Do you ever think a teacher could be a nurse in a war, and start something to help thousands of people? Well that's what Clara did and she was very successful. She was a nurse for most of the Civil War and sometime after. After the Civil War Clara was caring to look for soldiers who gone missing to reunite with their families. One trip to Europe inspired Clara to start what we know as today the American Red Cross. Clara was always a very helpful woman and never really stopped being helpful and that's what led her to many great achievements.
Even when Clara was young she was still very helpful and intelligent. She was born on December 25,1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts. At age 15 she became a teacher at her own school in New,Jersey.

Clara wrote letters to the families of soldiers who gone missing. She wanted to know more about those who went missing. Also after the war Clara would talk about her war experiences. Clara's doctor told her to take a trip to Europe to rest because her work was getting her very tired. The rest didn't stop Clara from helping people, or making a change. (Pg.1 biography.com)
When Clara went to Europe, she saw a group called the Red Cross and that inspired Clara to start the American Red Cross. In 1870, Clara worked for the International Red Cross during the Franco-Purssion war. In 1881, the American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton also known as the first president of the American Red Cross. When the American Red Cross started it first helped the Johnstown, Pennsylvania flood, and the hurricanes in the Sea Islands in 1893. The American Red Cross was such a help back then, and it still is today.
On April 12,1912 Clara Barton died in her home at Glen Echo, Maryland. Clara was an Intelligent,brave,strong, helpful person. She wrote a book called "The Story of my Childhood it was published in 1907. Clara was known as the "Angel of the Battlefield" for her helpfulness and care in the battlefield. Her parents were Stephan and Sarah Barton, a militia man and a home maker. Stephan was a non-commissioned officer in the French and Indian Wars, which made his soilder habits and tastes hard to dismiss. He had a love for horses and became one of the first to introduce blooded stocks, with large lands in England, he raised his own colts and highlanders. He told Clara many war stories, he even drew maps, made models of battles and explained war strategies.
