Character Analysis Of Atticus In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee

Have you ever been blamed for something you didn't do? In Harper Lee’s To kill A Mockingbird, Atticus is defending a black man because he knows he's innocent and he knows if that was him he would hope he had someone take his side when they know he was innocent. Atticus should take a stand for Tom Robinson because he believes for standing up for the right thing and he also helps others in need.

"First of all … if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view- until you climb in their skin and walk around in it (page 39)" This quote from a conversation between Atticus and Scout shows how he believes in the idea of widening your perspective, and being able to show others what it's like to see things in a new light. Atticus is a father of two, so it's very important for him to give his children lessons that they will be able to keep with them for their entire lives. Atticus has many great attributes but sometimes he can be over confident and he is also very ignorant, making him not necessarily always right and making him assume things rather than thinking about what is actually right. How he assumed and underestimated Bob Ewell’s vicious actions is an example of his ignorance. Atticus is a very confident person but his confidence can lead to him not seeing different situations properly because he thinks he knows what is going to happen or in this case he thinks he knows Bob Ewell very well. “I know how that kind are about paying off grudges, but I don’t understand why he should harbor one—he had his way in court, didn’t he?”

This shows Atticus has incredible knowledge about life and some of the struggles that may happen throughout your life. Some have more courage than others do. In the book To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, Atticus, a father of two and lawyer, stands up for a colored man in a court of law. At first, the readers just see him as a studious, quiet father, who has unique parenting strategies, but as the book progresses, Atticus's character grows. His courage, honesty, boldness, and scruples shape his life. In the trial with Tom Robinson, this shows especially. His determination to create the best case he can even though the odds are stacked against him, show the perseverance and strength of mind he has. In the story Atticus and Calpurnia try to teach Scout the skill of empathy because Scout has a reputation of fighting with people who she does not agree with or she finds annoying. One example of this is when Atticus says “You never really understand a person until you crawl in their skin and walked around”. This was an important quote because you need to visualize what the other person feels or what they are going though before you just jump to conclusions. In the story Scout is having a hard time with her teacher which she feels is treating her far worse than the other kids. When she tells this to Atticus he tells her she have a reason for this and you can not just jump to conclusions and assume that she is out to get you. Which is true because most times peoples have reasons for doing certain things and you can’t just assume that they are a bad person. Another quote about empathy was when Calpurnia said “That boy is your company and if he wants to eat up on the table cloth let him”. In this part of the story Atticus that's in Walter’s son in to eat. However when he does not put his table cloth in his lap Scout gets angry and tells him to put the tablecloth on his lap. However Walter’s family is poor and they are probably not used to eating this way. In the novel Atticus plays a major role as a father, lawyer, and neighbor in Maycomb, Alabama. Over the course of the story, Atticus uses these characteristics to demonstrate the person he really is. Through his actions he impacts many others lives while fighting for his reputation. Atticus is shown to be a responsible, tolerant, and courageous man.

Throughout Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, it seems as if Atticus Finch is a failure as both a parent and a lawyer. However, somebody with a good understanding of the novel will realise that Atticus is in fact a terrific lawyer and a superb father. However, like all people, Atticus has his flaws.

One of the most interesting characters in To Kill a Mockingbird is Atticus Finch. He is a good representation of someone that is strong while keeping in mind other’s feelings. Throughout the book Atticus is show as a kind man who really cares for the people of Maycomb County. However, he still demands justice when someone is treated unfairly, even for the likes of a black man. Atticus Finch is very influential and yet still listens to what needs to be heard. In “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Harper Lee portrays Atticus as a man who values justice, wiseness and fair-mindedness.

Philosopher Albert Schweitzer explains, “The purpose of human life is to serve, and show compassion and the will to help others”(BrainyQoute.com) In order to follow the purpose of life you have to teach the purpose of life. Compassion is meant to be shared and spread throughout the whole world. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Atticus takes this moral upon himself, and teaches Jem and Scout about compassion in Maycomb. Throughout the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee deeply develops her theme that compassion is understanding someone else’s perspective and following your own belief even if it contradicts the way of society.

To begin, the Cunningham family occupies a critical role in showing kindness throughout the story. While the family may not show compassion to others in the early scenes of the book, the behaviors of others influence them. Near the start of the story, Jem and Scout invite Walter over to the Finch home for dinner, during which Scout begins to taunt Walter for pouring syrup all over his food. When Calpurnia sees this, she pulls Scout aside and gives her a lecture that reads, “Hush your mouth! Don’t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house’s yo’ comp’ny, and don’t you let me catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was so high and mighty!” (29).
