The Fennec Fox, also known as the “desert fox”, is the national animal of Algeria. It is a small, nocturnal fox found in North Africa. Its huge ears are its most distinctive feature, that they use to dissipate heat. They have adapted to live in a desert environment. They weigh about 1.5–3.5lbs, with a length between 24–41 cm, is about 20.3cm tall and live up to about 14 years, also their ears are between 10-15 cm long. The Fennec Fox is an omnivore. They mainly eat plants, rodents, insects, birds, eggs, and rabbits. Also, their hearing is so good that they can hear their prey underground. The biggest predator to the Fennec Fox is African Eagle Owls. Sadly they are often captured and sold as pets. Jerboa Jerboas are desert rodents found in Northern Africa and Asia. Jerboas are nocturnal, so during the day when it’s hot, they shelter in burrows. At night they leave the burrows when temperatures cool down. Their burrows are nearby plant life. Most jerboas eat plant material as the main component of their diet, and they can’t eat hard seeds. Also, some jerboas even eat beetles and other insects they come across. Most species of jerboa have amazing hearing that they use to avoid becoming the prey of nocturnal predators. The lifespan of a jerboa is typically around six years. Barbary Stag aka Atlas Deer The Atlas Deer is a subspecies of red deer that is native to North Africa. The Atlas deer is the only member of the deer family that is native to Africa. It thrives in dense, humid forested areas of Algeria, originally they were found in Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco. But their habitat is now thought to be restricted to a coastal strip in eastern Algeria. The Barbary stag has or has had predators like the Barbary lion, the Atlas bear, and the Barbary leopard, but they have either become extinct or are endangered. Factors threatening the survival of the Atlas deer include habitat destruction and poaching, the Atlas Deer is now endangered.
