Macbeth is presented as the main protagonist of Shakespeare's play 'Macbeth'. He first appears as the courageous and heroic Thane of Glamis with his rank of general in the Scottish armed forces. As Macbeth is portrayed in this scene, he has already greatly assisted in the defeat the Norwegian forces and responsible for the slaying of the rebel leader, Macdonald. Despite his heroic efforts, the encounter with the three witches and their daunting prophecies slowly causes the noble Macbeth to reveal a dark and twisted nature. At this point, the audience is left unsure as to what Macbeth's true personality and nature are really like.

Individuals continually deal with general events that affect their personalities. This can either strengthen an individual’s character or lead to one’s demise. William Shakespeare acknowledges these human experiences in The Tragedy of Macbeth with his focus on the protagonist, Macbeth. Fixating his focus on Macbeth, Shakespeare thoroughly portrays the protagonist as a frail human, easily influenced by his environment and personal relationships. Although Macbeth’s decisions determine his plight, he finds himself transgressing when he believes his prophesized throne is in danger. By eliminating what he perceives as threats, he sacrifices his honor, his friendship with Banquo, his wife, and his sanity, resulting in a personality change.

Lady Macbeth Character Change Lady Macbeth’s character has many changes over the course of the play Macbeth. She goes from a confident, strong, determined woman to an unstable and vulnerable figure. At first, she provokes violence, then she tries to save Macbeth, her husband, and protect him, but eventually, she just loses herself in the midst of a plot of her own making. At the beginning of the play, Lady Macbeth is introduced as ruthless and as someone who would do anything to make her husband king. She can be cruel and immoral if it leads to getting her way.

   In the beginning of the play, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Macbeth is merely a nobleman and a Scottish general in King Duncan's army. Macbeth later becomes the deserving Thane of Glamis and Cawdor and the undeserving King of Scotland (Dominic 255). In the beginning Macbeth is a man with good intentions and a good heart; sometimes he just has a hard time following his good instincts and heart. Macbeth's ambition and the persuasion of his wife lead him to commit several horrible deeds. Macbeth is brave, good-hearted, disobeying, easily persuaded, overly-ambitious, and literal-minded and unimaginative (Scott 281).

Macbeth starts out as the thane of Glamis and steadily rises to become King of Scotland. The higher Macbeth rose on his road of power the more corrupt and evil he became. In Macbeth by William Shakespeare, there is a great amount of disorder due to one character’s ambitions. Macbeth is this character, and he lets his want for the throne take over him, leaving a trail of blood behind him. Macbeth’s character changes drastically from the beginning, to the end due to his ambition taking over him, giving the story a plot and much character interaction.

   In the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, the characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth decide, in a great fit of ambition, to kill King Duncan.  Later in the play we see the same two characters undergo a transformation in their personalities after murdering the King.  Macbeth begins the play as a noble soldier and gradually changes into an ambitious and murdering tyrant.  Lady Macbeth begins as a strong, ambitious woman who dominates her husband and gradually changes into a weak and guilt-ridden woman.  This essay will explore the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth before and after the murder of King Duncan.
