Cheating Is Getting Worse Cheating is a problem worldwide, everyone can admit they've cheated before or at least say they’ve witnessed someone cheat before. The term “cheating” can be interpreted in different ways, according to (Webster’s Dictionary) cheating has several meanings “a deception to profit yourself”, “not faithful to a spouse or lover” and “violating accepted standards or rules”. People have been caught red handed while cheating, while others were lucky enough to avoid the consequences. The real question is why do people take the risk and decide to cheat knowing that there is a consequence? Cheating is an epidemic spread that is becoming worse, it's becoming worse in schools, sports and relationships.
Today’s generation has been showing the highest test scores, students have received all kinds of honors which include scholarships. “In 2009, 60 schools had been reported to the Pennsylvania of Education of suspicion of cheating” (New Orleans Magazine). They were reported of getting nearly practically impossible test scores. Not only are students accused of cheating but the teachers themselves are accused of cheating. Some atlanta teachers were interviewed according to (New Orleans Magazine) “Atlanta teachers said they cheated because they were afraid of losing their jobs”. Not only that “56 schools were investigated, 44 of them had participated in organized cheating on standardized tests” (New Orleans Magazine). Teachers changed answers on student’s tests and determined if the students would be bumped up a grade. Students that often cheat are driven by an incentive to earn or obtain undeserved grades. Most students cheat to achieve a specific goal whether it’s a degree or some kind of certificate. Students have a bad mindset which causes procrastination, perhaps one day a student would be out partying or keeping themselves busy knowing they had homework to do. Later when it comes to the last minute they just need a quick response so they rely on cheating. With today’s technology you can get almost anything over the internet. The use of the internet can provide several assignments for a student including essays. This is rather known as plagiarism or otherwise cheating, a student could look up a
My first tough term is cheating? How can someone clearly define cheating when the definition varies by the person? Simply, nobody can. However in my point of view, cheating can vary by each relationship. One may agree to an open relationship and almost anything goes whereas another would hate it if I even looked at another lady. Ultimately, cheating to me is if the intentions of my significant other are to form a new relationship with somebody, purposely trying to shake things up. What I mean is I have no problem with my lady and me going to a bar and letting her get free drinks all night by flirting with other guys; emotional manipulation influencing them to buy her a drink or two. Why would I be okay with this? Because I not only have
Cheating has become very normal to students on tests or quizzes. Students don’t consider the consequences of cheating on a test (Source A). If you just walked into a classroom, most probably you would see students cheating on their classwork or quizzes. Measures should be taken to reduce the amount of cheating on tests or quizzes
Everybody is familiar with the concept that cheating is wrong. However, the culture we live in today is becoming less black and white and showing all the different shades of grey. Cheating is becoming a situational topic. In some situations it is considered the right thing to do. Everyone has cheating in some aspect of life, whether it be school, work, sports, games, using forms of enhancements or forms of deception. Cheating is all around and i very unpreventable.
Another theme presented in multiple articles was a rise in cheating. Source number one, “Do Standardized Tests Show an Accurate View of Students’ Abilities”, believes that because the push to do well on standardized tests is such a priority, “some institutions consider cheating” (Concordia University). Source number two, “Is the Use of Standardized Test Improving Education in America,” disagrees, explaining that cheating by administrators and students is not an issue, and not a reason to terminate standardized testing. This source also clarifies that “[i]t is likely that some cheating occurs, but some people cheat on their tax returns also, and the solution is not to abolish taxation” (Standardized Tests - ProCon.org). Source number three, “Test Our Children Well”, proposes a solution that by using the “testing effect”, “teachers could develop new tests questions each week for each class…” (Emanuel 10) and by doing so, will eliminate the opportunity for student to cheat on exams.
In the contemporary American education system high-stakes standardized testing has resulted in a focus on extensive test preparation, as well as a large increase in the numbers of teachers cheating by alternating their students' test scores. Both these phenomena are a direct consequence of the incentives and punishments directly linked to standardized test results.
