College Essay 2015
Clippers
On my 9th Christmas I got a pair of hand pruning clippers in my stocking. The clippers were sturdy and well greased, with orange handles that were slightly too big for my small hands. One day, after school, I grabbed my new clippers and went outside to give them a try. We live in a clearing surrounded by forest. I picked a part of the yard that looked particularly overgrown with thorny blackberry shoots arching ten feet in the air mixed with stinging nettles that had managed to wedge their way through the treacherously thick brambles. My dog Millie had picked up the scent of a rabbit or ground squirrel nearby and was ferociously digging into a pile of rotten logs. I pulled out my shiny new tool and clipped the end of a shoot. I remembered my dad once telling me to cut brush up small so that it would

The brush was now cleared to the forest's edge. A forgotten pile of building material, a rusty old-field mower, Millie’s pile of rotten logs, and a large mound of topsoil lay uncovered. Inspired by what I had accomplished my dad helped me remove the junk, but this was really only the beginning. He then started up his tractor, and I watched as he pushed the rotten logs into a low spot in the woods, and spread the topsoil out over the newly cleared space.
The effect of my work was greater than I could have ever imagined. Looking out at that section of yard now, there is a large garden, many fruit trees, two honeybee hives, and grapes and kiwis growing up the fence, which was built to keep out the deer and rabbits. My little project eventually involved my whole family and even some friends who came out to help.
I’m a bit older now, but I still love to start things. I have the discipline and willpower to keep them going, and to inspire others to get involved. I get great satisfaction from learning new things and completing difficult
For this assignment I choose to attend a Los Angeles Clippers game even though I am a big Lakers fan; mainly because it better fit into my budget and the appeal of watching this young high flying team made it seem like it was going to be a good night. Going into the game it was being dubbed as the “battle of the double-doubles” as the Minnesota Timberwolves led by Kevin Love and his 28 straight double doubles took on Blake Griffin and his 26 straight double doubles.
The sun was glistening through the tall, swaying pines. To the right of the trail, a gentle river flowed softly down towards the mouth of the lake. Walking across the rickety wooden bridge, I inhaled a deep breath of refreshingly crisp mountain air. The sun beat down on me as I made my way across the bridge and back onto the well-used hiking trail. The ambient sounds of chirping birds, babbling water, and the croaks of several frogs filled my ears as I made my way around the bend. As I entered the mouth of the forest, I could see my father standing in the middle of the path, glancing upwards, taking in the beauty that had began to engulf us. “We better get going.” he said, looking back at me. “There’s still many miles to go.” I smiled and turned, taking in one last view of the beautiful creekside. Then, with determination, we set out to finish the challenging trek we had started.
The farmhouses looked terrible - the dust was deposited clear up to the window sills in these farmhouses, clear up to the window sills. And even about half of the front door was blocked by this sand. And if people inside wanted to get out, they had to climb out through the window to get out with a shovel to shovel out the front door. And, ah, there was no longer any yard at all there, not a green sprig, not a living thing of any kind, not even a field mouse. Nothing (qtd. in Press 32).
“There once was a time when it did not rain for a great many months. The Prairie turned brown from the Sun, and the Great River that nurtured the land began to dry up. The Plants struggled against the dry Earth to breathe and grow, while the Animals became weak and could not hunt. All the while the People waited, looking towards the sky and wondering what they had done to bring such misfortune upon themselves. While the People waited, Fear grew. This Fear grew so quickly that in a very short time it began to spread across the entire Prairie, choking out everything and everyone in its path until at last it covered all but one very small place in the Prairie where only the Children and the Old Ones would sit and play together.
Western Conference third and fourth leading teams Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Clipper have tested the waters, as potential playoff showdown with the two ballclubs is fast approaching.
The reciprocity that I felt with my dad in my backyard has now become strong with the backyard itself. Tasks that my dad had once done, now have become mine and through this, I realized the significance of his creation and its impact on my future. It is here that I can relive a simpler time of my life and forget the stress that comes with life.
The short-handed Los Angeles Clippers will be trying overturn their bad lucks when they host the visiting Portland Trail Blazers for the Game 5 of their Western Conference First Round best-of-seven playoff series at the Staples Center on Wednesday evening.
The Los Angeles Clippers have become must see television over the course of a few seasons. The team has been able to shake the irrelevant tag that it normally had when they were the joke of Los Angeles. From the well documented fall out of Donald Sterling, to the controversial acquisition of Chris Paul, the Clippers have arrived.
First came heavy breathing while staring at the sky. Ben noted: “Jenna, just breathe. Darling, breathe in, breathe out.” Jenna and Ben held hands. It’s obvious; she’s anxious; a visible shake jolts her sweaty palms. She glanced over and said: “I got it. I understand.” Ben stuttered, asking: "So – so what do you contemplate their reaction when they find out?" Jen sighs. While sitting on the swing in the frigid early December outside her mother's farmhouse, Jenna rests her tired head on his cold-shoulder; softly, she cries. Her eyes welled with tears; slowly, they trickle about his chest; the chilled tears dripped from his Chicago Bulls sweater to his dirty, ripped jeans: "I don't have a clue. I guess I haven't thought that far
A player on my team grabs the ball. I sprint as fast as I can, I turn back facing the point guard, I nod. She throws the ball with force to me and right as it comes to me so does a player on the other team. Although I catch the ball, it goes straight for the tip of my finger. I wince in pain, my jaw tightens. It's like no one can see my pain. I can’t stop though, I keep running and shoot. As I go up to shoot I notice I can’t move my finger, I miss. I stand still for a split second, noticing my middle finger is as hot as an oven and is starting to swell up. I try motioning to the coach to take me off, but she doesn’t see. 20 minutes pass and the first half is over. As I go and sit down on the side, I look down at my hand, my middle finger is 2x bigger than any of my other fingers.
With the butt chewings and scoldings done, I spent the rest of the day chopping stalks. I first finished the small eighteen-acre piece that caused me so many problems the day before. When I was chopping this field, and still now, today, I always make sure I turn away from the ditch so not to repeat my mistake. I continued where I left off on the “south forty” while Jake used the disk and cultivated everything I had finished ahead of him. Without further incident, I finished the farm that Sunday night, leaving the tractor and flail chopper at the entrance of the field to be moved to the next farm in the morning. Farming certainly has some exciting moments, and an accident is sometimes waiting around the next turn. This causes me to always be thinking about the safety of others and myself while working on the
The red-hot team of Houston Rockets continues to extend their winning run as they beat the Eastern Conference second leading team, the Toronto Raptors, with a 129-122 victory at the Air Canada Centre on Sunday night.
I hurtled over one canine, slid under one, just ran past one (she was sleeping on the job), grabbed the bone, and ran for it.
As I left behind the somber forest, I now recognized an appreciation for nature that I did not realize I had. I now knew there was more to nature than just trees and animals, but also I found the
In the back of my high school, there was a dirt plot, fenced in, covered in weeds, and it was going to concreted over. I walked past the dirt plot and wondered “Why doesn’t anyone do something with it?” I thought about it on the way home from school and I talked to my friends about it. I told them that I wanted to do something with space, we came up with many things to do with the space before but then I realized that we could use the space for a garden. I remembered that I love gardening, when I was young my mom and I would always garden together, we would have the best time harvesting our plants and we bonded so much over our garden.
