Steroids in Baseball
In A Streetcar Named Desire there is a character named Blanche who has lost her family fortune and estate, and her husband has committed suicide. Blanche decides to move into the Kowalski home with her sister and brother-in-law. Blanche is a very insecure women who pretends to be someone she is not around her sister. This is how a lot of professional baseball players act when they are using steroids. They do not want people to find out about it so they act very different when they are in a group setting, and also they will lie to anyone even loved ones about whether or not they are using the steroids because if anyone was to find out there career would be ruined. Steroids are

In 2009-2010 Anthony Bosch listed as a doctor and VP of Medical Hrt Inc. in corporate filings in Florida, then in March 2012 Biogenesis of America is first registered with the Florida Secretary of State. Bosch listed his occupation as “biochemist” in a report filed by the police after he was cited for an expired tag and suspended license. In July of 2012 Bosch traveled to Kansas City for the MLB All Star Game where client Melky Cabrera was awarded MVP honors, In records Bosch had said that he went there because he “needed to collect $17,000”. In August of that year Melky Cabrera was suspended 50 games for elevated levels of testosterone. His name also appeared in Biogenesis records. Bartolo Colon was suspended 50 games after tests had also revealed he had high levels of testosterone in August 2012, his name also appeared in the biogenesis records. In November of 2012, Yasmani Grandal had also been suspended for the exact same reason. In January of 2013 Biogenesis of America closed. On January 29th the Miami New Times was the first to report on records about the Biogenesis scandal. Outside the Lines is a sports television show on ESPN that examines critical issues on and off the field of American sports. Once the Miami New Times had reported about Biogenesis, Outside the Lines jumped on the bandwagon and started to also investigate. In August of 2013, …show more content…
Some short-term effects would be paranoid jealousy, extreme irritability, delusions, impaired judgment, and extreme mood swings can also occur, which is including “roid rage” which is angry feelings and behavior that often times lead to violence. There are many long-term effects from anabolic steroids including kidney problems or failure, liver damage, enlarged heart, high blood pressure, and changes in blood cholesterol, all of which increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. There is also some gender-specific effects. In men you may have shrinking testicles, decreased sperm count, baldness, development of breasts, and increased risk for prostate cancer. In women you can get growth of facial hair or excess body hair, male-pattern baldness, changes in or stop in the menstrual cycle, enlarged clitoris, depended voice. Lastly, in teens you may experience stunted growth (when high hormone levels from steroids signal to the body to stop bone growth too early), or stunted height (if teens use steroids before their growth spurt). Lastly, people who abuse anabolic steroids may experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop using the steroids including mood swings, fatigue, restlessness, loss of appetite, sleep problems, decreased sex drive, and steroid
Steroids are a hot topic of debate and controversy in the world of athletes and sports. Steroids fall under the umbrella of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) and are a dark cloud that have been hovering over the sports world for a long time. In the world today, steroids are the most relevant in major league baseball. Many baseball players, such as Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Ryan Braun, and Mark McGwire, just to name a few, have ruined their reputations because of steroids. There are repercussions for PED use in major league baseball, which have cut down on the substance abuse by players but have nowhere near eliminated the problem.
But some teens use these drugs too. In 2002 people asked teens if they tried steroids at least once, and 2.5% of 8th graders said they had tried them, 3.5% of 10th graders admitted they had tried them, and 4% of 12th graders tried them (Anabolic). Thankfully, most of them are smart and stayed away from them. Some famous athletes have admitted to steroid use. The list includes Clemens, Ryan Braun, Tyson Gay, Alex Rodriguez, and more (Men's Journal). More importantly, most of these athletes have been kicked out of their major league sport because of their steroid
Steroids are used for sports, or any sort of body building. Athletes use steroids because they believe it gives them a more competitive edge on other athletes. They do not fear the consequences of what could happen to their body. Athletes only think of the upside to what they are getting. Some examples of athletes that have used steroids are Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, and Lance Armstrong, to name a few. Many people speculated Barry Bonds taking PED’s, but when he was tested ,there was nothing found. Then the idea of undetectable steroids came up. “When told that he has never failed a steroid test, as others have failed, they argue that some steroids are undetectable.”( Coleman,18). Steroids may have lifted Barry’s career, but there will always be a dent in his
In Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire, Williams explores the internal conflict of illusion versus reality through the characters. Humans often use illusion to save us pain and it allows us to enjoy pleasure instead. However, as illusion clashes with reality, one can forget the difference between the two. When people are caught up in their illusions, eventually they must face reality even if it is harsh. In the play, Blanche suffers from the struggle of what is real and what is fake because of the difficult events of her past. Blanche comes to her sister Stella seeking aid because she has lost her home, her job, and her family. To deal with this terrible part of her life, she uses fantasy to escape her dreadful reality. Blanche’s embracement of a fantasy world can be categorized by her attempts to revive her youth, her relationship struggles, and attempts to escape her past.
