Cold War: The Vietnam War

During the Vietnam War, United States involvement was for personal reasons and fear of communism. Neither the United States or the Soviet Union should have been involved. The War was just used as a cover up for the actual silent, passive aggressive war between the United States and the Soviet. The Vietnam war was started by the North “Viet Cong” and their desire to unify Vietnam under communist rule. The South was against communism, making tensions grow until eventually, a war broke out on November 1, 1955. Five years later in the 1960s, the war was escalated with the involvement of foreign countries. While the North was supported by its communist allies such as China and the Soviet Union. The South was supported by the United States of America. The Americans wanted to halt or prolong the spread of communism. The “domino theory” compelled the U.S. to get involved as soon as possible because if not, the rest of Asia would fall to communism like “dominoes”. The U.S. involvement only started with Eisenhower administration when Vietnam split in half. This action of the United States was only for their own well being and their main goal was not for the good of Vietnam. During this time period the Vietnamese had just united and established the state of Vietnam. The war ended up lasting 9 years with long periods of bitter guerrilla warfare in the rugged jungles of Vietnam which would eventually result in the victory of the North and longed unification of Vietnam

In 1949 the US formed a mutual defense alliance with Western Europe called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Truman had a hard time convincing Congress that this organization was necessary on account of American sentiment previously being avoidant of entangling alliances. The NATO charter pledged that an attack on one of the member nations constituted an attack on all of the members. Stalin’s aggressive actions at Berlin accelerated the American effort to use military means to contain communism. So the implementation of this alliance represented Truman’s willingness to disregard the tradition of neutrality. The Soviets also create an alliance called the Warsaw Pact countries that had the equivalent ambitions as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Consisting of 44 years of violence and civil unrest from 1947 to 1991, the Cold War was a huge turning-point in history. The Cold War however was a war of avoidance, not combat. Defence systems were heavily funded as deterrence to actual war, the belief being a risk of mutual annihilation would be too great to be the side to make the first move. However, the Cold War caused a large variety of conflict and civil unrest around the world, such as the Korean War, Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The War split the world into supporting either the United States, or the USSR (Soviet Union). Both superpowers were associated with two very different political systems; Capitalism and Communism. As World War II came to a close, a new conflict arose among the two superpowers, Soviet Union and the United States. This conflict, known as the Cold War, affected nearly every country in the world, including Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Countries was divided between communist and non-communist countries, which caused tension, political unrest, and monetary difficulties. The Cold War was a war of words and thoughts and it was the timeframe after World War II that led to political and military tensions between democratic United States and communist Soviet Union.

Nixon presidency the United States decided to bring forth the “Vietnamization” policy. A strategy that pledge to strengthen the South Vietnamese military by training them and eventually reducing the United States combat troops until complete withdrawal. Nixon believed this negotiation would give the give them “a better, shorter path to peace”. Although, the United States had cut all military supplies and funding to South Vietnam resulting in a lack of funds to buy equipments such as bullet, bombs, rockets, weapons etc.. In addition the gradual removal of troops made matters worse. It left South Vietnam without the proper equipments and trained troops to succeed. Right after the end of World War II with the Allied forces rejoicing over a marginal victory over Germany, a new and different kind of war was brewing over the tensions of the Western and Eastern blocs, a kind that wouldn’t be fought on the battlefield. The Cold War began in the year of 1945 and lasted all the way until 1991. A cause of the Cold War was the tension between two former allies of World War II, the United States of America and the Soviet Union (also known as the USSR, which stood for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). Since World War II, Conflicts in Asia have played a major role in the Cold War and American foreign policy. One conflict was the Vietnam War, the effects of this conflict were not only felt within the region of Southeast Asia, for example Norman Morrison was a Baltimore Quaker and performed the act of self-immolation at the age of 31 to protest the US’s involvement in Vietnam, this is an example of how it was felt even in the United States and not just in Vietnam. These repercussions had a great impact on American society and even our foreign policy.

For a while there was really only one scene, the main scene. In some eyes, society had a way prior to the 60 's to fixate only on what certain people thought were appropriate. Aspects such as the masculinity of America, white prowess, and the professional look, in a sense plagued America and beyond. Also, the United State 's government was war hungry, after WW2 we put ourselves in conflicts: the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Cold War. These were truly scary times for the people. Fast forward to the 70 's, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War is still taking a toll on our country. Everyone was sick of this and the youth did not want a fight for simply just adding toll numbers to death. This influenced culture immensely and while this was all happening a new breed of ideas were brewing. A new wave of substances became obtainable and people took a hold of these which as we now know changed the face of that generation of people and further rippling out to others. The psychedelia wave arrived and forever society norms changed, how people treated people changed, and Rock & Roll changed at a time that was screaming for change. In the beginning there was LSD, the influence of this drug can be seen in many forms. Mainly LSD had the altering effect that can be seen, but, many other drugs had its place among the groups of people. The LSD influences can be seen in music videos, can be listen to in music, and the idea of hippies was sure shaped my LSD.

The Vietnam War or Second Indochina War started November 1, 1955, and ended April 30, 1975. During the Vietnam War, there were multiple countries that were involved at some point. The main countries involved in the war were North Vietnam, supported by the Soviet Union, China, Viet Cong, and other communist allies. Southern Vietnam was allied with the United States and other anti-communist allies. Many people don’t know how Vietnam relates to the Cold War or that it even relates to the Cold War. The Vietnam War relates to the Cold War because they were both fought about communism. The Cold War was not really a war. In fact it was called the “Cold” war because there was no fighting going on, just almost 45 years of hostilities between the United States and its allies, and the United Soviet Socialist Republic (U.S.S.R.) and the communist countries. It became a symbol of the differences between democracy and communism, and kept most of the world in fear. That was until the Berlin Wall came tumbling down in 1991.

The Cold War got its name because there was no actual-armed conflict between the Soviets and the Americans. There was no "hot" war. During this period of history, the United States and the Soviet Union's armed forces never met on the battlefield. The two countries were constantly responding to each other's actions though. This included spying, a military arms competition, industrial and technological developments, and even a race to the moon. Both countries spent vast amounts of money on defense, nuclear arms, and support of third-party wars.

Suspicion between the two superpowers America and the Soviet Union lead to tension which turned into what is known as the Cold War. During this time espionage also known as spying was used regularly by both the Soviet Union and The United States. The Berlin wall was built in 1961, but it was not just one wall, it was three generations of a structure. It had been 16 years after the end of world war two, Berlin had been divided into two parts, east and west. The east was controlled by the German Democratic Republic and the west was controlled by the Federal Republic of Germany. The west was the side of Berlin that has Capitalism and Democracy while the east side was the side with Communism. This essay is going to answer the question as to why did the Berlin wall get built in 1961, and the three reasons of why are because of emigration, fascism, and communism.
