The Watsons Go To Birmingham - 1963
Have you ever gone through a change either mentally or physically? In The Watsons Go To Birmingham -1963, there is an enormous amount of change both mentally and physically, especially between Byron and Kenny, who are two brothers in the weird Watsons family. Even though all the weird Watsons changed throughout the book, Byron changed the most both mentally and physically.
To begin with the extravagant list of changes let's first mention his physical changes . Byron went through physical changes when he got so attracted to himself that he kissed the car mirror and froze to it therefore started to cry. The book states that “ You could cut Byron's head off and he probably wouldn't cry .” As you can see, he went through a

His changes seem to begin after he gets in trouble (which happened a lot) being the “god of the school” and an official juvenile delinquent . One example of a mental change was when Byron used a match to ignite a fire. That was the last straw. As a result of this incident his family took him to his Grandma Sands until he started to behave. However, the fight was over before it even started. Byron instantly begain to behave and his family stayed with him . He started acting well mannered saying “please , thank you , no thank you,” and tuned into people’s conversations and acted engrossed. You can start to see Byron change when he did not follow Kenny to the part of the lake where they were not trespass to go. Finally, when Joey's church got bombed, you can see a complete character change in Byron by the way he responded with worry and sorrow about his sister who luckily was not there. then Instead of picking on Kenny when he got upset about what happened in Birmingham, Byron stuck with him and comforted him. This was a colossal change from the beginning of the book when he would have just left his little brother to
There are so many ways and reasons that people can change. You can change for love, passion, or to fit in. There are many more things that can change a person. I’m taking two stories and looking if the characters changed or stayed the same.
Byron changes in the book. Byron is not a nice guy in the beginning throughout the book he starts to change like for example, Bryon felt bad for killing the bird so he made a grave and a small funeral for the bird. When they go to Alabama, Byron has changed he started treating people nicer. He wanted to watch cartoons with Kenny and lastly, Byron felt worried about Joetta because a bomb hit the church so he thought that Joetta
The only distinct change that he goes through is a change from being alive to being dead. He does not know he has changed. I believe that this is a form of dramatic irony. The feeling of being scared to die is Lavender's antagonist.
Scott changed the most because he went from being really shy at the beginning and then he got tougher and stopped the people that were bullying him. During the year this other kid named Vernon was bullying him since Scott got to the high school.
“When we are no longer able to change a situation - we are challenged to change ourself,”--Viktor E. Frankl (www.brainyquote.com). In the novel The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis, Byron (“By”) Watson changes the most. At the beginning of the novel, Byron does not seem to care about his siblings, but throughout the story he becomes more protective of his younger siblings, Joetta and Kenny. He used to be very rude, but now he is being very respectful towards his family and friends.
But the character that changed the most is Byron. In the beginning of the book Byron was a very mean boy. Byron gradually changed throughout the book. Byron changed the most because he became more responsible and nicer. Kenny, on the other hand, stayed the same throughout the whole book.
Nick, the narrator throughout the book, experiences changes but not as many as other characters. Nick was a shy
“Your so diffrent.Grown.No.I’m the same it is everything else that has changed she she shook her head.no.you’ve changed”(paulsen 149).In the historical fiction woods runner by gary paulsen. it shows lots of change over time physically and mentally. In the story woods runner samuel’s parents are taking and he is determined to find them.On his journey he meets many people who help him.he also learns many different things that help him on his way to his family.
The topic of Civil Rights is an interesting topic for so many people. This event changed history forever and allowed some people who couldn’t even get good jobs to become president of the United States or even have the same rights as others. In the book The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963, the author, Christopher Paul Curtis, wrote a story about a family that is living in this time. The author mostly focused on telling us a story of the Watson family and not really any historical events. I really would've liked it if the book gave more information on civil rights and not just have one historical event happen at the end of the book. Adding some more facts and history would have made the book more interesting. All in all, the book The Watsons Go
In the fictional novel, The Watsons Go To Birmingham there were several historically accurate cultures and events from the 1960’s. Most of the story is based on the mother wanting to go to Alabama, because that’s where her family is. However her husband doesn’t think it is a good idea because he knows there is segregation down in the south, and he doesn’t want his kids to see all the hatred for people of a different skin color. Their children have not been exposed the separation of different skin colors because they live in Flint, Michigan, where there is not a lot of conflicts about segregation. Yet, at some point the family decides to make the long trip to Birmingham. Before they leave for their trip, their dad goes and buys a record player
Sometimes there are experiences that can completely change a person. A person comes in one way and comes out completely different, usually in their head. This happens a lot, even way back to the early 1600’s in the tragedy-based play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, where Macbeth develops and changes as a character over the course of the play in terms of his mentality. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is motivated by the witches predictions, can not control his thoughts, and lets his emotions get in the way of what he wants. Towards the end of the play, Macbeth is motivated by his need to survive, can control his thoughts better and limits the effect emotions have on him. These are three key components that change
Change can be seen as a form of transformation or conversion. A form of change can be seen in “Victory Lap” by George Saunders, a short story written in such a way that the events that are enrolling throughout the story are being processed and told through the minds of three main characters. Having the perspective of each character allows us, the readers to get a much greater understanding about them and to make a better character analysis. Having said that, this story is simply about a girl, Alison getting kidnapped by an unnamed kidnapper. What were really captivating were the changes spotted on characters as the conflict progresses. One character in particular is very intriguing and his name is Kyle. One of our main character, Alison
How many changes can one boy go through when growing up? Growing up can be very complicated because parents demand more of older children. These increased expectations are often met by resistance which leads to rebelliousness. Byron Watson, a boy who lives in the time of segregation, is greatly influenced by adults expecting more of him. In the novel The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis, Curtis presents the story of a young teenager who struggles in facing the reality that surrounds him. Byron changes his ways to become a caring and responsible boy, even though transitioning can be hard for a boy who is about to become a teenager. Byron changes from uncaring to caring by being more protective. He transforms from obnoxious to respectful by listening to the elders. Lastly, he changes from delinquent to well behaved by not taking chances with Momma and learning his lesson the first time his mom tells him. While Kenny is jawing to Byron, he didn’t know Byron would save his life.
As I watch my family pack up, I don't believe, this is my home, I couldn’t believe it. In the Watsons go to Birmingham, Byron, a kid from the novel, with a big ego. This boy Byron felt the unbelief of the upcoming chapter of his life. Byron caused this because he secretly played with fire, stole from a store and was the school bully, this proves Byron’s disobedience. All this got him nowhere (except Alabama). In the novel The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis, Byron's disobedience brought his parents to the decision of moving Byron to Birmingham, Alabama.
Kenny does not treat people better than Byron. Kenny is as big as a bully as Byron is. He has had multiple moments of rudeness. For example, Kenny hit Larry Dunn twice, Kenny laughed at Cody and Rufus when Larry made a rude joke to them, and when Byron got stuck to the mirror, Kenny had a wonderful time making fun of him.
