Is Odysseus a Hero?
What makes a hero? In “The Odyssey”, an epic by Homer, we were asked whether Odysseus was a hero or not. But what makes a hero? In movies, heroes are depicted as someone with superhuman strength or the ability to fly, but is this what a hero truly is? Odysseus fought through many hard battles against unimaginable monsters, and without him many would have died. Odysseus is a hero because he was both clever and brave. Some people might say the things he did were unheroic. After all, Odysseus’ actions were reckless and his men never made it back home, but this is wrong. In the epic, Odysseus and his men traveled to an island inhabited by cyclops’. While they were exploring the island they became trapped in a cave with one of the cyclops. Without Odysseus’ clever thinking/planning, him and his men would have died. Part of Odysseus’ ingenious plan was telling the giant his name was Nohbdy, so when they injured his eye the giant would yell “Nohbdy, Nohbdy’s tricked me, Nohbdy’s ruined me!” which wouldn’t alarm his brothers on the island because he is saying nobody had hurt him. (ll.357-358) Odysseus also proved he was a hero by devising a plan that would work to sail past the sirens while also listening to what the blind prophet Tiresias told him. He wasn’t told how to protect his men from being seduced by the sirens, he had to come up with a strategy that would work all on his own. He knew he had to listen to the Sirens but if his crew heard the sirens they would be led to their destruction so, “(Odysseus) carried wax along the line, and laid it thick on their ears.” so they weren't compelled by the sirens’ loving voices. He faced many tough challenges on his journey home, but he overcame them by not being scared in the face of danger. When their ship came upon Scylla and Charybdis he was ready to face the two monsters. He was willing to fight through Scylla and Charybdis to save him and his men, “I tied up my Cuirass and took two heavy spears and made my way up the foredeck- thinking to see her first from there.” he was ready to fight through the incredibly terrifying monsters, which would have scared any other man away. (ll. 788-790) Even when all odds were stacked against him, he took on the challenge. He knew he was outnumbered, but still he continued and devised a plan of attack to take his house and wife back. In the end they won, “In blood and dust he saw that crowd all fallen, many and many slain.” Odysseus was a fearless hero he knew what he was up against and fought hard to defeat the odds.
