Cesar Chavez was more towards farmworkers while Martin King Jr. was more towards the Civil Rights movement. Chavez was the person that organized farmworkers and fought to obtain better working conditions in the fields of California. His accomplishments changed the lives of millions of people. Fifty years later, and his influence is still felt today.
Cesario Estrada Chavez was the second of five children. Cesar’s parents owned a small farm and ran a country store. As the great depression, the deepest and longest-lasting economic turn down or crisis in the history of the United States, got worse and had a drought for years that forced thousands of people to move off the land, the Chavez family moved to California. At the end of one of his fasts, presidential candidate, Robert Kennedy came to Delano to eat with him. Cesar put his organization behind Kennedy’s candidacy; consequently, Kennedy win the California voting. Tragically, Kennedy was assassinated in LA shortly after his visit. Additionally, Cesar looked for a political solution to the deadlock. In 1975, he supported Jerry Brown’s bid to becoming governor of California, and believe it or not, he is still governor of California! In return, Jerry Brown was able to come up with the nation’s first law giving farm workers the freedom to vote in elections. Later on in his life, his Cesar’s goals and visions were changing. He began to focus more on the dangers of pesticides, which have always been a pest to farmworkers because they are the main reason of illness to farmworkers. He also focused more on building low-cost housing for farmworkers and he also started a drug rehabilitation program. These things, as you can tell, were more focused on helping
