The Cold War, which took place from 1947 until 1991, was a state of military and political tension between the United States and The Union of Soviet Socialists Republic with their allies. It is called the Cold War due to there being no actual fighting between the two sides, it was fought using other more secretive methods. There were multiple reasons as to why this war developed, this paper will be discussing the three main ones. The Cold War developed between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialists Republic because of the disagreement of NATO and other countries on how the USSR as well as the German governments should be run; the threat of communism spreading across the western hemisphere; and these same nations disagreeing on the process of rebuilding after World War 2.
The disagreement of the United States and its allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization with the USSR was one of the main factors that influenced the start of the Cold War. The Soviet Union was promoting the spread of their government and the communist regime, while the United States and its allies were promoting democracy and free elections in all the neighboring nations. “This required the establishment of pro-Soviet governments and, so Stalin believed, the exclusion of western influence from the region. Since the Red Army had conquered most of Eastern Europe on its victorious march to Berlin the Soviets were in a strong position to get what they wanted.” As you can imagine, the United
during the Cold War are very strained according to historians. There are a few documents that demonstrate their differences. In document D, Henry Luce states, “Americans were unable to accommodate themselves spiritually and practically to that fact. Hence they have failed to play their part as a world power-a failure which had had disastrous consequences for themselves and for all mankind.” Luce is saying that the USSR is unsure of the American’s ability to keep the power that they have. Luce is on the side of the USSR. In document F, Winston S. Churchill says, “Nobody knows what Soviet Russia and its Communist international organization intends to do in the immediate future, or what are the limits, if any, to their expansive and proselytizing tendencies.” What Churchill was trying to say was that whatever the USSR is planning on doing in their future, which causes the U.S to distrust them. In document H, it states, “The Germans were able to carry out the invasion through these countries by reason of the fact that these countries had governments inimical to the Soviet Union.” This piece of evidence shows how the USSR got other countries to carry out their
DBQ: Containment The US and the Soviets have constantly had disagreements and conflicts throughout the Cold War. The main conflicts were the Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Berlin Airlift. This essay is going to explain what containment is and how the US used containment against the Soviets. Containment is when someone is trying to prevent something else from spreading and US used it by preventing the communist government of the Soviet Union from spreading. The US and its allies tried anything they could to contain communism.

Who was to blame for this war? The Soviets or the United States? Both made

During World War II the United States and the Soviet Union were allies, but by 1950, their relationship had disintegrated and the two nations were engaged in a “Cold War.” The “Cold War” occurred due to efforts by both nations after the war to maintain influence in regions like Eastern Europe for the Soviets and Turkey and Greece for the United States, but the “Cold War” wasn’t limited to these disputes. The “Cold War” was influenced by many factors on the United States side including the creation of and dropping of atomic bombs by the United States on Japan in 1945, the Truman Doctrine and the X Article in 1947, the Berlin Airlift and the Marshall plan in 1948, the formation of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) in 1949,
One of the most controversial topics among historians is the origins of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union (USSR). The war began in 1947 right after the end of World War II and lasted until 1991. This war was more of a time period of competition among powers, than an actual war, which lasted 44 years. They faced problems of ideologies of free-market capitalistic America versing communistic Russia, geopolitics, and an economic struggle between two former World War II allies. Historians have long argued and taken many different sides on who started the Cold War. These views have been categorized into: realism/traditionalism, revisionism, and post-revisionism. Nevertheless the rivalry between the two superpowers was tense. To understand the underlying problems between the USSR and the United States, it is crucial to go back into history and reflect on pre World War II.
The Soviet Union and the west also formed political alliances to combat the other side. Western Europe and the United States formed NATO,a military pact. The Soviet Union created a similar pact, the Warsaw Pact, between the states within the Soviet Union. These military coalitions put a greater threat behind the growing conficts by involving more countries. These military alliances were supplemented by two edicts set by the Soviet Union and the United States. The United States issued the Truman Doctrine, which stated that they would support those countries resisting communism. Likewise, the Soviet Union later issued the Brezhnev Doctrine which decreed that the Soviet Union would intervene with force in order to protect communism in its satellites.
There were many major events that escalated the Cold War, however, three in particular, seemed to of had the biggest effect. The first event was the Berlin Blockade that occurred from June 24, 1948 to May 12, 1949 (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, 2016). The Berlin Blockade was an attempt from Russia to prohibit supplies entering Berlin via water, road, and rail (Findley, 2011). The next event occurred on August 29, 1949 when the Soviet Union tested their first atomic bomb (Norris, 2016). This caused both countries to engage in a nuclear arms race that led directly to the last major event. The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred when the Soviets placed missiles in Cuba, upsetting the United States and bringing the world to the brink of nuclear war (Findley, 2011). While there were many causes and events that escalated the Cold War, the Berlin Blockade, Soviet bomb test and the Cuban Missile Crisis had a strong influence on escalating the war.
The origins of the Cold War, as well as its developments have become one of history's largest debates, with many different answers and opinions. The suggested explanations of these origins and developments all demonstrate different viewpoints of militaristic, political and economical factors. Conferences, political tension, The Cold War, its origins, and its developments inevitably emphasize the collapse of the alliance between USA and USSR after the defeat of Germany in World War 2.
The Cold War was a standoff between the U.S. and the USSR(Soviet Union) to prove the superiority of its technology, its military and its political-economic system. The Cold War also consisted of the Space Race. The Space Race started in the late 1950s and ended in 1969 when the U.S. landed a man on the moon. During this time period space wasn’t the only thing on people's minds, there was still the lingering threat of a nuclear bomb being dropped both in Russia and the U.S.. The U.S. was the first to drop a nuclear bomb, but the Russians quickly stole the design and made some for themselves. During the Cold War there were so many things such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Bay of Pigs, the Berlin Wall, and the Space Race.
The Cold War is named “cold” because there was little to none actual armed battles. It was shortly after World War II and was started between the United States and the Soviet Union. There were many differences including the perspectives from both sides of the War, however, there were also positive outcomes as a result of the Cold War. The war lasted approximately forty years and was a true test of power between the two enemies. The cold war lasted so long that is considered an era. The two parties believed that one another were out to get each other. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the political and military relations between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War. John Lewis Gaddis, the author of The
Not too long after the World War II, Cold war appeared. Cold war is a political and military tension which was happened in 1947 to 1991.
