There are many books that have been banned or challenged nationwide. Books get banned and challenged for a variety of reasons. Olive’s Ocean, by Kevin Henkes, was removed from the shelves due to several claims of it having sexual content and inappropriate language. A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials based on the objections of a person or group. A challenge against a book is a formal written complaint that requests a book to be removed. Challenges aren’t just someone expressing their point of view; they’re an attempt to remove material from educational places. Challenges are viewed as a threat to freedom of speech and choice. The First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech, which includes the right to read and write …show more content…
The American Library Association defines censorship as the removal, suppression, or restricted circulation of literary or educational materials. Censorship can be subtle, almost unseen, as well as blatant and overt, but nonetheless, harmful. The abilities to read, speak, and express ourselves freely are core values. Throughout history many different governments and people have tried to ban books for many different reasons. People attempt to ban books because the material conflicts with their own beliefs. Some people believe that a child’s parent should be the only one able to censor what a child reads. Librarians and governing bodies should maintain that parents and only parents have the right and responsibility to restrict things from their children. According to the challenges by initiator, institution, type, and year, parents challenge books more often than any other group. The subject is very controversial causing many disagreements. Some people may believe that a book is wonderful, while others believe that it’s corrupting the youth. Books are banned to protect people, mainly children, from difficult ideas and information. Nudity, drugs, religious viewpoint, …show more content…
The ALA office for intellectual freedom promotes awareness of challenges towards library material. The ALA promotes the freedom to choose and the freedom to express one’s opinion. The ALA OIF compiles lists of challenged and bans as reported to the media and submitted to them. The ALA has formed a banned books week, which is celebrated the last week of September each year. Banned books week brings national attention to the consequences of censorship. The ALA also supports librarians that are facing challenges to materials in their libraries. Banned books are usually removed from libraries or schools. Online resources such as e-books and educational websites are also being blocked and filtered in libraries. People believed that e-books were virtually censor proof and that they would reduce the number of books being banned. Teachers in Colorado were subject to be removed if they were caught teaching from the school boards banned books list. There are more laws regulating public schools than public libraries. The Supreme Court deals with many cases about censorship and banning books. In 1982 the Supreme Court decided that the Constitution does not permit the official suppression of
Providentially, committed teachers, students, parents, librarians, among other individuals have evolved to challenge the existing ideologies on book banning (Niccolini & Alyssa 22). According to the American Library Association (ALA), a good percentage of these challenges are steered by parents. Public libraries, school and university libraries, businesses as well as classrooms across the world have made great attempts of trying to ban literature on quite a regular basis. According to the executive director of the National Coalition Against Censorship, attempts steered towards book-banning or censorship are encountered on a weekly basis. Banned books and articles range from centuries-old classics to contemporary bestsellers, from historical and biographical nonfiction to fictional narratives and finally from adults’ erotica to children fairy tales. This paper therefore seeks to highlight circumstances that a book should be banned or challenges and the considerations to be put into account in such decisions.
For example, some people can find certain works offensive, usually due to reasons such as language, violence, sexual content, or the lifestyles portrayed in the pages. However, I would like to point out that if someone does not agree with something, or if they find it offensive, they can exercise their freedom of choice and choose not to read the book. It should not be up to a portion of the public to decide what is acceptable for others. If we start denying this freedom of choice as it related to books that are available in our libraries, what will the next step in denying our freedom of choice? If one stops to think of why we love to live in the United States, freedom has to be at the top of this
The American Library Association has recorded a total of 275 books that were challenged in 2015, The Holy Bible was one of the top 10 most challenged books. The challenging and banning of books is a huge item in the United States of America. The American Library Association has a week devoted to banning books which takes place the last week end of September. Banned Books Week for 2016 will be September 25 through October 1. It is not ethical to ban books due to content such as: language, sexually explicit, unsuited for age group, and homosexual situations
Books have been banned throughout history by rulers who want to control their subjects. In the famous novel Fahrenheit 451, books were illegal and any books that were found were to be immediately burned. Basic human rights of these imaginary citizens seemed to have been violated, but these key examples are nothing like book banning in schools. Books are banned in school libraries every year; they are singled out for having inappropriate content, which some believe should not be allowed to be read by students. Content that should not be read by students includes profanity, racial slurs, violence, and sexual situations. Unlike in the past, people are allowed to argue against the banning of books
In the article for banned books, that I found on the internet, the page explains what a librarian's, perspective is on banning books. Sharon Coatney is a librarian at a small high school. She says that the books or library was literally in a cage, so the students had very little access to the books. Coatney tells us that, “libraries have specific policies that are followed in selecting books for inclusion in the collection”. This means that the school library are not banning books, but they are selecting specific books that “supports the curriculum”, and that is “age appropriate”. Her job, as a librarian, is to “select”, and not “censor”. Lastly, she says that the hardest part of her job, is to “constantly keep in balance all viewpoints, not push my own agenda and remember that the education and safety of all students is my top priority”. She
