The Spangdahlem Air Base men’s and women’s softball teams protected their home fields and both dominated the Cinco De Mayo Softball Championship held here May 4 to 6, 2018. “I talked about it a few weeks ago with the men’s team,” said Staff Sgt. Joe Campbell, Spangdahlem women’s head coach. “We said we’re going to win this championship for both the men and women. It had never been done before so we made it our goal and dedicated ourselves to it.” Both teams experienced and overcame adversity on their way to becoming champs. Just two weeks ago, the men’s team played in a tune-up, or preseason, tournament, winning all their early games only to end up losing two games in a row to Lakenheath, ultimately losing the tune-up. “In the tune-up tournament,
SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies softball team picked up their first win of the season, 4-2, in game one of the doubleheader, but five errors led to four unearned runs by the Wildcats in a 5-1 loss in game two between Centenary (1-5) and Louisiana College (3-1) Tuesday night, February 7.
In the third, freshman Erin Lewis was hit by a pitch and advanced to third after a throwing error allowed junior Cassie Gonzales to reach. After a hit batter loaded the bases, a walk to sophomore Hallie Smith and a squeeze by LeBlanc plated another to put the Ladies up 6-2.
For the fifth time this year the Princess Anne Cavaliers faced off against the Salem Sundevils, but this time it was to see who would advance to the State Championship game. With both teams knowing each other so well the game would depend on who got hot at the right time, and which coach could make that crucial adjustment that would change the scope of the whole game.
Both the Boys and Girls basketball teams have trained intensely to come with many big wins. For both teams, this season was not how they expected it to be due to unfortunate losses. However, they have managed to put through the season with great wins. According to most of our players, the John F. Kennedy (JFK) Knights are the biggest and toughest competitor because “Kennedy is always and probably always will be a tough rival simply because of the fact that most of the players are close friends of mine,” says Xavier Hilbert (Senior). “We've played together and against each other for a long time now so each time we play one another we want to show how much better each of us has gotten.” Overall, this season is something different than our past
Cole Holbrook and Devin Reich stated the reason for their success was just knowing each other which made them play with confidence. Really stressing the fact that playing together last year was so important in building their chemistry. When asked how close the two of them are Devin said “practically brothers.” I asked Cole and Devin what they plan to improve on from now until the state competition they responded with “practicing a lot” and “practicing with other state competitors. When asked about their plan for state Cole responded with “our goal is to make the opponents cry.” The Talon and myself congratulate Ty, Cole, and Devin on their success and wish them the best of luck as they prepare for state in the
Girls varsity softball has began a new season. Led by coach of six years, Mike Quiroz, the tartans are coming off a win, beating San Dimas 17-2.
It is with mixed feelings that I notify you that TyNitra is resigning from the Tomahawks team effective immediately. Although Ty only spent a few months on the team, she really bonded with all of the girls, coaches, and some of the parents on the team. I want to thank you for your role as her coach and mentor. Travel softball on this team was the first "travel" experience for Ty, and she learned the value of hard work, determination, and self-motivation,but in the end, this experience also caused she and I to feel disappointed about a few things. I am very straightforward, so I will be totally honest with you in saying that the last tournament was truly the deciding factor for both of us. I would be remiss not to mention that, whether a
In 2016, more than ever, the team was committed to and had one goal of winning. One of our biggest rivals was St. John’s College High School (SJCHS). My doubles partner and I played the last match of the WCAC championships against SJCHS. During the season, SJCHS was one of the hardest competitors we faced but walking onto the court on the final day of championships, my partner and I knew we would fight and win. After 45 minutes, I hit an ace and we won the match that put us in the lead to win the championships. October 30, 2016 was the single most exciting and overwhelming day for the team all season. Everyone’s hard work paid off.
The morning was exciting, because when I saw my teammates who have been there with me from the beginning for the past three years, I felt pride and confidence of us. After eating, we were on our way to the Ramstein Softball fields to make history. Before every championship game, it has to be narrowed to the final two. In our pool, it was Aviano versus Sigonella. It was not going to be an easy game. We struggled a bit, but the team made it through and won with a score of 13-7. Coach Cadena and Knight had that proud smile, but they knew who we were facing next. They talked to us to set our minds focusing on the next game. We
A struggle or a success for the softball teams? The middle school softball season is now over but their season was a big hit. The coaches and players are exceptionally proud of themselves and their teammates for how well they did together.

Since I was five years old softball and sports have been a huge part of my life. In softball, specifically, there are many times of failure and success. High school sports, for me, has taken a lot of my time, effort, and commitment. From the first day I stepped onto the court and field to the last, I want to be able to say I did my best. It has been tough and frustrating at times. I experienced failure many times, even when I did not want to admit it. My moments of failure within high school sports have turned me into the character and person I am today. It has taught me how to take failure and turn it into success. Failure has made me realize that the only way for you to succeed is for you to fail first.
Imagine coming across a goal that you’ve been wanting to accomplish for a very long time.
The team was ready, we had been working extremely hard for the past seven months for this. We were all in great shape and very rested. A few of the returning players were meeting me at my house to carpool to the final game of the state championship tournament. Everyone knew that the hard work had paid off when we won the semi-final game the preceding day.
I’ve never been one to openly express my feelings. At the age of ten I had realized my heart did not belong on my sleeve, but instead, kept safely tucked away in the back of a drawer. It got to the point where my own grandmother had considered taking me to a shrink. Then along came my freshman year of high school and that’s when the epiphany hit me. Somewhere along the line I had developed a fierce, bone-deep, passion for playing softball.