In the classic fairytale of Cinderella, the main character is trapped in an abusive household. However, Cinderella’s self-perception of optimism and hope, enables her to believe that ultimately, her life will naturally improve with these attributes. True to her convictions, Cinderella gets her happily ever after by going to the ball where the prince falls in love with her. Cinderella is saved from her evil. On the other hand, Cinderella can be viewed as a victim who does nothing to enable herself to escape her abusive reality, insteads helplessly waits for fate to intervene. She does not confront the situation nor independently strive to improve her circumstances. Correspondingly, how individuals act when faced with conflict is strongly influenced by their self-perception. It is possible to become confused between reality and illusion, which is determined by their level of self-awareness. In Tennessee Williams’ play, A Streetcar Named Desire, the character of Stella struggles between the control of her husband and sister. Throughout the play, this conflict is demonstrated as she struggles with becoming aware of her abusive household and the contrast to the fairytale illusion she desperately clings to. Ultimately, Stella’s choice to maintain her illusion, rather than confronting her reality, is due to the self-perception of her need to depend on others and desire for idealism, which overall controls her fate.
In Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche DuBois is thrust into a series of unfortunate events and undergoes drastic changes in an effort to come to terms with her completely changed life. Through these events, Blanche happens to be the only remaining individual left to take care of the once valuable and prestigious family belongings, and her psychological mind spirals out of control in her attempts to restore the family’s honor. In addition to experiencing loneliness and feeling isolation from humans, Blanche faced many new challenges in stressful situations, which contributed to her poor decision making skills and inevitable negative outcomes in most of those situations. Through the characterization of Blanche DuBois, Williams’ intends to display the power of significant experiences in one’s life, which serves as a warning of how the effects of significant experiences on individuals should not be underestimated. Unfortunately, in Blanche’s case, abandonment by her sister was the perfect example of an individual underestimating the result of their actions, as this action was the initiation point of the events that would eventually lead to her unfortunate fate. Specifically, Williams’ focuses on portraying the disastrous effects of human isolation, which is often the result of an individual’s mindless actions. Human isolation plays an important role in the outcome of the play, as Blanche is known to have been abandoned at a young age, and her
The author, Tennessee Williams, does a phenomenal job of portraying Blanche Dubois as a deceiving, manipulative, arrogant person in his book “A Streetcar named Desire”. Williams first showcases these characteristics during the arrival of Blanche. This introduction not only sets a mood and tone but it gives us our first impression of Blanche. Overall this impression leaves the audience with a sour taste in their mouths and ill feelings towards the new girl. However, don’t be so quick to jump the gun. What if I said Blanche isn’t the villain she’s depicted as in this story?
The play A Streetcar Named Desire, was remade into a movie that was filmed in New Orleans. The film takes place in the 1950s with Blanche who moves in with her sister, Stella, and her brother in law, Stanley. The movie is about Blanche’s experience and eventually demise all in New Orleans.
“Why Baseball Still Needs Steroids: A Sociological Perspective.” The Huffington Post, 5 Aug. 2013, www.huffingtonpost.com/jill-weinberg/why-baseball-still-needs-_b_3707800.html. Accessed 18 Jan. 2017. The article is about the positive effects that steroids bring on the game of baseball. Steroids bring excitement to the game when people are performing as if they are a Phenom. The motivation of young players today has gone down due to the fact that if they underperform they are basically get cut. I can use this to show that their is always a positive side to something even if in some people’s eyes it's not good. I can also use it to show how different the game is when steroids are used compared to when they aren’t how much excitement comes with steroid
A Streetcar Named Desire written by Tennessee 0portray a play center and revolving around characters and New Orleans. The two settings are completely different we are introduced to Elysian Field where the Kowalski live and then Blanche from Belle Reve a high class society. Stella has written to Blanche “She wasn’t expecting to find us in such a small place. You see I’d tried to gloss things over a little in my letters” (31). Blanche meanwhile travelled to stay with the Kowalski on two streetcars which will ultimately determine her faith she longs for desire but could not bear the sign of death.
Growing up, I looked up to guys like Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, and Barry Bonds. They were some of the best players to ever play the game. In the recent years, it was revealed that these players were taking anabolic steroids throughout their career. I always thought with hard work and dedication, I could be just like them, but that was not possible because they were all cheating to get an edge. Anabolic steroids were added to the list of Class III Substances in the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 1990. This act makes it illegal to possess anabolic steroids in the United States without a prescription. Congress passed this in hope to avoid the use of anabolic steroids in sports. However, the majority of steroid users are in fact
The great steroid debate has been a widely discussed issue in baseball, questioning the ethics of the game and the validity of great baseball players. Steroids have presented a significant issue in Major League Baseball (MLB) especially when all-time great players who have been accused of using steroids are eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is considered by most baseball fans to be a sacred place in baseball where only the best of the best are honored. The idea of inducting a steroid user into the Hall of Fame is considered a mockery by some, as “cheaters” do not belong with the “purest of the pure” baseball players no matter the statistics they put up while playing. So when the names of these “cheaters” show up
The issue of steroid use in professional baseball is a serious problem. Steroids were used by some players to improve their performance. This is an unfair advantage for them against other players that did not use these drugs. Even if their performance got better and improved their career, these drugs can cause bad effects on your health. Since it is not legal to use steroids, a lot of players that used them did it secretly. Since these players had regular seasons and careers, but then changed in their performance and how they looked, people became suspicious.
Baseball was meant to be a sport for people to play and to have fun while doing it. It was like that for a while until drugs such as steroids started becoming more accessible.
Professional sports are a competition between the greatest athletes in the world. And when I go to a game, that’s exactly what I expect to see. Sports are entertainment. There is no room for purity and respecting the limits that athletes had in the past. Modern athletes should utilize all the resources that they have available to them. This includes steroids, which enhance an athlete’s performance. After all, performance is what really matters.
