You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads. ”(New International Version, Leviticus 20:27) They say hindsight is 20/20 and that can be taken a whole new level when talking about the Salem Witch Trials. Baseless accusations made by chatty housewives and jealous neighbors leading to 20 innocents dead seems like neighborhood drama taken to an extreme, gruesome level but you have to understand the circumstances surrounding it. Yes the citizens of salem were die hard puritans with an unrivaled displeasure for non-conformists and sinners but they were also people. They were scared and in need of an explanation for suspicious happenings. It can be drawn that the Salem witch trials were not only caused by the desire to remove witches but also by preexisting tension, sexism, and ergot poisoning. The roots of the epidemic can be traced back to a flood of refugees that was sent into the small town of Salem, Massachusetts following King William’s War. The small town was overflowing and this lead to a strain on resources and patience. The original residents were growing increasingly frustrated and tensions were mounting. There was also tension between Salem Town and Salem Village. The two were wildly different and frequently had petty disputes.
