A Hero
“A hero can be anyone even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a little boy’s shoulder to let him know that the world hadn’t ended.” -Batman, The Dark Knight Rises. A hero is a person who is brave, smart, determined and shows excellent leaderships skills. A hero can band together a group of people to accomplish a similar goal. One example of a hero is a doctor because they vow to try and help people become the healthiest they can be. The character Odysseus from Homer’s epic called The Odyssey is an example of a hero. Odysseus demonstrates these qualities when he goes on his journey home. He is persistent on his course to Ithaca. August from The Secret Life of Bees also shows the characteristics of a hero. Although August and Odysseus have two different ambitions they both exhibit the traits of a hero.
In the book The Odyssey by Homer the main character Odysseus shows the characteristic of a hero. While on their journey, Odysseus and his men encountered a Cyclops. They get stuck in a cave but Odysseus gets them out by being their leader. Odysseus’s first idea is to get the Cyclops drunk. When the Cyclops is drunk he asks Odysseus what his name is. On page 903 Odysseus replies with, “ ‘My name is nohbody’ ”. The Cyclops soon falls asleep after getting drunk. Odysseus knows he can’t just leave because the door is blocked by a giant boulder only the Cyclops could move. So he devises a plan to attack the Cyclops. He and his men stab the Cyclops in the eye. Odysseus used his smarts and wits by telling Polyphemus his name was “nobody’ so, the Cyclops would tell everyone nobody was hurting him. Polyphemus the Cyclops states on page 905 of The Odyssey, “ ‘Nohbdy, Nohbdy’s tricked me. Nohbdy’s ruined me’ ”. When Odysseus and his men were leaving the cave they hid under the sheep who were also escaping the Cyclops cave. On page 906 of Homer's epic The Odyssey states “Odysseus escaping the cave of Polyphemus under the belly of the ram.” This shows how Odysseus was clever and thought of hiding under the belly of the sheep. If he hadn’t done this Odysseus and his men would have been eaten by the Cyclops and would’ve never gone home. Odysseus also used his good leadership to
In my eyes a hero is a person who shows courage, is humble, does not give up, and is someone everybody can relate to. The protagonist in “The Odyssey” by Homer, Odysseus is a hero because although he is emotional throughout the book and lets his emotions take over his actions, he displays immense courage and perseveres through his journey and hardships.
A hero is someone who is humble and protects others. Hero’s also show leadership. This story comes from Prentice Hall Literature on page 980 “The Odyssey” by Homer. Odysseus departs from Troy after being in the Trojan war for twenty years. Odysseus shows many heroic traits throughout this story. For Example, Odysseus showed intelligence when he tricked the Cyclops named Polyphemus, son of Poseidon and blinded him. Odysseus also showed leadership when he motivated his team to keep on rowing towards Scylla and Charybdis. Finally, Odysseus showed determination when he conquered all his obstacles and still survived even though he lost his team.
Many think being a hero is having super powers, but on the contrary it's more than that. A hero is one who is distinguished for their courage and bravery, and looked upon for their great deeds. A hero like this is not just found in modern society today, but in mythology as well. Odysseus is a hero because he returns home with a changed perspective which reflects his heroic abilities, such as his bravery and dedication to return home.
The trait of heroism is something that has changed over thousands of years. Today’s heros have different traits than those heroes of the Trojan War. However, a few have survived the test of time. Many of modern day heroes, as well as past heroes, do hold these long enduring traits, like Nelson Mandela, Marcus Luttrell, Louis Zamperini, and the fictional Iron Man. Odysseus, the main character in The Odyssey by Homer, portrays the traits necessary to be dubbed a hero. One is a hero if he or she shows leadership, bravery, resilience, and creativity throughout their actions.
My name is Nohbdy'"("The Cyclops" lines 312-315). Odysseus' astuteness is apparent in this situation because he refused to reveal his identity to Polyphemus while he was vulnerable. His decision prevented the other Cyclops from coming to aid of Polyphemus. By precluding this beforehand, he demonstrated his heroic quality of wiliness. The ingenuity established by these actions personifies Odysseus as a hero.
