The article, “Hot flashes in menopause may have genetic links”, by Catharine Paddock is relevant to our class because it addresses an important topic of women’s biology and period of time in women life. When we discussed the topic of menopause we went over the perimenopause which is the signs of women experiencing menopause like headaches. Similarly in the article Paddock explained the symptoms of hot flash and night sweats women commonly expressed during or after menopause. We learned in class about the symptoms but we did not explore further into it to understand why this occurs in the women’s biology. The most relevant idea from this article is the finding Paddock concluded, that there might be an association between menopause and genes,

Hot flashes are one of the many side effects of cancer treatment. A hot flash is defined as “a subjective sensation of heat that is associated with objective signs of cutaneous vasodilation and a subsequent drop in core temperature” (Kaplan, Mahon, Cope, Keating, Hill & Jacobson, 2011). Another description of a hot flash is a “sudden sensation of intense warmth that begins in the chest region and rises to the neck and face” (Loprinzi, Barton & Rhodes, 2001). Hot flashes are difficult to measure because they are a subjective experience. Electronic monitoring devices have been used to assess skin temperature and objectively measure hot flashes (Carpenter, 2005). Hot flashes cause discomfort and can affect a patient’s quality of life, especially when associated with night sweats, sleep disruption, and mood swings (Loprinzi, Barton & Rhodes, 2001).
Menopause happens due to the decrease of estrogen in the female body which then leads to the
Due to an effect of gabapentin at the level of hypothalamus to regulate the temperature, it can also be used as an effective non-hormonal therapy for hot flashes, a bothersome problem of menopause. It is shown to be more efficacy if used in patients with hot flashes that associated with sleep interference [17].

On the article “Nature or Nurture – Will Epigenomics Solve the Dilemma?” by Beata Plonka. Plonka explained how genes and behavioral traits affect a person. One of the most famous attitudes is the FOXP2 gene, also known as the “language gene”. FOXP2 is a severe speech and language disorder. The third question, all three except Charles answered that men and women are the same.
When it comes to men and women, there are physiological differences when it comes to hormones. Also, there can be physiological differences among women as well, such as Helen and Jill as it relates to hormones. Being that Jill is an older woman, she could be experiencing hot flashes. Helene could suffer from PMS. Based on the comments among the family members, it is evident that there is a tremendous difference physiologically.
In this article, researchers wanted to assess the effects of estrogen and progesterone treatment on visual and verbal cognitive function in postmenopausal women. In the abstract, researchers identified estrogen, progesterone, and synthetic progestin as the hormones in question. However, researchers did not identify the ultimate reason why these hormones were important to women who experienced menopause. In fact, the researchers did not define postmenopausal women, the symptoms they experience, or the need for hormone treatment. This presents a minor flaw; without detailing the importance of the study, it gives off the perception that the researchers were only researching a particular topic they were interested in, comparing studies
Recently she isn’t having any speech therapy, she can remember things much better and she only go to physical therapy once a week, so it is very interesting to know that she is getting much better and improving every day which is a positive result toward her health. Based on the article “Menopause, Local Biologies, and Cultures of Aging.” by Lock and Kaufert, said, “Researchers have described women as facing a dramatic increase in the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, stroke, and Alzheimer’s, all as the result of the impact of changing hormone levels, particularly the decline in estrogen.” Which mean, women are subjective in biological changes during their sage of life. It is very difficult to see those types of symptoms occurring unless
