Many foster children are facing an increased risk of behavior and mental problems (“Perceived Mental Health, 1). Foster children are vulnerable to neurocognitive delays that can hinder them from developing at the average rate of a child in a permanent home, such as poor memory skills, poor visuospatial process, and small language capacity (Leve, 1). These psychological problems are found in approximately half of the children that are adopted or released from the foster system (Lawrence, 3). How does placing children in foster care affect their mental development and behavior? This study will analyze the psychological effects that children face when they are placed in foster care. This study will follow the phenomenology research design to collect information from the foster children. This design will develop evidence that is based on the personal experiences of the participants that have lived in a foster home or hosted a foster home. Participation observation will be used to analyze the actions and attitudes that foster children encounter throughout their daily lives. …show more content…

If the caretakers are aware and understand the ongoing problems that foster children are face, they will be able to provide support that can assist in their development. According to current studies there are high levels of psychological problems that are present in children that are in the foster care system. Once these issues are understood the number of foster children facing problems could be drastically decreased. The results of this study could contribute to psychology by opening the doors to various treatments and therapies that could be used to improve the development rate.
