Civil war, four long years of war between the North and South, was fought from 1861 to 1865. The main purpose of the war was to preserve the Union, which later changed to ending slavery. Thousands of people volunteered for this war but everyone had a different belief and goal. The soldiers for this war consisted of a large number of immigrants, women and even African Americans. The union soldiers (northerners) volunteered to fight for the country, they fought the war to defeat the new confederation formed by the southern states. The African American joined the Union soldiers to fight against the confederate who were pro-slavery. After the election of President Lincoln, the southern states refused to stay under the wing of United States of

The Civil War was a great deal about slavery. Slavery was overwhelmingly the cause for example, the "states' right" always mentioned seems to have been the right to have slaves. IMHO. If you wanted to stop the war you needed to stop slavery.
Throughout the annals of American history, the advocation for freedom and the unification of southern and northern societies under the union had been an idealistic hope for America. But, as the new country evolved, with that evolution came division. The deviations that overcame these two factions ultimately led to what we know as the American Civil War. But what were these key differences, and how did they shape the American society before the Civil War? Although many people attribute the this war only to the propagation of slavery within the solitary southern society, there were ultimately other causes, having slavery embedded within the reasoning, that led to the bloodshed of the Civil War, primarily: westward expansion, sectionalism,
“Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.” This quote by Abraham Lincoln boldly signifies the true battle cry for the union. The period following the Civil War was a period of profound change in the South and the North following the end of slavery. For former slaves were in a difficult position following the war they had received their freedom, but not much else. For the freedmen there was a brief belief that freedom would grant them everything that they needed to succeed. They wanted an equality of rights with whites. Frederick Douglass said that “Slavery is not abolished until the black man has the ballot” (Foner 89). African-Americans wanted these rights to guarantee their status as citizens who would not be dominated by their former Confederate neighbors. Former slaves as also wanted land to work on under their own terms. “To the former slaves, the war with
he Civil War was the greatest battle in American History; that lasted from 1861 to 1865. It began after the secession of eleven Southern states from the Union, and their first attack on the government. The basis of this war was primarily over the abolition of Slavery, State rights and the election of president Lincoln. The aftermath has mainly impacted the South as they were the source of the problem. Due to most battles being held in the South, crops were burnt, mills destroyed and houses were demolished. They became in a critical state; without the excess labor that slaves provided, their economy collapsed and they were unable to rebuild themselves. An immense loss of properties was approximately worth 2.5 billion dollars . Additionally estates, factories and

Abraham Lincoln once said to George Robertson “‘Can we, as a nation, continue, together permanently—forever—half slave, and half free?’ The problem is too mighty for me. May God, in his mercy, superintend the solution.” (Hobson, 1912) This he wrote in a private letter in 1855. It was another year before Lincoln felt ready to think about saying the same thing in a way that would be really heard. He made his position clear September 18, 1858, stating “I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races,” going on to say that he opposed blacks having the right to vote, to serve on juries, to hold office and to intermarry with whites. (Mintz, S., & McNeil, 2016) The Civil War in the United States was inevitable. The great sectional differences between North and South were far too great, and the main reason for these differences was the fact that slavery underlay both the southern economy and society. No one, not even Abraham Lincoln could dispute the growing gap between the nation at that time.
