Homelessness is a big part of our society. We see them every day. We see them sitting by the road on a cardboard box and holding a sign asking for help. According to the article “Top Causes of Homelessness in America,” by Home aid stated that 3.5 million Americans are homeless in America. There are things can cause people to become homeless, such as losing a job or getting fired, getting a divorce, natural disaster, and loss of a loved one. Other reasons why a person decides to remain homeless. It could be doing drug or drinking alcohol can both lead to a result of violence or mental illness. The three most common causes of homelessness are the natural disaster, divorce and losing a job.
First, the primary cause of the homelessness is the natural disaster. A flood, hurricane, or earthquake can be big and it can destroy people’s house and their belonging. According to the article “Everybody Deserves a Roof,” added that about 700,000 Americans became homeless after hurricane Katrina in 2005.” People suffered severe material damage and lost their important things like credit cards and documents. Many became homeless after the natural disaster because they didn’t get enough help from the organization and the government. Natural disasters also cause lots of death, and homeless people get affected the most. Natural disasters not just cause lots of death but it also spread diseases. For example flooding can result in polluted water, which can let to bacterial in water. When a
Homelessness is defined as the situation of an individual or family without stable, permanent, appropriate housing, or the immediate prospect, means, and ability of acquiring it. It is the result of systemic or societal barriers, a lack of affordable and appropriate housing, the individual/household’s financial, mental, cognitive, behavioral or physical challenges, and/or racism and discrimination. Most people do not choose to be homeless, and the experience is generally negative, unpleasant, stressful and distressing6. Homelessness is a problem that affects every Canadian town or city, and is one that is dealt with using a variety of different methods.
Such as, unpredicted financial crisis, abuse or neglect, mental issues, and physical issues. “National Alliance to End Homelessness.” Endhomelessness.org, 2015. Mon. 16 Nov. 2015.: Families become homeless, “...as a result of some unforeseen financial crisis.” They also become homeless due to “medical emergencies, car accident, or a death in the family.” Youth and children are known for becoming homeless, “due to family conflict, divorce, neglect, or abuse.” Veterans become homeless because of, “physical disability, mental anguish, and p.t.s.d.” “National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness.” StudentsAgainstHunger.org, n.d. Mon. 16 Nov. 2015. : Another reason these groups are homeless is due to, “Economic factors: serve lack of affordable housing and Political factors: cuts in federal assistance.” How can the U.S. focus, and solve, the problem of
I find it is most appropriate to begin with the causes of homelessness in America. The circumstances are unique and it is difficult to pinpoint one main cause. As stated in the most recent annual survey by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, major cities across the country report that the top four causes of homelessness among families were: lack of affordable housing, unemployment, poverty, and low wages. The same report found that the top causes of homelessness among solitary individuals were lack of affordable housing, unemployment, poverty, mental illness accompanied by the lack of needed services, and substance abuse. For women in particular, though, domestic violence is the primary reason for experiencing homelessness.
Homelessness in America has existed for some time now, but has grown and changed majorly over the years since the 1980’s. According to Mary Hombs, “the prevailing stereotype of a homeless person was that of a middle-aged white urban male alcoholic” (6). But now there is no stereotype because homelessness could happen to anyone at any moment, so that is why it important to be aware. Millions of people in this country do not have a place to live including whole families, children, veterans, and even the mentally ill. Going day after day without food or shelter. Throughout this paper the main focus will be answering the questions: What is homelessness?; What are the main causes of homelessness?: Who is the homeless?; and How do the people of this country assist the homeless?
Many causes become the answers to homeless people. The most easy understanding of homelessness is they don not have houses. Homeless people live in the streets because they do not have a house, but every homeless person does not have a house since he was born is impossible. First, shortage of substance use is the major part for
One of the dominant factors causing homelessness include physical or mental disability. This occur mostly with armed forces veterans who had been to war zones or fought to wars then discharged because of having post-traumatic stress disorder {PTSD} or their limbs chopped off reducing mobility. People with disability
There are many causes that cause homelessness. These causes are unemployment, lack of affordable housing, and poverty. One of the biggest causes of homelessness ismany New Yorkers being unemployed. When one is unemployed the tend to lose everything they have. For example, if a person was to become unemployed and had a house or car, they'll eventually lose the car or the house and become homeless without the job. The second big cause is the lack of affordable housing. Many New Yorkers know the struggle of not finding affordable housing. While living in New York many people come across housing that they can't afford being that rent is increasing as more buildings are being made and people from other countries move into New York. The last but not least big cause is poverty.those who are dealing with poverty are families that are hanging on a thread. Families who are living in poverty are also extremely poor families. These families struggle to keep
Theories of homelessness can extend from many things like natural disasters, domestic violence, loss of a job, loss of a loved one, mental illness, and sometimes even depression. There
We all know around 3.5 million people become homeless each year. However, the main question some of us don’t know is why? I read up on some sources online and found out that some of the problems have to do with job loss, divorce, natural disasters, family disputes or other impairments such as physical disabilities and depression. A lot of these type of factors could push anyone into living outside. People who are newly homeless have to challenge themselves and figure out how to get back their old lives. Organizations building emergency shelters and transitional housing usually work with a lot of service providers whose jobs are to provide
Homelessness is an epidemic that affects millions of people all over the world. These people have no place to live, are rarely able to bathe, and they have little to no food to eat. There are many reasons why people become homeless, but they can be broken down into three categories; Structural factors, systematic failures, and individual and relational factors.
The primary causes of chronic homelessness include poverty, disability, mental illness, along with substance abuse or addiction. Poverty is a challenging but is a doable cycle to break and becomes progressively difficult to get out once you begin to fall behind a specific income level. Once people reach that point they are then usually not able to obtain the proper resources for the acquired knowledge and resources that are necessary for a higher paying job. Disability affects an immense percentage of the homeless. This is frequently caused by an injury that prevents them from working numerous jobs within their societies and without their dependable
Homelessness has become a serious problem in today’s society. Despite the organizations that help multitudes of homeless people, homelessness is continually increasing. In recent years, America’s culture has been changing due to economic, political, and social issues. These issues have caused a lot of stress on America resulting in abject poverty in several cities. Poverty is not nationwide, but if dealt with lightly, the affects can be catastrophic. Homelessness is increasing more than ever, and research proves that changing culture contributes to rising amount of homelessness.
Many reasons for worsening situation of homelessness in the country have been reported but none has gathered as much support as poverty. Poverty alone accounts for major increase in homeless households while other possible reasons include loss of job, eroding job opportunities, lack of public assistance and lack of affordable housing facilities. Despite these being powerful reasons, they are all linked to one major reason i.e. poverty.
To begin with, individual conditions are major causes of homelessness, and they are quite numerous. For instance, the past of the individuals could be packed with shocking events. Some people have really hard time getting over them, and they always cause them many psychological or physical problems that may hinder their development in life. Shocking events may include loss of job or money. Research (as cited in Gowan, 2010) shows that 22.61% of homeless people are not working seriously to earn enough money. In addition, personal crises, whether social or economic have a huge impact on the individual’s present situation. If someone faces bankruptcy they have a higher chance of facing homelessness in the future. Also, mental illness
The primary cause of homelessness is poverty, however, they are other causes such as addictions, mental and physical health. According to Lindsay Phillips (2015) quantitative responses on perceived
