Prologue
Moscow, U.S.S.R. 19 September, 2020. Instead of in our world when it collapsed in 1989, the Soviet Union managed to pull through the tough time, but now it couldn’t. Rioters crowded the streets, attempting to penetrate the defenses of the buildings holding state officials. Only the KGB remained loyal to its government, while the U.S.S.R.’s enemies watched smugly, and the Warsaw Pact Nations defected to NATO. A civil war in Cuba ended communism there, and Anti-Communist factions in all nations were at strong points.
3 KGB officers, disguised as civilians, wove their way through the crowds, to the missile complex that could launch every Nuclear Missile in the country, and one of the few buildings in Moscow that was still in communist

N.O.R.A.D. officers immediately got the nuclear defensive missiles airborne. The ICBMs arrived over North, South, and Central America. Then, they exploded in space as the defensive missiles destroyed them. But, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Oceania weren’t so lucky. Nuclear Missiles rained down on them.
“You have permission to fire all Nuclear Weapons at the U.S.S.R.!” screamed the President of the United States over the phone.
ICBMs and other nuclear missiles roared out from their silos, all headed for the U.S.S.R. The Soviet defensive systems were nowhere near as good as those of N.O.R.A.D., as the resulting wasteland showed.
Israel, 12 May, 2022. The Americas, the only land to survive the apocalypse, had merged into one huge country, while out of the ashes of the rest of the world, new civilizations rose, but were much weaker than America.
A team of archaeologists crept down a staircase in an ancient library in what had once been Israel, where rumors told of ancient texts, previously undiscovered. This floor was certainly undiscovered, buried 50 feet underground. They emerged from the staircase, and found themselves in a small room not much bigger than a handful of broom closets. A yellowed piece of paper was rolled up on an ancient

2 tanks led the way, followed by a dozen assorted trucks, followed by 5 trucks holding missiles, then a pair of armored cars, with 3 tanks bringing up the rear.
Bill’s fire, followed in quick succession by Carie’s, riddled several trucks, and the rest of the 12th opened up, several handheld anti-tank weapons included. The leading tanks stopped, on fire, and the trucks served to the sides of the road. Every gun in the convoy opened up, hosing the woods in the ravine, attempting to hit the ambushers. At first, it seemed that the convoy was screwed, and then the rearguard opened up. Shells from the tanks and machine gun fire from all of the vehicles drove the attackers off.
“Fall back! Fall back!” Bill urgently said into his link, trying not to reveal his location, as enemy air support arrived and determined troops charged up the sides of the ravine. “Get the hell back to the rendezvous with the transport, and activate emergency beacons!”
He and Carie crawled away from the edge, and, once safe, sprinted in the direction of the rendezvous, fighting rearguard actions with the enemy troops the whole time. They met up with the rest of the 12th a quarter mile away from the evacuation point, still at full sprint, and hardly out of
The South Korean border patrol got the team as close to the “party” as possible. From there they ran. Sprinting from building to building, slowly making their way through the city before the action. Exhausted already from running with all of their equipment. They finally reached the battle. Anthony, Jones, and Cedar setup in the buildings in case they needed to clear the way, while Aaron, Clay, and John equipped themselves with the necessities to complete the mission and prepared themselves. They would wait about an hour until it got dark, then they would move
With the U.S now embarrassed by a failed invasion in Cuba, Fidel and Nikita Khrushchev allied forces. As a means to establish a level playing field during the Cold War, Khrushchev agreed to send arms and military support to Cuba. The arms would include nuclear warheads capable of inflicting immense damage to much of the United States. This plight would reestablish Russian dominance within the Cold War and deter further violence from U.S to Cuba. Under near complete secrecy, Khrushchev was able to move many SS-4 ballistic missiles and establish nuclear warhead sites across Cuba. Using high-resolution reconnaissance aircraft, American spy planes documented several areas of significance. These areas would be studied intensely over the next few

