Charles Barkley once said, “he doesn't create controversies, he just brings them to our attention”, he is at it again.
The basketball analyst for Turner Sports and the NBA isn't backing away from the comments he made on the recent interview on 97.5 “The Fanatic” sports radio in Philadelphia on Tuesday, December 2-3. Barkley said they were wrong to attack businesses and police and that people who torched buildings in Ferguson are "scumbags".
Barkley supports the decision made by the grand jury not to indict officer Darren Wilson in the Michael Brown shooting.
In an interview on Tuesday at CNN, Barkley states that this situation is ridiculous. Destroying your community will not solve anything, it will create an uprise in tension. Barkley believes that the case wasn't a homicide. And just like the case where several police took a black man named Eric Garner to the ground by a chokehold and unnecessary force, there were no thoughts of killing this man. Throughout these cases, people were killed because they were refusing to be arrested. Leading to the point where the police have to use force to bring them down.

Barkley believes there are too many people asking help from cops but then cry out for racial discrimination when something happens. At times African Americans are racially discriminated against. Racism is wrong but there is always a reason for something, right? There is always somebody in a group who acts out and causes trouble. So we cannot put all the blame on the cops. Barkley states "We as black people, we have a lot of crooks. We can't just wait until something like (the Brown shooting) happens. We have to look at ourselves in the mirror," he said of people in black communities. "There is a reason that they racially profile us in the way they do. Sometimes it is wrong, and sometimes it is
The Investigation concluded that Officer Wilson was within his rights to fire shots at Brown as self-defense. The world was shocked after the court’s ruling. Yet again, the Black community were in awe as another unfair ruling was made. People began to get furious with the law in the disbelief as to why these White men were getting away with murder. And as we see before, rioters took their anger and frustration out on the city, bringing more damagers to a city who were already suffering and trying to rebuild from the last rioting damages. From here, the Black Lives Matter community began to come worrisome as the Black Community lost case after case. Their protest did not have an impact on the judicial system. Many felt as if defeat was taking over due to justice not being
Four years ago Danroy “DJ” henry Jr. from Easton, Ma, was killed by a New york police officer. Since then the nation seen the death of trayvon Martin who was kiilled by a neighborhood watch volunteer and Michael brown who recently just got killed by a policeman in Ferguson, Missoury. However, the story of Eric Garner is shown to be an ongoing issue between Eric Garner and the New york police department weeks prior to the incident. In the video, Garner is seeing expressing to the policeman that he was tired of being harassed by the same policeman and he was not selling cigarettes. During the whole conversation more officers started to approach the scene and eventually as Garner was speaking the officers moved to arrest a much taller Eric Garner. After Garner resisted the arrest, officer daniel pantaleo approached garner and put him in what is an illegal chokehold and brought him to the ground. Four other officers restrained Garner in the sidewalk where he repeated “ I cant Breathe” 11 times to the police officers that was in the scene. After the incident the police department stated it was an unfortunate situation of man who had previous altercation with the police prior to july 17th 2014. After the incident medical examiners determine Garner’s cause of death was due to neck compression, and the compression of his chest and contributing health factors such as asthma and cardiovascular condition that correlates with his death. On December 3rd 2014 a grand jury decided not to
It is one that everyone is familiar with due to its high profile coverage. Although this incident occurred in St. Louis, Missouri, it is very relevant to police shootings all over the country. As a short recap, police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed unarmed teen Michael Brown. Ultimately, Darren Wilson was not charged with any crime. Wilson, like many officers before him, argued that he was afraid for his life and therefore used his weapon in self-defense. Unfortunately, this argument has been heard many times after Michael Brown’s death as well. When Laquan McDonald was shot and killed in Chicago in 2014, Jason Van Dyke “feared for his life”; dash-camera footage, though, showed otherwise. Police personnel and city officials even went so far in this cover-up as to pay Laquan’s mother millions of dollars not to speak to the media about what happened. Although video of the shooting was available in 2014, the video itself was not released to the public until late 2015, after Rahm was re-elected to mayoral office. As more details surfaced, it then became clear to the public that not only did the officers and top law enforcement attempt to hide this incident, but the Cook County State’s Attorney was also involved. I argue that had there been more diversity on the force, or in the very least sensitivity training, maybe these officers would have seen a person and been more compassionate, instead of seeing a threat and
This incident would provoke an inferno of violence and hatred that still exists on some level today. The unwillingness of the police to defend the rights of an African-American and who failed to arrest the men until some 48 hours after the murder took place, only succeeded in adding fuel to this already smoldering fire.
In America the confederate flag is often known as a symbol of slavery and abuse. Daniel Barkley argued a completely different argument in this text. He stated the confederate flag was removed from South Carolina’s State Capitol because African Americans began to make this their “black power flag”.
Later the article explains that Wilson, the officer that shot michael brown was let go out of federal court. With no charges. The article reports on the riots and protests that have been taking place in the town of ferguson.
