Mr. Atticus Finch does not wear the mask of a good father and a good citizen; he embodies it. Harper Lee is a famous author whose most famous world is the novel, “To kill a Mockingbird”. Within this novel we are shown many different colours depicted by many unique and interesting characters. Among the many adults in the novel, Mr. Finch Finch wins the medal of best role model. He does not only model honourable characteristics to his two children, Jem and Scout, but also to their community of Maycomb. Being a single parent raising two children is not a job for just anyone. Maycomb county's citizen, Mr. Atticus Finch, does exactly that. Aside from providing help for his community through his work as a lawyer, he has been a good citizen of his community in other ways. He is always kind to his neighbours, no matter what they say to him or his children. He also displays this characteristic when he treats the coloured members of his community just as well as the others. This is dominantly seen throughout the book as Mr. Finch works on the case regarding a coloured man named Tom. Even when his own nephew says to his daughter, “I guess it a’t your fault it Uncle Atticus is a niger-lover bsiders, but i’m here to tell you it certainly does mortify the rest of the family--”, Mr. Finch's sense of righteousness does not waver. However, aside from the case we are also shown how he treats Calpurnia with respect. Calpurnia works at their house as a housekeeper and also as a parental figure in both of Mr. Finch’s children's lives. He continues to treat her as he could any other member of their community; kindly. He does not differentiate her due to her skin colour. By doing this, he not only teaches his children a valuable lesson, but also displays a positive characteristic many people of that time did not
After Scout confronts Atticus about “defending negros”, Atticus replies on how this decision is for his own dignity: “‘For a number of reasons’, said Atticus. ‘The main one is, if I didn’t, I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.’” (123; ch.9). Out of the lots of prejudice in Maycomb County, Atticus is one that looks passed race and gender. He holds equal respect for those who abide by the laws of being human. Not much of population consist of people like Atticus, who is not just fighting for Tom for the sake of the town, but for his own virtue. It takes a lot of integrity to stand up for what is right during that time and that is exactly what Atticus is making an effort to do.
Atticus Finch is widely regarded as one of the most influential characters in modern literature. His pivotal role in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee exemplifies this influence and demonstrates his positive effect on his children, Jem and Scout. Throughout the novel, Atticus leads by example and provides lessons and teachings for his children to follow. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee presents Atticus Finch as a principled lawyer, committed but single father to Scout and Jem, and a law-abiding citizen. Atticus is a respectable gentleman in society and a role model for his children. Throughout the book we see evidence of his honorable intentions, though he doesn’t seem to reap the rewards. He is morally upstanding, even-keeled, and daring. Because of these things, Atticus is a man who deserves great respect and admiration.
True role models are those who possess the qualities that we would want to have in the near future and those who interest us in a way that make us want to be a better person. They teach us more about ourselves and encourage us to make better choices. A role model is not just someone who is successful, but someone who has had similar experiences that we have had. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates that Atticus Finch is a true role model. Over the course of the novel, Atticus stands up for his beliefs, respects everyone despite who they are and behaves as a true father. Atticus is truly the ideal role model.
Atticus Finch to many readers can be considered as a righteous and selfless person. As a just lawyer, he only fights for justice and chooses to do the things that are proper in God’s eye and law-abiding. In the novel, Atticus Finch had done the things that other whites wouldn’t do, which is to become a defense lawyer for a black man. In a racial society, it can be
Atticus Finch is a model father created by Harper Lee in the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird. He is an important figure in the Maycomb, Alabama Community. He raises his children, Jean Louise Finch (Scout) and Jeremy Atticus Finch (Jem) with wide sets of morals, disciplines them, and is a true role model. Atticus allows his children to be individuals and does not try to change who they are. He teaches them fairness and equality among many different types of people in Maycomb. He is always teaching his children about how their actions may affect others, then, as a result, devices punishments to teach Scout and Jem valued life lessons. In many situations, Atticus can chastise his children, but he allows them mature and notice their own mistakes
Children need an influential role model in their life in order to be successful and to live a fortunate life. Atticus Finch, one of the important characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, is portrayed as a lawyer and a single parent striving to raise his children to see the good in people within Maycomb’s racist community. Atticus says that people never really understand someone until they put themselves in that person's shoes and see things their way. If people do the same to see things in Atticus’ view or almost any parent perspective, they would see a strong desire to raise his/her child the right way. Jem and Scout Finch, who are both Atticus’ children learn many moral lessons from Atticus because he encounters some adverse situations himself. In other words, Atticus determines to teach Jem and Scout the righteous aspects of life.
