Cold War During World War II the Soviet Union and the United States had fought together against the Axis powers. The Americans had been concerned about the Russian leader Joseph Stalin’s tyrannical blood thirst to rule his own country. The Cold War was to dominate the international affairs and many major crisis that had occurred like the spreading of` Communist, Iron Curtain, The Marshall Plan, NATO, the Warsaw Pact, the Vietnam War, and the Berlin Wall. The different beliefs and ideology of capitalism versus communism formed an international power struggle of both sides competing dominance seeing every opportunity of expansion anywhere else in the world. The Western nations and the foreign minister of 12 countries gathered in Washington D.C. to sign the North Atlantic Treaty. It was more of a security pact with Article 5 stating that if a military attack against any of the signatures would have to be consider an attack against them all. The original membership of NATO was Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the United States. The temporarily divided along the 17th parallel into the Communist North Vietnam and the anti-communist South Vietnam. To support the Souths government 2,000 military advisors were sent to Vietnam. The first United States combat troop were exceeded 200,000 troops and had peaked 540,000 in 1968. In 1969 President Richard Nixon proposed the called Vietnamization which gave South Vietnam forces to a greater responsibility in fighting the war while still receiving American aid and also gave air and naval support if required. By 1970s the war had escalated in Vietnam Nixon had tried to destroy Viet Cong’s supply bases to the south in Laos and Cambodia. But it had only provoked tremendous anti-war protest in the United Stated and everywhere else. In January 1973 the Paris Peace Accord that was signed establishing a ceasefire and allowing prisoners of war in exchange following United States force withdrawal from Vietnam. The accord officially ended the United Stated and the allies’ direct involvement in Vietnam. On August 1 1961 the communist government of the German Democratic Republic had begun to build a wall of concrete between East and West of Berlin.