On August 9, 2014 Mike Brown, an 18-year-old African American was shot and killed a by Officer Darren Wilson of the Ferguson Police Department. Mr. Brown was unarmed when he was shot and killed. The officer shots were fired when Brown allegedly reached for a gun out of the officer’s vehicle. Brown proceeded to walk towards the officer with his hands up and was killed in the act of self-defense. The officer was found not guilty, and the city reacted in a way that was positive and very much so negative. They protested and looted areas. They set buildings on fire as well as cars, and vandalized many stores of the Ferguson Community. Some felt the news, well certain news stations and or publications didn’t print the views from both sides. They
While deliberations were being conducted by the grand jury, it still did not quell the protests that were escalating rapidly in the Ferguson Missouri area. Online circulation of individual accounts that Michael Brown had his hands up when he was engaged by Officer Brown coined the phrase “Hands up, Don’t Shoot,” which was further escalated by Reverend Al Sharpton when he spoke at a rally in Clayton MO, where he stated "And if you 're angry, throw your arms up," Sharpton said. "If you want justice, throw your arms up. If you want answers, throw your arms up, because that 's the sign Michael was using." (Corley, 2015,) which further fueled the flames of civil unrest within the Ferguson community due to its rapid circulation to the populace on social media and online news venues. After a thorough review of witness testimonies and evidence collected at the scene of the incident, both the
On August 9, 2014 Officer Darren Wilson with the Ferguson Missouri Police Department was on his way to a reported strong-arm robbery at a local convenience store in the city. While on his way, he observed two African-American males walking in the middle of the roadway (#1). Officer Wilson realized the pair matched the description given of the suspects from the robbery call in which he had been dispatched. While still in his patrol vehicle, Officer Wilson drove up to the males, and began speaking with Michael Brown. Officer Wilson told Brown to not walk in the lanes of traffic (#1).
On Nov 25 ,2015 Laquan McDonald died after being shot 16 times for walking away from a police officer. Too many people saw Laquan as “another black person killed by a cop”. But to officer Jason Van Dyke he believes his client was justified. It took 13 months for the charges but Jason was finally charged with 1st degree murder. On CNN they reported that “ The video shows McDonald running, then later walking down the middle of the street. He was heading towards the police but then he decides to walk away. When he starts to spin around he is brought down by a barrage of bullets”. Laquan was unarmed and wasn’t assaulting anyone during the moment of the shooting, the officer predicted that Laquan was dangerous; armed because of his certain skin color and dress code. Protesters during that week took the streets of chicago and remembered Laquan Mcdonald, the protesters were being peaceful and doing no harm. They even told police officers Happy Thanksgiving to thank each and everyone for their
The article "Following "Horrible Tragedy," S.C. Mayor Pledges Body Cameras for Cops" is about a police officer shooting an unarmed black man in South Carolina. The shooting cause a lot of argument whether or not that the shooting was justice or not. Some people think that the shooting is because of racism but some think not.
August 9th 2014, Ferguson Missouri, an unarmed black teen Michael Brown was shot, and fatally wounded by a white police officer by the name of Darren Wilson. As a direct result of deciding not to indict Officer Wilson, the black community was out raged! Riots, looting, and damage to businesses soon followed the judge’s ruling. The trial was unlike normal trials which were treated with more expedience in the process, the grand jury in Officer Wilson case met for three months and 25 days. (Buchanan, et. al. 2014)
In the article “Chicago police have no regard for lives of minorities,” by Mark Berman from The Washington Post the issue of racism within the Chicago police department is brought forth. The department itself says it is failing to hold officers accountable and not doing enough to combat a “justified” lack of trust from the community. A task force has been researching this issue and they found has come to the point that some in the community do not feel safe in any encounter with the police. The force discovered that people of color have disproportionately negative experiences with the police over an extended period of time. Mayor Rahm Emmanuel stated that we do not a task force to know that there is racism in Chicago, but the real question
However, it may seem that the concept might not exist because it is often referred to the idea of racist perspectives and judgments. According to retired professional basketball player Charles Barkley, he mentioned in a CNN interview that “we as black people, we have a lot of crooks. We can’t just wait until something threatens or hurts a person of minority. We have to look at ourselves in the mirror” and continues stating that “there is a reason that they racially profile us in the way they do. Sometimes it is wrong, and sometimes it is right” (Cobb). Barkley’s statement presents the idea that racial profiling is utilized toward certain racial groups and ethnic minorities through the idea of implicit stereotypes where groups are categorized based on their qualities and social features. He wants the black community to understand that they are cast away from other racial groups because of how they are recognized both physically and stereotypically. The idea of racial profiling is used in certain circumstances to show that police officials will use their “racial insight” to identify an individual who would be suspected of committing illegal acts based on their racial identity or religious background. In addition, Rudolph Giuliani addressed on a Fox News Sunday interview that the relationship between police officers and the black community have poor interaction with one another because of the police department’s lack of responsibility to properly train their officers and to diversify the department (Cobb). However, Giuliani also adds that it is the black community’s responsibility to understand the reason why police officers gather in large groups within their community. Statistics show that African-Americans commit eight times as many murders compared to other racial groups (Cobb). It is important
The heated issue of police brutality and police officers violating civil rights has extensively covered media headlines for several years. Hundreds of people are killed every year by police officers, and many of these cases bring up issues of police brutality. More often than not, it is usually a white police officer and an african american offender encounter that sparks media attention. The shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri is just one of these cases that has caused a major divide in the United States. Michael Brown was fatally shot by Officer Wilson after an unfriendly encounter in the streets. Those who believe that Officer Wilson made the right decision in shooting Michael Brown, point to the fact that the grand jury chose not to indict him. Although Darren WIlson was not charged after the shooting of unarmed Michael Brown, some people believe that his actions were unlawful and he should have received some sort of punishment for his wrongdoing. Acknowledging all of the facts of the investigation, Officer Wilson did not act properly in the circumstances of the time.
