Due to the wage inequality, women are less able to save for their retirement and thus more likely to be poor in their senior years. According to Stats Canada, women 65 or over are more likely than their male counterparts to live on a low income. The wage gap not only affects women financially, the risk of falling into poverty can force women to stay in abusive relationships, despite the danger.
“Join the union, girls, and together say Equal Pay for Equal Work” -Susan B. Anthony. Countless women, even here in the U.S. have some sort of the wage gap. The wage gap is the difference between the median earnings of women relative to median earnings of men. In this case, women earn a significant amount less than men. Although the wage gap has gotten smaller over the years, the wage gap still has a long way to go. Women deserve better than just minimum earnings. Full time, working women should obtain the best promotions and benefits. Women that work just as tough and have the equivalent qualifications as men do still earn less, and that is just unacceptable. The wage gap should be abolished on behalf of women of color and their struggle, equal pay is a global problem, equal pay benefits employers and workers, and the wage gap accumulates over time.
Even though there is an Elimination Act of all forms of discrimination against women in 1979 the United States still continue to bridge a gap in wages. When you look at the wage gap you can clearly see the difference in gender and it is much worse for people of color. The wage gap is not just a gender issue it also affects racial minorities. Asian American women experience the smallest gender pay gap. The Hispanic and Latina women had the largest gap with 54 percent of what the white men were paid in 2013. The gender pay gap for American Indian and Alaska Native women has went down to 60 and 59 percent in 2013. As for African American women they are paid 64 percent of what white men were paid in 2013 and white women were paid 78 percent of what white men were paid ( Catherine, H). Over the years the wage gap is in fact improving but only by a small percentage. In 2012 the wage gap was 77% and in 2013 the
In 1920, Women first acquired to right to vote after years and years of fighting to achieve it. This would be the first measure toward equality for women. During WWII while all the men were fighting in the war, women built the weapons for them. We later entered the workforce after the war. It currently shown now that there is a 20 percent wage gap for women. But did anyone know that in 2015 there was a 21 cent wage gap between men and women? Which means that the only difference between the wage gap issue as of last year and now is a 1 cent difference. So tell me, what do you think that wage gap is caused by, or better yet what is it? Well there are many different opinions, to some the wage gap is merely a percentage that
On a broader aspect, it says men and women are equal. Though at a bottom level, women are still struggling to occupy the same status as men in the outer world. Stratification between the two genders is seen everywhere including the household or the workplace. Even today, women still earns less as compared to men involved in the same profession. Like a male physician makes $140,000, while a female in the same profession makes $88,000. Statisticians at the US census bureau looked at almost 821 occupations. After adjusting for workers’ ages, education and work experience, they found a substantial gender gap in the earnings of the workers. Scholars at the Census Bureau studied several characteristics and after taking into
The U.S.A is widely perceived to be a nation of freedom by other countries but it seems very restrictive on some issues it has been battling since it was founded. America’s population needs to change many things before it can truly be name the “Land of the free”. The definition of freedom is flexible but it’s doubtful that discrimination and intolerance is in any of them.
First off, women in America can’t make as much money as the average white male, as stated before. This is an issue for women across the states, and while most people could simply assume that women just tend to pick lower paying jobs, which is only slightly true, women still tend to make less money in ALL jobs and fields compared to men. However, 21% is simply the average wage gap throughout the nation. In certain states, such as Louisiana, the gap is even higher at 35%. Equally important, this gap can increase even more based on their race as well. Compared to white men, black women make 63% of their annual wage. For Pacific Islanders, 62%. For Hispanic women, it’s as low as 54%. On a bigger scale, this means that for every $100 that the average white male makes, the average Spanish woman can only make $54.
Gender wage gap is the one type of discrimination that has received the most outcry. Wage gap affects women of all races, especially African Americans and Hispanics. Your mother, your sister, niece, aunt, grandmother and your daughters are affected by this gap in pay. Gender wage gap affects everyone because it tell you that we all live in a society that judges someone's worth based on thier sex and not their ability and qualifications. Hispanics and Latinos are paid 55 cents to an average man’s dollar, an African American woman is paid 60 cents, a white woman 77 cents to every man’s dollar. Gender wage gap does not only focus on paying women less but paying women that are minorities way less. This is a social problem that began years ago, Although the government is making strides to eradicate gender wage gap we still have a long way to go. This disparity should be everyone's concern not just women. This wage gap leaves working woman and their familie shortchanged because the gap translates into $10,762 less per year for an average working
The Wage Gap is unfair and it needs to be fixed, women should have the same equal rights as men. Women can have the same job as men, work the same amount of hours and still not receive the same amount of pay which is simply wrong. The Wage Gap is not fair for women, how much pay that you receive should not be determined by your gender. Women make 79 cents for every dollar earned by men, the wage gap for that is 21 percent. The Wage Gap is the difference in pay between two people.
“The gender pay gap is also pervasive. Regardless of her education, her occupation, her race, or her age, a full-time working woman (getting the median wage for women of that group) is paid less than a full-time working man (getting the median wage for men of that group).” (John Miller). With this gender gap poverty rate are going down as much are we want, Also the women retirement plan is not as great because of their
The gender wage gap has been going on since the 1960s till today. The wage gap for full time/year round workers is 21.4%. A women’s median annual earnings is $39,621 and men’s median annual earnings is $50,383. The main reason for the wage gap is gender inequality. Society has made women seem weaker and less powerful than men. To really get into depth, the wage gap is worse for women of color. It is proven that women of color get worse pay than a caucasian woman. For latinos,
The gender wage gap is the difference in men and women’s annual salaries and can be found in every kind of job at all times. The gap stems from prejudice against women workers, resulting in women receiving less pay than men do for the same work. As of 1999, women make up sixty percent of the workforce and are the main income provider for four of every ten families. Yet, in 2015, the median annual income for women was $40,742 and $51,212 for men. That is eighty percent of what men are earning, or a twenty percent wage gap. In the past half-century there has not been a consistent decrease in the wage gap: in 1960 women were earning sixty-four percent of men’s annual income, in 1978 they were earning fifty-nine percent, and in 2000 they were
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the state of Iowa, women only make 77% of what men make (Leith). That means for every dollar that a man makes, a women only makes 77 cents. The pay gap is the gap between how much women get paid and how much men get paid. Women make significantly less than men do. At the rate that this pay gap is moving, women will not have equal pay until the year 2152 (Miller). Some people will argue that it is this way because of the types of jobs that women take, but that is not the truth. The gender pay gap is the biggest issue facing our generation because it continues to increase over time, there are many factors that go into the pay gap other than just gender, and the wage gap results in
This wage gap is making women get less money than men, which will hurt women when trying to retire. The solution could easily be fixed if the US government tried harder to enforce the Equal Pay Act and created more laws and acts in order to stop the wage gap. The gender wage gap is ridiculous and more should be put into closing it. There is absolutely no reason that the women in the US should have to deal with getting less money than their male co-workers. The US gender wage gap gives people the idea that women are not equal to men, which is absurd. In conclusion, the ideas that keep the wage gap persisting and the effects the wage gap has on people is why the wage gap needs to be
For several decades, most American women occupied a supportive, home oriented role within society, outside of the workplace. However, as the mid-twentieth century approached a gender role paradigm occurred. The sequence of the departure of men for war, the need to fill employment for a growing economy, a handful of critical legal cases, the Black Civil Rights movement seen and heard around the nation, all greatly influenced and demanded social change for human and women’s rights. This momentous period began a social movement known as feminism and introduced a coin phrase known in and outside of the workplace as the “wage-gap.”