Many famous works by many famous artists have been repeatedly challenged. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is one of the most frequently challenged books of all time. Many schools and towns have banned this book from their libraries, saying it "perpetuates racism." Call of the Wild by Jack London has been repeatedly fought against because it is thought of as inappropriate for kids because of it's violence and morbidity. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling has been the target of much hate and criticism, especially from the Christian community. The books have been burned by churches all over the world for promoting the occult, and there have been many attempts to ban the series in public schools. Judy Blume is another one
Libraries everywhere are being imprisoned. Libraries are supposed to be filled with books of all subjects, but every day certain books are locked out of and banned from libraries. Everywhere, even in countries where freedom of speech is protected, censorship of books takes place (Currie-McGhee 27). Censorship refers to restricting the access to something. Some people think that certain books contain content that should not be read, and that they are protecting people by censoring it. However, books are full of information, and while some of the content may be controversial, that information can help people and communities and should be available to everyone. Certain books should not be banned from schools and libraries because this limits
Books can be censored for violence, political incorrectness, language, strong romantic scenes, and witchcraft. The government can ban books for having different political views, or if they are threatening to the state. To ban a book, someone or a group of people must challenge it. The school board must approve the banning. Some communities require a committee review before it can be banned.
To enforce the banning libraries and bookstores will not have the books available for people to check out. For a book to be banned it must first be challenged, but not all challenged books get banned. For example, the book 1984 was banned in the Soviet Union for being against communism and was burned. However, in Jackson County,
If one parent censors a book, because they do not want their child to read it, every kid looses the opportunity to read it. Some parents want to censor too much for their kids. What these parents do not realize is that it makes the child un prepared. If you give someone rose colored glasses to shield them from all the red flags of the world, all the red flags just end up looking like flags. Censorship hurts a child. The American Association of School Administrators states “Censorship is defined as the removal, suppression, or restricted circulation of literary, artistic, or educational material”. Since when does that sound like a good decision. Censorship can only further destroy our fragile society.
In this time of political correctness, all librarians and educators must have a clear and concise understanding of the meaning of both censorship and selection. No one wants to ban or restrict a student from learning through quality literature, but who is to say that a book is of high quality or if it age appropriate for most students. By knowing how each of the process work, passing non bias judgement may be achieved and students will be able to benefit from both censorship and selection.
Book banning is an issue that is seen as archaic in today’s society. Between New Zealand’s right to the freedom of the media, and a generally liberal government, the idea of banning a book due to its content is unheard of. So, it is understandable that there was a massive uproar when conservative lobby group Family First managed to get the first book banned in New Zealand in 22 years in an attempt to “promote a culture that values the family” . In relation to this, recent statistics performed by the American Library Association show that the vast majority of those who challenge books are parents . We can infer from these statistics that this is most likely to “protect” their children from the harsh realities of the world today. As many of
In the 21st century, many books and pieces of literature are still being banned and censored on a regular basis. Many people argue whether the government has the right to restrict the materials available to young people in libraries. Censorship is the practice of revising books, moveis, tv shows, etc, and removing inappropriate material. Books with mature content are found in every library across the United States. The mis-perceptions of “innapropriate” books are It would be tough to name a book that doesn’t at least offend one person out there in the world. The government should not have the right to restrict the materials available to young people in libraries because: the first amendment clearly opinion, kids are going to do it anyways,
Since 1990, the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) has recorded more than 10,000 book challenges, including 513 in 2008. A challenge is a formal, written complaint requesting a book be removed from library shelves or school curriculum. About three out of four of all challenges are to material in schools or school libraries, and one in four are to material in public libraries. OIF estimates that less than one-quarter of challenges are reported and
It has been said that the books that we ban are the books that we learn the most from. But most people don’t even know what a banned/challenged book is or means. A banned book is a book that a country/state government is trying to take the book off of all shelves in that state/country. A challenged book is a book that is trying to get banned on a small scale. Like a city or town. But people don’t just have problems with one of these books for no reason. Books are usually banned/challenged for 3 main reasons material was considered to sexually explicit, material was considered to contain offensive language, and material is considered not appropriate for any age group.( “About Banned & Challenged Books” American Library Association’s office(1996) Web. 26 Apr.2016) An example of a challenged book is Cut by Patricia McCormick witch is about a young woman that has a addiction to cut herself in