Odysseus has many heroic qualities such as cleverness, physical strength, and bravery. First, Odysseus tricked the cyclops, Polyphemus, by telling him his name was “Nobody” ( The Odyssey 1058). This showed cleverness because Odysseus gave the cyclops a bottle of wine to make him drunk, which caused him to fall asleep. Then, Odysseus found some wood and sharpened it to stab Polyphemus in the eye. While Polyphemus was blind, he asked Odysseus what his name was, he said it was Nobody and made the cyclops believed that was his name. Another example of when he showed a heroic quality is when Odysseus tricked the suitors by doing an impossible task he knew no one could do and it was to string
A Hero is someone who is looked up to by people, does things people remember them by and does things for other people. By today’s standards, odysseus is a hero. The reason why odysseus is a hero is because he is looked up to by many people, and he has done many things people remember him by. Throughout Odysseus’s journey him and his men encountered many things for people to remember them by and look up to them.
What makes a hero? In “The Odyssey”, an epic by Homer, we were asked whether Odysseus was a hero or not. But what makes a hero? In movies, heroes are depicted as someone with superhuman strength or the ability to fly, but is this what a hero truly is? Odysseus fought through many hard battles against unimaginable monsters, and without him many would have died. Odysseus is a hero because he was both clever and brave.
A hero is someone who puts others before themselves. In the epic poem “The Odyssey” by Homer, Odysseus is knows how to trick anyone into anything, is helpful to his crew, and tries to learn from his mistakes. Therefore Odysseus is motivational, has leadership and has courage to do whatever he desires If Odysseus didn’t motivate his crew they probably wouldn’t have been alive for most of the story. “I drove my big hand spike deep in my embers charring it again and cheered my men with battle talk to keep their courage up” (Homer, 323).
Life is about making choices. Always do your best to make the right ones and always do your best to learn from the wrong ones, -Unknown. In the epic poem, “The Odyssey” by Homer, the main character shows positive traits of a leader. I believe that Odysseus is primarily an effective leader. Now, yes he made poor judgment calls but that’s what being human is about, making mistakes learning from them, and moving forward.
What do you think a hero is? I think a hero is someone who cares about others, has a kind personality, and is a good leader. In the text ‘The Odyssey, people have argued whether or not the main character, Odysseus, is a hero. I think that Odysseus is a modern hero because he is loyal, smart, and he is brave.
When we hear the word 'hero,' more than one idea comes to mind. Not only do we think of people that we look up to in our world, but we also think of heroes in the fictional world. To be a hero can mean a variety of different things. Leaders, singers, and even parents can be a hero that someone looks up too. But in the fictional world, a hero is someone who has learned from his or hers journey to come out a changed person. Some characters complete the journey, while others do not quite make it to the end. In The Odyssey, Odysseus takes more than one leap of faith on his journey to become a hero by learning from his mistakes, making personal sacrifices, and becoming a better man.
“ Sing in me, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending, the wanderer, harried for years on end, after he plundered the stronghold on the proud height of Troy.” (Homer page 751 lines: 0-4) That was an opening prayer from The Odyssey. The Odyssey is about a 20 year-long travel of a man named Odysseus. He traveled to Troy facing the dangers on many mythical creatures and many fictional creatures. This king of Ithaca, left his beloved wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus, that he has not seen since his son was a young child. Odysseus expresses his traits, that helps him survive the obstacles he faces. Odysseus’ traits are bravery, curiosity, and intelligence.
A hero is someone who is determined to have courage or outstanding achievements and is also recognized for the impact they have on the community. Odysseus is the most obvious candidate for the hero in the story, because he is the main character and the story is written around his journey home. However, when The Odyssey is critically read with the main focus on the heroism of Odysseus, there are many reasons why he would not be seen as a hero. In an article by Emily Nicole Howell, an English I teacher at Rustin High School, she talks about how Odysseus