Leaving us with the question as to why people cheat? One of the first things that comes to peoples mind when thinking of affairs are all set towards Hollywood rumors about celebrities, when in reality it can happen to anyone; “Affairs can occur in happy marriages as well as in troubled ones. Although the involved spouse may not be getting enough from the marriage, sometimes the involved spouse is not giving enough. Reasons for EMI include low self-esteem, relationship deficits (e.g., lack of affection), or a social context in which infidelity is condoned.” (glass) Even with a non-problematic relationship people can still fall under the pressure of cheating. One factor can include either spouse losing interest. In some certain cases if either a man or women were to be in fight, and they saw an attractive person of the opposite sex there would be a higher chance of either person committing an infidelity. About 30- 60% of married American citizens will cheat on their spouse. A marriage’s outcome only reflects the amount of effort that was put into it; “Some marriages end in a month and others last fifty years because of the partners beliefs about one another’s veracity.” ( “ Lying”) There are 3 main factors that causes people to cheat: lying, lack of communication, and neglection. All three go hand in hand when
Over the years, cheating does not carry the same stigma it used to represent. Because of competition and expectations, students are doing whatever it takes to achieve an A average. There are students who are fighting for scholarships or for the position to be on the top. Also, parents and teachers are the root cause of this matter because they have advocated the idea that high GPAs will lead to more successful futures. As a result, grades have become the main focus for most students,
As college standards increase yearly, students feel greater pressure to succeed. As a result of the rising academic expectations, cheating has become a national issue and most students have admitted to cheating at least once in their educational career. Overloaded with school work, students see cheating as an advantage and step towards academic success. Thus, cheating results from an urgency to do well in school and being overscheduled.
Neil Tyson said, “When students cheat on exams, it’s because our School System values grades more than our Students value learning,” (Tyson, 2013) but who is to blame when teachers are caught cheating? The stress of performing well on standardized-testing is burdening. Performance, along with other factors, led to the Atlantic Public Schools cheating scandal, in which 44 schools altered their students’ scores and damaged their future academic success.
Cheating can be a common routine in a classroom—from copying work on homework to copying answers on a test. “Cheating by teachers and administrators on standardized tests is rare, and not a reason to stop testing America's children” (Standardized Tests). This statement is proved false by the fact that thirty-seven states have been caught cheating by
When asking a student do they think cheating is bad most will say yes and will even admit to cheating.Cheating doesn’t affect many students on a regular day basis until they have been caught red-handed.When it comes to cheating blame automatically goes to the student but what about the adult as well. Some teachers have admitted to seeing student cheat but haven't said anything because it was on homework. Some teachers have even gone to the depth of helping a student cheat on a test. There was a survey that was taken through all of the high schools asking students if they had ever cheated on a test, the results were that there were 64 percent who cheated,58 who plagiarised, and above all 95 percent of them admitted to cheating of some sort.(Academic Integrity Under Statistics paragraph 3 )Students cheat to make it through a semester and to make their parents proud.Students cheat simply because of lack of knowledge, pressure from the adult looking for them to do their best, and last lack of time.
The stress for high test scores has been put on teachers so heavily that teachers have started cheating, reporting false scores and or giving their students answers to the tests. “In the year 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia there were 11 teachers convicted of racketeering” (Armstrong), because they cheated on the standardized tests. These instructors were told that if their class failed to meet a certain requirement on the test they would be punished by having their pay decreased. If the teacher’s classes met or exceeded the requirement then the teachers would be given a raise as a reward for teaching the students the information on the test. The teachers are so worried about their salary that they are willing to cheat on a test. There can be reasonable doubt that the students they gave answers to truly retained or learned any of the information taught to
The article “Moving From Cheating to Academic Honesty” by Eugene Bratek, speaks about cheating and how it is affecting students. It explains that students have learned to cheat to get a higher grade in school, and because of this many students at the top also cheat to stay at the top. Another topic the article spoke of is, that students use copy and paste, cheating by using others ideas and information. I completely agree that students have taken a liking to cheating to get a better score on a test and to get a better grade overall.
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9). Cheating is a personal decision. Some will never cheat matter how bad it is; others will cheat no matter how good it is. Truth is there's no justification for cheating on your spouse.
“ When Students cheat on exams it’s because our school system values grades more than students value learning - Neil Degrasse Tyson.” Cheating in school happens everyday around the world. This can be prevented by getting rid of tests, making class lectures more understable and fun, and also shortening the amount of homework students get.
