The language, poetic pronunciation, a figure of speech such as symbol and irony, and the established subject matter are the most important elements that every good poet needs to write in an effective poem. For the special use of language and the rhythm of lines, I’ve chosen “London, 1802” by William Wordsworth and “Chicago” by Carl Sandburg. In “London, 1802,” poem that was published for the first time in 1807, Wordsworth formed his sonnet with a rhyme pattern that was written in the second person. In “Chicago” poem that was published in 1916, Sandburg admired others through his humorous use of language, unique use of grammar and his interest in poem shape.
The style and the language of “London, 1802,” show how Wordsworth extended the range of his emotions critically by learning to control the syntax while changing his verse forms.
Unlike “Chicago”, “London, 1802” poem is written in Pentameter system where the writer can break words

Sandburg starts with the single word “Laughing!” but the linguistic part is finalized in the next line when it jumps to the long sentence “Laughing the stormy, husky, brawling laughter of Youth, half-naked, sweating, proud to be Hog Butcher, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and Freight Handler to the Nation.” (Sandburg) the sound of the poem captures the feel of the city itself. There's so much going on in Chicago, and we can perceive the writer reviewing it completely into these long lines. The poetic language differs from everyday speech and that “Poets were now writing more for the eye than for the ear.” (What is Poetry)? Not just the meaning of some words or phrases change, but also the thought of poetry changes from the old-style one to the new style one due to the social
Poetry is an art that has been passed down from generation to generation; it acts as a way to express emotion or to show a message to readers. In 2017, it is not as popular as it was in the past as many believe it is a common art left behind in the new era of technology. Although many students may call it it to be boring or something they are not interested in, it does have some relevance in today's world. Poetry can show the reader true emotional perspective, just by reading a single stanza. Today, most people are afraid to show what they are feeling. If just a few words on paper allow an individual to be free, then yes, in 2017 poetry is still relevant. Secondly, formulating poetry requires specific mental skills; skills in showing complex thoughts, using poetic devices, and many more literary techniques. This knowledge is something every student can benefit and grow from as an individual. Some may call it old school, but the benefits of learning poetry will remain relevant for a very long time.
In the romantic era, British authors and poets focused on nature and its influence. Two of those poets, Charlotte Smith and William Wordsworth, wrote many pieces on the beauty of nature and their personal experiences with the beaches of England. In “Far on the sands” and “It is a beauteous evening,” Smith and Wordsworth describe their respective experiences on the shore at sunset. Both authors use structure, theme, allusions, and imagery to effectively convey their perceptions of nature. While the sonnets share a setting and the topics of nature and tranquility, Smith’s has a focus on introspection and Wordsworth’s is centered around religion. These have different focuses which achieve different effects on the reader.
Poetry is about the emotions or feeling of a person. Poetry always follows a rhythm to keep the poem organized. The words used in poetry are always specific whether they are good or bad words. People may decide to write poetry because they can freely choose their own words without caring about the reader’s reaction. Although, Poetry is mostly interesting to read, it can sometimes end up being a shock to the readers.
Poetry has a role in society, not only to serve as part of the aesthetics or of the arts. It also gives us a view of what the society is in the context of when it was written and what the author is trying to express through words. The words as a tool in poetry may seem ordinary when used in ordinary circumstance. Yet, these words can hold more emotion and thought, however brief it was presented.
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by
In the poem Chicago, Sandburg commences his poem by naming various titles such as “Hog Butcher for the World, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads, and the Nation’s Freight Handler”, the speaker has a very boastful tone and venerates Chicago’s achievements during the nineteenth century. The speaker uses the words “stormy, husky, and brawling” to
For many years people have been able to share their feelings and emotions through art, songs, novels, poems, etc. These artists, musicians, authors, and poets have been able to connect with others. For example, poems can be interpreted differently by readers. A poem has the flexibility to relate to anyone who reads it. There are many different types of poems in the sense of structure, which inlucudes the rhyme scheme, stanzas, and lines. With in the structure of the poem the reader may encounter similes, metaphors, alliteration, personification, and paradox along with many other literary terms. These literary terms are what make poetry unique and engaging for readers. Readers are able to ponder the meaning of the poem and the complexity of
Poems are typically written in a distinctive way to convey a specific message to the reader. The words or diction construct a poem by depicting ideas, feelings, setting, and characters. Therefore, a poet must chose his/her words with great care to create the appropriate message and to allow the reader to comprehend the general meaning. Thomas Hardy composed The Man He Killed, a poem demonstrating the effect war has upon soldiers and how war changes friend into a foe. The informal diction used by Hardy adds to the general meaning and impact of the poem. Idiom, specific and concrete words, and rhyming are all combined to form the diction of the poem, which enhance the
POETRY Poetry is a verbal or written expression that radiates from thoughts and emotions that dwell within the heart and mind of a poet. CHANGE STARTS WITH YOU IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE If you want to make a difference in the world you must engage in positive actions, assist others, and display love and compassion towards others. Only then will change generate within you.
Poetry in my opinion is best defined as artistic work that was created to express the thoughts or feelings of a person or poet. Expressing thoughts or feelings through poetry can be used by rhythmic patterns or a type or distinctive style. However, poetry does not always have to rhyme or have a rhythmic pattern. Poetry could just be a list of jotted down words that came off the top of the person’s head.
Poetry is an art style that is used to tell a story about something important about oneself, or something going on in the world. It changes as the world changes, because at one point poetry mainly consisted of poems with a story that had a deeper meaning. Then as time changed poetry took on many new forms, such as hip hop and rap. Poetry, whether it be rap or poems seemed to have a big boost during times of prejudice and racism. Two big poets known as Kendrick Lamar and Maya Angelou during their times have been very successful in bringing light to these situations with their poetry.

Round orbs of yellow light pierce the stale dark air of the garage, as the chain rattles and the huge door creaks and groans while the small engine hums to heave heavy panels up, it reveals the light of day coming in and now the silvery silhouette sits in the middle of the garage, with a stance that looks ready to tackle anything. Approaching the beefy fender the tiny reflective orange dot towards the front, lit up with the rest of the lights. Directly under the broad fender is the rubber wrapped with five symmetrically spaced circles. Slight edging slopes make a symmetrical design around the whole wheel. Directly around the center are five silver bolts. Proceeding down the length of the vehicle we come to the black full side steps with the diamond-stamped design on the top to step up into the cab. Directly above that are the door
My capstone project was to go to Chicago and to see many high quality art in art museum and murals/monuments in public in the city. It was also to study the diverse art culture of Chicago.
Modernist poetry is rather difficult to understand and what is more to analyze as it causes different associations and emotions for each reader. Poems of two famous poets will be analyzed, these are Wallance Stevens’ “Anecdote of Jar” and “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird” and William Carlos Williams’ “The Red Wheelbarrow”.