The heavy artillery would harass the incoming flights, and the medium and light artillery would concentrate on the lead aircraft as the American planes approached their target. The Cuban Missile Crisis was one of the Cold war's most dangerous crisis's. So, in 1962 mid-October an American spy plane spotted launch sites for Soviet nukes. The nukes were located to where they could reach the U.S.
In the spring of 1962, Khrushchev saw this prime opportunity to advance on the United States. He began forming a plan to move nuclear missiles to Cuba and set have them operational. The United States would not allow this to take place if they had known of the plans, but the Soviets had the means to conceal their true intentions. Soviets also were masters of denial and deception. They would use a technique called maskirovka, it was highly successful for years, and it would prove to be a great asset. Instead of just trying to mislead their enemies, the Soviets mislead everyone but a few need to know personnel. Their civilians and even members of their military forces were not aware of their governments plan to move the missiles to Cuba. The Soviets executed their plan all but seamlessly. The United States were not as sharp with their techniques to detect an operation such as this. Before notice of the missiles the CIA’s estimates office produced a total of four National Intelligence Estimates (nies) and Special National Intelligence Estimates (snies) about Castro’s communist regime, its relationship with the Soviet Bloc, its activities in spreading communism throughout Latin America, and potential threats to the United States (Zegart, 2012). General Gribkov stated that “US intelligence discovered neither the true significance of the surge in Soviet shipping to Cuba nor the mission of our troops on the island until nearly all the men had come ashore and , still moving in large numbers only by night, had been deployed to their assigned positions” (Hansen, 2007). US intelligence officials discovered the missiles in Cuba days before they became operational. Furthermore, Cuba is 145 kilometers from the closest US shore. The Soviet’s capabilities of just their medium-range missile had a range of up to 2500 kilometers. It is safe to say that this would have changed the world as we know
President John F. Kennedy did not reveal any previous knowledge of the missiles presence at this time. Initially, the National Security Council thought it would be best to invade and perform a full-scale attack on Cuba, but in doing so the Soviets would retaliate with nuclear war (Hershberg). After deliberation with the president and his advisors, their plan of action was to “quarantine” Cuba and surrounding the island with military ships to turn away any incoming shipments from the Soviets (“Cuban Missile Crisis”). On October 22nd, 1962 in an address to the American people, President John F. Kennedy publicly confirmed that the Soviet Union had initiated nuclear build up on Cuba and identified that the “purpose of these bases can be none other than to provide a nuclear strike capability against the Western Hemisphere” (Kennedy). For 13 days, President Kennedy and Chairman Khrushchev of the Soviet Union went back and forth through letters addressing the issue at hand and how each country would be forced to handle any threats compromising their well being. The near nuclear disaster ended with a collective understanding between Kennedy and Khrushchev that the Soviets would remove the nuclear missiles, while the United States would not invade Cuba and also silently remove their missiles in Turkey (“The World on the Brink”).
“Oh let go of it Jonesy, it’s not gonna bring him back.” Mark retorted with a stern voice. Jack had reached the hanger of Squadron No. 2 where he noticed four men. two men were by a plane holding wrenches while the other two were sitting at a small table, one of them holding a briefing file. The man holding the folder noticed Jack approach, “Oh ok, so command thinks it’s funny to send us a child do they?” Jones exclaimed at the sight of the new member standing at the hanger doors.
On October fourth, 1957, Russia launches the satellite Sputnik. Suspicions were high in the United States during the cold war and, the launching of Sputnik, raised them even higher. There was always the lingering threat of a nuclear attack, that had everyone on edge. Preparing shelters and running drills became the norm of a once confidant, nation. Espionage was also on the rise between the two nations. It shouldn’t be a surprise that The United States, saw the launching of Sputnik as a nefarious event, to say
By contrast, Nikita Khrushchev gave Castro a warm welcome in the USSR, which further worried the White House. Khrushchev knew that the USA had nuclear weapons based in Italy and Turkey aimed at targets in the USSR. He felt that this provided justification for the USSR to also place its nuclear missiles abroad. In the summer of 1962, Khrushchev personally issued an order for Soviet missiles to be shipped to the island of Cuba. Americans voiced their concerns about Soviet military activity in Cuba. In October 1962, an American U2 spy plane took a series of photographs over Cuba. The photos revealed a nuclear missile site being built by the Soviets. Every major American city was within range of nuclear missiles launched from Cuba. Kennedy’s response to Soviet actions brought the world the closest it had ever been to the point of nuclear war.
The Soviets also had an issue by keeping the operation a complete secret where the Operation Anadyr wouldn’t be detected, and had it, would have placed a fully operational Soviet Military Installation within the shores of the United States. Aleksandr Fursenko and Timothy Naftali give a telling account of the Soviet leadership and the view from the enemy side. What also had caused a great issue for the soviets was the inability for the KGB to provide intelligence from the inner workings of the Executive committee for President Kennedy. Steven Zaloga presents actual workings and operational technique in order to ensure that the shipping of equipment remained undetected for the most part and more importantly, the ability of the Soviets to compartmentalize the activity to limit detection.
In October of 1962, American planes flying over Cuba discovered that The Soviet Union were building launching sites for nuclear missiles. If the missiles were launched from that location, they could reach the United States in a matter of minutes, which caused America to become very suspicious and concerned. It was because of this that the world was right around the corner of being in the most destructive war in the history of the world, a nuclear war. This was given the name of “The Cuban Missile Crisis” and had a major impact on the relationship between the U.S. and the Soviet Union and the Cold War as a whole. This was the trigger to the world be closer than it has ever been to complete nuclear destruction.
Soviet general, Anatoly Gribkov recalled that during the Cuban Missile Crisis “Nuclear catastrophe was hanging by a thread and we weren’t counting days or hours, but minutes”. (5) The thirteen days of the Cuban Missile Crisis were one of the most dangerous and terrifying days in history. The Cuban Missile Crisis was a political and military standoff between the Soviet Union and the United States and is considered the closest moment the Cold War came to escalating into a fatal nuclear war. (1) During the incident, the leader of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev and the president of the U.S., John F Kennedy had the power to destroy half of the countries in the world. (5) The crisis resulted from the huge tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet
Shortly after midnight, the bunkers computers reported that one intercontinental ballistic missile was heading toward the Soviet Union from the US. Petrov considered the detection of the missile a computer error, since a nuclear attack by the US would most likely involve hundreds of missile launches, disabling the Soviet’s means of a counterattack. He dismissed the warning as a false alarm. Petrov decided not to inform his superiors of the alarm at the time.
In actuality, they were the first country to utilize nuclear weapons in combat. It all began with the research to develop those nuclear weapons during World War II, in a top-secret project labeled the Manhattan Project. Not much is known about the project itself, but it is known that it was “authorized by President Roosevelt in the summer of 1942, and the bomb project was placed under military control and commanded by General Leslie R. Groves” (Kraft). The sole purpose of the Manhattan Project was to research the effects of nuclear radiation and establish the possession of nuclear weapons. When considering the condition the world was in at the time of World War II, it was not the best decision if viewed from a long-term standpoint. To rephrase, the world at the time was already filled with chaos. For instance, the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Holocaust already had many of the nations in fear. The last thing that the long list of security threats needed was an impending nuclear
