Child Labor In America

Child labor in America was a major issue. Back in the 1900’s, children, as young as three years old, worked in factories, mills, on the streets, and even in the coal mines. Earning less than twenty cents an hour, these children were contributing to one-third of their family’s total income. The work conditions, put children in direct contact with danger, had deprived them of a proper education and revoked the child from having a normal childhood. In this summative response I will be discussing Lewis Hines- a photographer who ventured all over the states- and the immaculate photos he took of children working in harsh conditions and how one’s social class can affect one’s life-chances. The availability of these life chances is unevenly distributed; being highly dependent on one's social class. The social class into which one is born has a profound influence on one's entire life. Based on the social stratification system- a system by which society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy- the lower down the system, the lower chance of life to happen. This includes but not limited to; money, education, health opportunities, and overall power. The children who came from past generations of wealthy tend to have more advantages and things handed to them on a silver platter to take in their lifetime whereas children who come from nothing tend to never have anything offered to them other than ways to make money but still never make enough to even be on the same platform as the richer ones. It is known that a child that was working during this time did not have the option to pick their favorite toy and show it off to everyone at school. They didn’t have the option to complain about what they wanted to eat for dinner that night and they most certainly didn’t have the option to go to the playground and goof off with all their friends and try to make it home before the street lights came on. Heck! These kids were just trying to make it home before SUNRISE and at least be able to get some type sleep before their next shift. These kids could not be kids. That is the one major life chance that was robbed from them, the one that will always affect
