Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451 as the son of a merchant, most likely into a Christian household. As a teenager, he worked on a merchant ship and gained experience in trading voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. He continued similar jobs at sea until his first voyage into the Atlantic Ocean in 1470, when the French attacked his ship along the Portuguese Coast. Despite his sunken ship, Columbus floated to Lisbon, where he married Felipa Perestrello and had a son. At this time, he also began studies in mathematics, astronomy, and navigation, thus inspiring him to begin formulating his world changing plan. He was loved in Spain because of his discoveries. Later that year he left to sea once again, this time he went to explore more of the Islands in the Caribbean. Columbus and his crew found the Navidad settlement destroyed and everyone was killed. Since the Queen felt slavery was offensive, Columbus created a forced labor policy to rebuild the destroyed settlement. He rebuilt the settlement to find gold and other goods to sell. He found small pieces of gold and sold it, but a lot of the people disliked what he did. Before he returned to Spain, Columbus left his brothers in Hispaniola and explored more of the Caribean thinking it was Islands of China. Columbus’s third voyage led him to finally exploring the mainlands. He discovered the Orinoco River, which is now in Venezuela. The Hispaniola was also falling apart at the time because of the poor leading of his brothers and because people thought they were being deceived by Columbus. The Spanish Crown sent an official to arrest Columbus and took his authority. He returned to Spain to go to the Royal Court, but his charges were later dropped. Columbus lost his ability to be governor of the Indies and for a while, lost his riches from his voyages. Columbus later convinced King Ferdinand to go on another voyage and he promised to bring back a lot of riches. He went on his last voyage ever in 1502 and this time he was traveling along the eastern coast of Central America. He was unsuccessful in finding a route to the Indian Ocean. A brutal storm left them stranded in an island of Cuba. Islanders eventually got tired of their gold obsession and unfair treatment, they decided to starve the Spaniards. Columbus decided to punish the islanders by taking away the moon. On February 29, 1504, There was a lunar eclipse and it startled the islanders, so they made trades with the Spaniards again. The main idea behind the voyage was to find a faster route to the Indies, as well as introduce Christianity and The King and Queen to the new world along with its inhabitants. As said by Columbus “Your Highnesses, as Catholic Christians, and princes who love and promote the holy Christian faith, and are enemies of the doctrine of Mahomet, and of all idolatry and heresy, determined to send me, Christopher Columbus, to the above-mentioned countries of India, to see the said princes, people, and territories, and to learn their disposition and the proper method of converting them to our holy faith; and furthermore directed that I should not proceed by land to the East, as is customary, but by a Westerly route, in which direction we have hitherto no certain evidence that any one has gone.” Like said, it shows that Columbus wished to find a faster route, so Spain could easily be able to obtained traded goods which would produce more profit for the country of Spain. Christopher Columbus is known for being an explorer and is said to have made one of the most important voyages in world history without even wanting to. Something else that is also believed is that he “opened up” the Americas to European nations, which changed the course of American history. Before he went on his voyage though, he was in need of resources. So he asked Portugal, France, Italy among many other countries but they all denied Columbus and thought his statement was incorrect. Columbus’ statement was that he had found a faster way to get to Asia than the Portuguese had, which was going around the continent of Africa. Columbus lived a majority of his life in Spain, so when it came to setting sail for the west, Spain was one of the first nations he asked for funding. Though it took Columbus a little more than a few years to convince a nation to fund his voyage, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand from Spain subsequently granted to endow him in 1492. He would then leave for “Asia” on August 3, 1492. There are many unanswered questions and thoughts on why Spain decided to finally fund Columbus’ voyage, especially since he was an explorer that was born in Italy.

