Celebrity reporting: should you be concerned? Recent media reports suggest that Justin Bieber is desperate to claw back some popularity. He’s lost it. How come the tide has turned? Is this the inevitable outing of a fake or something else? He’s been charged with assault, supposedly going to ridiculous lengths to gain approval by performing in Lip Sync Battle and allegedly taking illicit drugs with fellow artist Cody Simpson. But let’s look at these reports more closely. Taryn Ryder reported in ‘Yahoo Celebrity’ that Bieber pleaded guilty to the assault. The report featured a prominent photograph of a smiling Bieber coupled with the claim that his current tour is an ‘apology tour’. These words and images suggest that Bieber is unremorseful and that there is something serious for which he needs to apologise. The words ‘he can’t escape the past’ influences the reader to believe that there are skeletons in his closet. However, the assault occurred after a motor vehicle incident with stalking paparazzi. Put yourself in his shoes, how would you react to this type of continual invasion of privacy and pressure? The Judge who sentenced him was clearly of the view that there were aggravating circumstances, absolutely discharging him from the offence with a $750 fine for careless driving.
