The concept of citizen journalism is not a new phenomenon and it has started long time ago. When it comes to journalism, citizen journalism is not any different from what democracy is when it comes to politics and civic life. It allows for the active participation of the citizens in news gathering and reporting. The advancements that have taken place in the field of technology have enabled people to gain an opportunity to become producers of content that they used to be consumers of in the past through the mainstream media. Today, everyone has an opportunity to become a citizen journalist (Allan and Einar 76). There is an array of social media platforms and accounts whose key role is to disseminate information to the public, especially in cases where individuals may feel that conventional journalism would want to shield the public from some information.
