Choosing Homelessness

In the student center on the Marietta campus, I along with a friend of mine, assisted in making sandwiches for the homeless. I observed and 30 fellow students rally together and make 500 sandwiches. This action will help provide food for many homeless citizens.

Homelessness is a prime concern for numerous countries across the globe, including the most advanced ones. Though the population of homeless people tends to be higher in developing countries, it is still a concern in developed nations. Homelessness is a state where someone lacks regular shelter. The term includes people who do not have a home and sleep on the streets, as well as those whose basic nighttime residence is a homeless shelter or other improvised form of housing. Such people lack the capacity to acquire or maintain sufficient nighttime shelter. Individuals and family units become homeless for many reasons. Assessing these causes can help to mitigate the issue.

Homelessness exists as a prominent issue that plagues society in various ways. It brings about hardship and controversy as individuals struggle to survive on a daily basis. Additionally, this complication tears families apart and ostracizes individuals from a society where they once belonged. A specific problem regarding homelessness consists of lack of interest from bystanders; some of these spectators refuse to even acknowledge homeless individuals sitting at their feet. As homeless people live their lives on street-corners, the more fortunate members of society choose to engulf themselves in their personal problems alone. Displayed by their clothing and accessories, most of these individuals possess the ability to help in some way;

Homelessness seems to constantly trigger debates among our society. It has since caused a complex social problem between U.S. citizens and multiple cities worldwide. Cities across the nation have passed a law that criminalizes the act of feeding the homeless, has restricted simple acts of compassion, and have required the purchase of permits to utilize public areas. According to Robbie Couch,” The outlet reports that, incredibly, at least 33 municipal bans on publicly handing out food have been enacted across the U.S. between January 2013 and April 2014, reflecting a sharp increase in communities with such restrictions…. This past February, Columbia S.C., began requiring groups of 25 people or more to purchase permits allowing them to utilize the city’s parks.” I know many will probably agree and say something along the lines of “By restricting the feeding of the homeless, it would motivate more homeless individual to get off the streets”. Houston Mayor Annise Parker stated, “Making it easier for someone to stay on the street is not humane”. Feeding bans are allowing an increase in chronic hunger, allowing stereotypes that are ill-treating those who are experiencing homelessness and allowing homeless individual’s mental, physical, and emotional health to weaken as time progresses.

Homelessness results from the failure of our system to provide adequate safeguards and economic opportunities to those in society who need them the most. There are no federal benefit programs for those experiencing long-term homelessness until they reach the age of 65—or, in some cases, 62. Federal housing and employment programs for low-income people can be difficult to access for those experiencing homelessness, especially without the support of dedicated and knowledgeable homeless service providers. Short-term interventions provide important relief to individuals and families, but robust, long-term workforce solutions are needed to accomplish the goal of permanently ending homelessness.

When I see someone experiencing homelessness, I questioned what led them to be homelessness. I questioned how come the most of country in the world have people experiencing homelessness. I remembered walking around downtown last summer, I was admiring how beautiful the city of Chicago is with its giant buildings, but when I noticed homeless people sleeping outside those buildings just made me question why people are sleeping outside those buildings. I thought it was just unfair in that purpose.

A Quantitative approach using longitudinal data processing was used to expedite service management and results of accountability for Philadelphia County’s ten-year plan to end homelessness. This process collects sample observations from large populations over a period of time. This electronic process organizes case planning and measures indicator initiative. This allows each community to calculate and evaluate the effectiveness of each program and system-level performance that is rendered to the homeless. Another method used was the HMIS (Homeless Management Information Center), this method which is utilized by HUD gives a full understanding and nature of homelessness in the community. This method helps in creating a resource plan as well as operational program models. This method is often used by social service agencies in Philadelphia and also gives the estimates for homeless in the United States.

Many risk factors face the homeless population one risk factor to explore is Life Shocks and Homelessness. Life shocks can be caused by a child's severe illness, the cost of high rents, and low pay these above mention adverse circumstances can cause a chain reaction to one's household. The adverse life events can set a family up for homelessness. There are a number on reason for homelessness its the loss of income, which makes it difficult to pay rent, mortgage, utilities and buy food to survive. Another factor to consider is a mother or father being incarcerated this will impact the family situation greatly. How much waste is being produced daily in our cities is unnecessary and how many people are homeless is outrageous. There are many ways all of the people in our cities can help but it would be easier if your committee starts the “wave” so to speak. Firstly we need to get rid of abandoned or closed houses.In addition we need to save all good foods that are good but are getting wasted.Last but not least we need to make sure this does not keep happening. I agree with the idea of taking a strong stand against homelessness with help from the government or private organizations.“Homeless people in our cities should be given access to services, such as regular food donations, public restrooms, and camping facilities, because it would improve life

The current social welfare issue that I chose to explore is homelessness within Canada. First, this essay will give a brief description of homelessness. Secondly, it will describe how homelessness relates to some concepts and theories that we learned in this course Introduction to Social Welfare, it will also look at what may have happened to people facing homelessness one hundred years ago, next we will explore a possible solution to this social issue and where this fits within the political ideologies. Finally, I will give a brief explanation on whether social media is an effective tool for bringing about awareness regarding social issues.

Homelessness has seen an increase in Portland even with the 10 year plan to end chronic homelessness being enacted, falling behind the country as a whole in the quest to get the poor and vulnerable indoors. Currently, the nation is nearing its ten year plan to end chronic homelessness, which has resulted in little to no progress. This is quite concerning because a homeless person on the street will cost the city more per year than if the city invested more in guiding the homeless into stable housing. Experts say the main way to end homelessness in Portland is to create much more affordable housing, help train the homeless to be self sufficient, and creating a social safety net to prevent people from falling into homelessness in the first place.

They are bad because it shows we do not care about our own people. As many are mentally ill, it is a reminder of of Ronald Reagan closing all psychiatric facilities. Some are solid alcoholics that need professional care that they can not afford. Try having no money in your pocket or a place to stay for three days to get an idea how difficult it is being homeless. It will also give you a small idea how hard it is to get out of being homeless.

The average age of death for a homeless person is only 47 years young  and  homelessness  has sadly doubled since 2010. As the nights get longer and temperatures drop, staying indoors becomes the place of choice to be... But for our homeless friends and disadvantaged  they dont get the  luxury of choice there only option is to become a survivor of circumstance, and even though sleeping/ camping rough/outdoors is never an easy situation, it becomes more risky and dangerous  and unfortunately it can become fatal more often in the coldest season of the year.

It’s a bitter-cold night with a clear sky and stars glistening as far as the eye can see. A cutting wind blows throw the streets of a dark and dank downtown street lined with the day’s newspapers tossed aside without regard. Dry leaves blow through the gutter making a rustling sound that blends with the scampering of rats pillaging for food. In the doorway of the local druggist he reaches for every newspaper page that blows by to stuff into his shirt, pants, and socks in a feeble attempt to keep the wind and cold at bay. He sits on his knapsack that holds every treasured possession he owns as a buffer from the cold, hard, cement. One bottle. That’s all he needs to warm his insides and settle in for the night. Obtaining that feeling and having it abruptly ripped away from you;when being comfortable is becoming a favorable taste. Coming home in middle school with the power out and water off because the bills were not paid was a scary thought. Pondering the thought of how my college will be paid for if the electricity is out and the water is not running. I assimilated to these changes and made the best of it, brushing my teeth at school and wiping myself down in the nurse's bathroom with wet paper towels; since I was unable to shower at home. I was still able to do my school work and excel in class; until I came home to find the contents