In reality, heroes do not always appear at the perfect time, but when one does, it is at the most opportune moment to move society forward. Atticus Finch is the hero in Maycomb. Despite the common prejudice against African Americans, Atticus defied society’s standards and treated African Americans as equals. Instead of capitulating, Atticus defended Tom Robinson, a coloured man, with all his might. Atticus Finch’s heroic qualities in To Kill a Mockingbird are shown through his patient mentoring of Jem and Scout, ravenous appetite for social justice. and unconditional support for all humans.
Rather Atticus is the ethical pillar of Maycomb County, which the citizens are, “perfectly willing to let him do what they’re too afraid to do themselves.” (Lee, 316). To champion change toward racial acceptance and equality. His dedication to the field of justice, eagerness to change societal perceptions and his efforts to change the “order of things” is his contribution to the world. Like a mockingbird he contributes all his power to help, Atticus works his “heart out” which “tears him to pieces.”(Lee, 316). Atticus’ eloquent defences and statements are a direct allegory to the mockingbird’s song which is meant to comfort and bring about positivity. It is in this sense that Atticus Finch can be considered the most prominent mockingbird of this postbellum novel, due to his never ending desire to help the helpless and to effect change in the world for the purpose of spreading equality. And that is the reason why all who opposed him ultimately relented, one example being the Cunninghams at the jailhouse who after realizing their “shameful” mistake departed without another word.
In Maycomb, Alabama in the 60’s it can be hard to be a good parent. Especially when one is a widowed, full-time working man raising two young children. These characteristics describe the great man, Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch is a widowed father raising his kids all while living in a town full of racism and hate. Atticus is a respectful lawyer that faces adversities of all kinds but still finds a way to be a good father. Even though Atticus Finch sometimes puts his kids in dangerous situations, he is a great father to his kids because he teaches them real life lessons, he is an honest man, and he respects and treats all people with fairness.
Mockingbirds are known to be a symbol of innocence. Through day and night, they sing, mimicking other creatures sounds. Their peaceful nature brings no harm to human life. Therefore, killing a mockingbird is like destroying purity and constructing a sin.
In the historical fiction novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee portrays her ideas of social justice and visions of a world without prejudice through the main protagonist Atticus Finch. As a result of his impeccable intelligence, wisdom, and ahead-of-his-time political views, Atticus is respected by the majority of Maycomb. He is the willful and moral resolution to the people of Maycomb, as well as the person others turn to in times of hardship. But the moral sense he has that makes him so admirable conclusively results in his falling out with Maycomb's citizens. Incapable of enduring the town’s regular imbedded racial prejudice, he agrees to defend Tom Robinson. This act makes him the object of ridicule in Maycomb. His response to the
There are few people in this world who can have a greater impact with only a few words compared to another’s hundred. These people are literate, and always know when to speak, and what to say. Atticus Finch is the best example of one of these people. His words have such gravity and because of that he is very well respected. What Bob Ewell says in 200 rambling words is what Atticus can say in one. Yet people like Atticus have a certain demeanor and importance that sets them apart from the rest: it makes them the most powerful people in the world.
In recent literary history, perhaps the strongest contender for the one character that has had the greatest influence on a generation is Atticus Finch, father of the protagonist in “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Both as a father, and a lawyer, he has served, and still today serves as a pillar of righteousness and morality. The ability for his morality to translate to all people, across ages, races, and cultures, is a feat preformed by Harper Lee in her masterpiece, “To Kill A Mockingbird”. She establishes Atticus Finch as the moral center of the novel by juxtaposing his actions and the relationships with those of the majority of Maycomb. In doing so, she has made him a cultural, and oftentimes personal icon.
Choosing to write my poem about Atticus Finch and his views on the world at that time was not a hard decision based on how courageous he was in the novel. Even today, African-Americans are not being whipped and described as “negroes” like they were during 1619-1865 yet, there is still discrimination going on. Atticus Finch a lawyer is appointed to Tom Robinson and as he's defending him he's called a “nigger-lover” and frowned upon by all the ignorant people in the town. When he was first appointed to Tom, everyone thought because Atticus is a white man he’d automatically be on Mayella Ewell (the supposed victim’s) side. Atticus has morals and knows not attempting to clear Tom Robinson’s name would do his conscience no good. Although he knew
