Senior Airman Tyler Cross has my highest recommendation for acceptance into the United States Air Force Academy. As a Master Sergeant with 15 years in the United States Air Force and a vested interest in the future of our military, it is with the utmost care and sincerity that I recommend prospective leaders. Senior Airman Cross’ character and personnel records exceed my standard for the level of performance and behavior that I expect from our best young Airmen. As Senior Airmen’s trainer, I have spent a great deal of time with him and can honestly say that he is positive, earnest, and professional at all times. He is an upright Airman of high character, as evidenced by his total devotion to duty and his efforts to further his education, training,
strives for excellence and individual glory by doing heroic deeds. He has an admirable set of
Lieutenant Carroll is dead! The Fallen Angels character, Lieutenant Carroll, is one of the most important people within the story and Perry’s life. Carroll shows that he is sympathetic when the reality of war hits the soldiers. He is able to be caring, even to those who are the same ethnicity of the men who are trying to kill him. Lastly, he proves that there are certain instances where the men will have to be brave.
He was always trying to better himself and he would always try to do the right thing. He did all his MCI's, went to the gym every day, and was always polite. When it came to doing the right thing, you could always count on him. He would always pick up trash (even if it wasnt his). If he was working and saw something that needed to be done, he would do it. If he saw another Marine slacking off or being a turd, he would correct that Marine. He was the ultimate rolemodle for junior Marines.
In the story “Saboteur” by Ha Jin there are multiple ironic events that happen throughout the story. The name of the story is ironic because the word Saboteur is used for one who intentionally obstructs something. In the beginning of the story, Mr. Chiu who is a communist is arrested for confronting a police officer who purposefully throws a bowl of tea on him and his wife's sandals; it is then that he becomes a saboteur to the public. “... You’re a saboteur, you know that? You’re disrupting public order” (Jin 309). While in jail Mr. Chiu realizes that his Hepatitis is relapsing but when he tries to tell the authorities (who are supposed to help and protect us) they tell him that they cannot do anything for him so he has to sit until Monday. “No leader is on duty on the weekend. You have to wait till Monday” (Jin 312). After Mr. Chiu is released, he visits food stands and ends up contaminating innocent people with Hepatitis as revenge for what they put him through. “Within a month over eight hundred people contracted acute hepatitis in Muji. Six die of the disease” (Jin 316).
Jimmy Cross is the First Lieutenant who carries “the responsibility for the lives of his men” (O’Brien 429). Cross let his imagined love get in the way of his responsibilities and one of his men was killed. Cross carries the weight of Lavender’s death and adds that to the weight of his renewed responsibility to his men (427-437).
In this short story by Tim O’Brien, Lieutenant Jimmy cross leads a platoon of men in the Vietnam War. Unable to keep his thoughts from his unrequited love interested, Martha, Cross allowed his platoon to become lax in their duties and mentally removed from the war. The conflict arises when one of his men, Ted Lavender, is killed on a mission. The conflict is resolved when Lieutenant Cross abandons his youthful fantasy world for the reality of the war he is living in. Cross finds new purpose in the vigilant leadership of his men.
He was always a person with an easy smile, a good heart, and willingness to want to help someone in need. He was loved by everyone; family, friends, and fellow troops. His dedication for the troops was shown by his compassionate work style and caring approach in regards to his work for he spent endless hours trying to find ways to improve service members, veterans and their loved ones lives.

War and violence effects every individual differently. In Tim Obrien’s “The Things They Carried”, the characters are bombarded with inter-personal issues due to their long-term exposure to war and violence in the Vietnam War. Each character in the story carried a bit of baggage with them, both figuratively and metaphorically. The characters struggle to separate the real world from the world of war and violence that they have been living in for an extended period of time. Throughout the story, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross and his fellow men are effected drastically from exposure to the violence of the Vietnam War.
While all the characters in O’Brien’s short story “The Things They Carried” brought heavy physical baggage, they also all carried heavy emotional baggage, made up of love, fear, and longing among many other things. In the beginning of the story, the author lists the literal things that some of the men carried with them in the war. The things that these men carried seemed somewhat strange at first, but as the story proceeds, it is easier to understand why they brought things such as pantyhose with them. The baggage carried by the soldiers Cross, Lavender represented emotional issues that weighed them down while they were at were. This story conveys what soldiers have to deal with along with the stress of being at war.
Jimmy Cross is a protagonist because the story is about him dealing with the loss of his friend Tim Lavender. Cross is a lieutenant of the Alpha Company fighting the war in Vietnam. He does not care about the war and he does not want to be a leader . Jimmy is insecure about everything he does and he wonders if he makes the right decisions. His way of escaping is to day dream about Martha. She is an English major at Mount Sebastian, New Jersey and she sends him photos and letters regularly. She writes poetry letters and never mentions the war. Her letters are very friendly, full of all her activities and details of her life. She always signs her letters “Love Martha”(p.315), but she is not in love with him. He know this but dreams of her and him in a relationship. He carries Martha’s letters with him in a backpack and looks at them every night while dreaming about how his life could be with her intimately. He carries a
In the chapter “The Things They Carried” by Tim O'Brien. Leaders are known for their bravery, loyalty and commitment to their profession. Lieutenant jimmy cross on the other hand was fighting in the war physically but not mentally.Lieutenant jimmy cross was distracted, worried and these emotions would affect him and his team. There are circumstances where he encountered dangerous situations that could have killed him immediately, for these reasons i don’t believe he’s a suitable leader.
The short story, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien is a compilation of actual experiences and fictional experiences. O’Brien is a Vietnam veteran and has experienced the war first hand. In the text, O’Brien creates the characters Rat Kiley, Henry Dobbins, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, and Ted Lavender through the tangible and abstract “weight” these characters carry. In the story, “The Things They Carried,” O’Brien’s use of description best expresses the characters personalities and their emotional baggage.
The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien is told in third person and describes many characters, yet First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross is unsound undoubtedly the focus of the story. It is his thoughts and feelings that the reader is given the most insight into. From this, it is easy to see the impact certain events have on him. First, the reader is given a description of a memory when Cross and Martha went to a theater to see Bonnie and Clyde (O'Brien 471). During the movie, it is revealed that Cross placed his hand on Martha's knee, only to be looked at in a "sad, somber way" (O'Brien 471). This seems to be the moment Cross realized that Martha didn't feel the same way he felt for her. Even knowing this, the First Lieutenant still dreamed about
Every quest consists of five parts. The novel Flight by Sherman Alexie demonstrates all five components. The first component of a quest is a quester, or someone who goes on a quest. In Flight the quester is Zits, a fifteen year old foster kid. The next part of a quest is where the quester needs to go. The place Zits needs to go is into five different people’s bodies, in five different time periods, and experience the things they did. The first time Zits is transported into another’s body is after Justice convinces Zits to open fire in a bank and Zits gets shot. The third component of a quest, the stated reason to go, explains why Zits was transported into those people’s bodies. The stated reason for Zits is because
