Although censorship is still practised in some countries today, almost anyone would agree that censorship is never the right answer; as we have seen in the past, it has seldomly ever works out. There are various reasons as to why censorship is used. They include: security purposes, prevent hate speech, to protect vulnerable communities and also to counter unethical religious and political views. Censorship is currently being used for both political and social purposes. Most of these reasons for censorship are not absolute because they hinder people’s freedom of expression and speech. This confirms my argument that censorship is bad in the modern world. Despite some aspects considering censorship to be good, there are several aspects that promote my argument that censorship is bad thus its advantageous nature.

Although it is okay to censor things that could potentially harm a certain group of people or person, there is a line that shouldn’t be crossed. Censoring certain video games and music interferes with the power of free speech and can be argued as unconstitutional. Censorship is censoring anything that may display any profane, graphic, or obscene content such as nudity, and graphic hate, speech, or symbol. It is a topic that has many different pros and cons as well as many arguments as to if it should be allowed or not and if it is interfering with the First Amendment of protecting freedom of speech, religion, assembly, press, and petitio. In order for a work to become censored, some authority figure imposes restrictions that establish what would be and would not be allowed to be put in front of the public for people to read. The standards those in authority base their restrictions off of are the standards set by the publishers, producers, and agencies of that work. Censorship is something that affects many people especially in the school system; it normally causes tensions to rise. This is because someone feels that their First Amendment rights have been violated. This most frequently happens in the school system because parents, students, teachers, and or staff find a work offensive in some way and try to get it removed. They bring it to the school board, and if severe enough, the case is brought before a judge in court. In most cases the person or group that tries to get the work censored, loses the case. In some cases, the person trying to censor does win. According to most school boards, they would say that students have their full First Amendment rights, but that is not always the case. When it comes to the Freedom of Expression, most schools find some way to censor, books, and articles especially.

Imagine if a society controlled what people see, hear, or did. This type of censorship is harmful to a society. Everyone needs to understand each other’s freedoms. This issue is discussed in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In this society, they can not read certain things and people decide to commit suicide over it. Censorship takes away our rights as individuals. It violates the First Amendment, keeps people from learning, and gives the government total control.

In school libraries, the idea of censorship has always been considered. Those who choose to declare a censorship on books are appeasing the idea that we should not put ourselves in the position to read a book that may be seen as inappropriate. This is understandable, as some authors may include extremely dark and questionable things in their writings. But I also believe that we have complete choice in what we should read and what we should put upon ourselves in general. Censorships in the library takes away the opportunities we are given when we wish to read a book that can help us get away from our problems and create a whole new world for ourselves.

Censorship, the restriction of literature, news, art, etc. that’s seen as inappropriate by those in charge. America prides itself on being a land of freedom, but how is that possible when so many things are still be censored to this day. This is especially common in schools. Popular books which have one or two crude scenes or even words constantly get banned from libraries in high schools and elementary schools. A person should make the decision whether or not to experience the censored material. Censorship on important information and literature does more harm than good.
