that lie before her with standing up for her beliefs.

In everyone's life, we are faced with situations which require us to summon the courage to solve problems. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem and Scout are faced with a number of situations requiring them to use courage to solve problems, They are courageous as they interact with Miss Maudie, Miss Dubose, Boo, Dill, and their father- Atticus finch. Controlling your fear in a difficult or stressful situation would also be considered courageous. Examples of courageous people in history are people like Helen Keller who conquered the disability of being deaf and blind at the same time and Martin Luther King had courage when he took a stand in the fight of racial discrimination (Pettinger). Even the firefighters and policemen dealing with the 9/11 attacks that put their lives on the line, so they could save the citizens that were in danger would be considered to have a lot of courage (Pettinger).
