Children’s Incarceration Crisis Eve Connor A staggering 200,000 children in the UK, have a parent imprisoned each year. However, one of the most alarming issues is the impact incarceration has on the wellbeing of the child. Children of incarcerated parents are affected in many ways such as: underachieving at school, experiencing conduct and mental health issues, emotional difficulties and, most importantly, the likeliness of carrying on to offend. What can be done to help these innocent victims? How can we prevent this? Many children of incarcerated parents are extremely likely to misbehave in a school environment, due to underlying issues that have been left unanswered. They often question if it was their fault, if they drove them away or if they were simply unwanted and left abandoned. Due to this, many children choose to rebel at school, as they become a target towards other students by venting their anger and frustration from home. They see this as a way of receiving attention or even a little recognition and importance. They are at risk of developing emotional difficulty which can go on to affect their lives in the future. As children of prisoners lack a secure relationship with their parents, they often fail to forge strong relationships with other people when they reach adulthood. During their time at school, they often withdraw, as they fail to interact with other children and distance themselves due to their parent’s imprisonment. They often struggle with emotional behaviours such as anxiety and excessive fear, as they are aware of their parents imprisonment and the fact that their peers could possibly be aware of their
