In addition to the plot, characters are equally important to contributing the theme. Hannah the main character, has a very happy life, she has clothes , food and two loving parents. In the beginning of the book she is arrogant shows the darkness by not wanting to understand what her ancestors went through. As she transforms from Hannah to Chaya, she changes and sees the Holocaust differently. She sees families connecting and the beauty of having people when you need them. Shemual, is brave and humorous, he helps people laugh in a time when they face death. “The Red Army is advancing with giant strides… Hitler will not be able to harm us, even if he wants to…” (8). The quote comes from a novel, Night, by Eliezer Wiesel, who was a survivor throughout the Holocaust. Elie and his father are the protagonists as they strive and suffer to survive the rough times. The two gentlemen are split apart from the rest of their family when they arrive at Auschwitz. On a daily basis, Elie and his father went through hell, whether it was being whipped or just being screeched at. Time passed by at a tremendously slow rate. Elie’s father was sick for weeks, but Elie couldn’t help rather than giving up his ration of bread and soup every day. Day after day, being sick and tired had finally come to an end. The U.S.

The film mainly illustrates the life of Chaya, a politically active young woman who grows to embrace her culture after bonding with Simcha, a young Hasidic Jewish boy. Chaya very rarely visits her parents, and understands and cares little about their past and their experience with the Holocaust. Her mother refuses to speak about it and spends her energy baking
Hana and Wilbur both faced character versus social world conflicts. Wilbur faced it when he was born Mr. Arable wanting to kill him because he was the runt of the litter he was the smallest on the group of pigs that were born. Fern spoke up and saved Wilbur that day she started caring for him and feeding him so that he would grow to be full sized pig. Hana faced many issues just because she was Jewish and born into a Jewish family. She originally was growing up as a normal child, until the social world conflicts started wreaking havoc on the life of her and her family. I started out as trivial things here and there but over time it was complete segregation. She was not allowed to play with her friends, go to the park, the movies, even the time she could leave her home and be home by were ordered. She was sent with her brother to a concentration camp where many people were killed just for being Jewish. This was done under the leadership on Hitler and the Nazi’s.
A few of the characters had high emotions, helping the setup of the atmosphere. Not all the characters were overcome by emotion though, nor did they suffer from raw nerves or crying. Ed Crane, Sarah’s father, was the character that most prominently shown how he was overcome by his emotions. Before he was sent to prison, he was always depressed and filled with sorrow because of the death of his wife, choosing to drown his feelings out with alcohol. When he was drunk at the pub, he was overcome by anger when fellow drinkers began to trash talk about his wife.
Nanapush has the self confidence to survive. And he never elevates himself above others. He says: “Power dies, power goes under and gutter out, ungraspable. It is momentary, quick of flight and liable to deceive. As soon as you rely on the possession it is gone. Forget that it ever existed, and it returns. I never made the mistake of thinking that I owned my own strength that was my secret” (177). He is proud of his culture and heritage. He is a good hunter. He teaches Eli how to hunt though he is far away from him. According to him, the good times are in the past. So he shares the past.
The novel Night records the terrors of a 15 year old Elie Weisel. Elie tells his past of being taken of his home, and put into different concentration camps. These camps include: Birkenau, Auschwitz, Buna, and Gleiwitz. In these camps he is put up to a test that makes him question his faith--and his sanity. These changes in Elie’s life will change not only himself, but the relationships of the people associated with him.
Evil overshadows good because Elie’s personality had been stained with the thoughts of survival. As time passed he was no longer the innocent , changed by the pain and suffering brought around him. He lost his innocence and learned the ability to lie and commit acts of selfishness. When Elie has nothing he begins to question why people are doing this to all these people. Elie says “One more stab to the heart, one more reason to hate. One less reason to live."(Wiesel 134) Elie is overwhelmed by the changes in his life that he begins to give into himself. Elie was once small and the world was open to him and the next its taken from him in the blink of an eye. Near the end of the Jewish New Year Elie accuses God again. ‘Why do you still trouble
Hannah was still a teenage girl who did not want to remember the holocaust. Aunt Eva remains a very important character in both the book and movie, she loves Hannah very much and remembers her young friend who passed away during the holocaust. Rivkah and Hannah’s new friends have been included in both too. The plot of both were both an emotional journey through Hannah’s life in the holocaust, furthermore, they both follow the same story of Hannah ending up in 1942 during the holocaust. They both show her life in the camp and how she eventually returned home. “Always remember” was a huge theme in both the book and movie. Hannah realized she needs to remember the sacrifices, fear, and hope her ancestors had to go through. The book and movie kept the same journey and learning experience throughout Hannah’s entire
Moche the Beadle, from the memoir Night, written by the author Elie Wiesel, serves as a mentor to the main character. In the novel, Elie spends most of his time learning to be closer to God. Moche, who was captured by the Nazis yet managed to escape, returns from the near death experience to warn Elie that these people are coming to Sighet. The most important things to the Beadle are his closeness to God and knowledge. Moche’s devotion to God is apparent because he stays out of the way from others to worship. The narrator describes “Nobody ever felt embarrassed by him, Nobody ever felt encumbered by his presence”(Weisel, 13). In simpler terms, this quote comes to mean “Moche caused no one to feel embarrassed by or burdened by him.” His
Elie Wiesel’s, Night, depicts the life of a faithful Jew, Elie, who wants to learn more about his religion. Elie asks a local beggar, Moishe The Beadle to teach him about the Kabbalah. The Kabbalah is a Jewish teaching which helps with one's understanding of Judaism. Elie goes against his father’s wishes on learning the Kabbalah as he is too young. One can see through his devotion in learning the Kabbalah that Elie is really invested through his faith . Elie is quick to discover the Jewish religion won’t be able to help him in the Nazi concentration camps. Elie’s view on God and the Jewish faith changes throughout the monstrosities in the Nazi death camps. Elie is a young teenager and feels like he should learn the Kabbalah at such a young age and gets a devoted teacher in Moishe the Beadle.

This theme is to always remember the tragedy of the Holocaust, and all of the terrible events and deaths that happened in the camps and all throughout the duration of Hitler and the Nazi’s ruling. This detailed story is also about mankind's inability to prevent the evilness of one man, punishing others for their beliefs. Both the book and the movie make this meaning very clear through the thoughts and actions of characters, and the overall plot of the story taking place. Most of the actions of the characters are the same as well. For example, at the end of both stories being told, Hannah goes into the gas chambers for Rivka so she could live longer and continue her life.