Columbus was born around 1451 in the republic of Genoa (what today would be in Italy). As a teenager, he participated in some trading voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas for a job to earn some money. When Columbus was young, voyages had always fascinated him so he decided to start sailing the seas, hoping he could discover something new. His first voyage to the Atlantic Ocean in 1476 nearly killed him when a group of French privateers attacked Columbus and his crew off the coast of Portugal. So Columbus had to swim all the way to Lisbon where he settled and married Felipa Perestrello. They had a son named Diego in about the year 1480. Columbus’ wife died soon after Columbus went to Spain and then had a second son Fernando who was born out of Wedlock in 1488 with Beatriz Enriquez de Arana. Columbus studied Mathematics, Astronomy, Cartography, and Navigation at Lisbon which is where Columbus would start his quest to finding a new world.

In this find, he gained money, people, land, and respect from the other countries. One of the big things that Columbus got out of this voyage was resources.

Columbus had spent a great time in Spain trying to gain the support of Queen Isabella, so she chose him over a spanish explorer. Christopher Columbus managed to convince a

Columbus’ father was a man by the name of Domenico Columbo, who worked as a wool weaver. Domenico married the daughter of a man in the same trade as he. Her name is Susanna Fontanarossa, and with her Domenico had five children, including Columbus. Columbus had three brothers. Their names are Bartholomew, Giacomo, and Giovanni Pellegrino Columbus.

Columbus first met with the King of Portugal, King John II, to present his idea to go west across the Atlantic Ocean reach Asia. King John II rejected the idea. Columbus from there met with the Spanish Queen and King, King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I. They originally rejected the idea, but after Columbus met with them again they agreed to fund his voyage to the west. Ferdinand and Isabella provided Columbus with three ships, the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer and navigator. He was born in 1451 in Genoa. When he got married he moved to Lisbon. He was stimulated to find gold, god, and the Far East. In 1492, he sailed across the Atlantic ocean hopefully to find an alternative route to Asia in the ships Santa Maria, Nina, and Pinta. He completed four sea voyages from Spain to the Caribbeans and South America.

After Columbus found the new land, he set sail west again in 1493 with 17 ships and 1200 men. With all of that, he found Dominica, Guadeloupe, and Jamaica. Then they headed back to Hispaniola only to find the fort destroyed and his crew killed because they mistreated the indigenous peoples. At the rubble of the fort, Columbus established a colony, called Santo Domingo after a battle in 1495, he conquered the whole island. Then he set sail for Spain in 1496, arriving in Cadiz on July 13.

The ships that were involved in this voyage were The Pinta, The Nina, and the Santa Maria. These ships were coming from Palos. Columbus conducted this trip with the help of his two brothers Martin Alonso Pinzon that was in command of The Pinta. And his other brother who was the youngest of all Vicente Yanez Pinzon he was in charge of the Nina. On October 12th of 1492 Columbus and his brothers made landfall in the morning. Columbus landed at what we now call the Bahamas. But at that time Columbus had named it San Salvador. Columbus met a few of the local people in the Bahamas these people were friendly and Columbus named them to be Indians. A few days later Columbus and his brother moved on to sailing to Cuba. Where there thoughts were to meet with the Mongol emperor of China. Then they moved on in December they sailed east way of Hispaniola. Around Christmas time Santa Maria ended up getting in a wreck in Cap-Haitien. Columbus was lucky enough to get all the men ashore. The people of Cap-Haitien seemed to be very friendly so he let about thirty-nine men stay ashore. Columbus soon returned to Spain on the Nina. Columbus seemed to have good luck with getting to places the winds seemed to be favorable with him. He had no problem going west from the Canaries. Then again sailed north more easts and yet again got good winds along the way. If you really think about going in the ocean and sailing at times it can be really difficult to find favorable winds just so that you can get to where you want to go. Soon after he was traveling he was able to meet up with his brother Martin that was on the Pinta. But not much longer and they were separated because of the winds and the sea. In March of 1493 Columbus landed in what we know now as Libson. John II interviewed Columbus soon as he got to Libson. Soon later Columbus went off to Palos traveled to Spain and Barcelona. Columbus was becoming very discouraged and mad while traveling through the Atlantic. Columbus didn 't “discover” America, he never even touched the ground in North America but he was the first to see it. However during four separate trips Columbus landed on various Caribbean islands that are now the Bahamas as well as the island later called Hispaniola. He also explored the Central and South American coasts.
