“ Always do your very best!” This is the theme that inspired Colin Powell throughout his life. He learned to live this mantra from determination, living conditions and his parents. Colin Powell has a lot of determination in him to get to where he is today, he was the first African American to serve as the Secretary of State. As he says in the story, “ I work hard to accomplish the tasks they set as quickly and decisively as I could.” He was determined to help others and to get at a successfull point in life, like he wanted as a kid. As a kid Colin didn't have the best living conditions. His family was very not wealthy so his parents worked hard to get the bills payed and take care of Colin. His neighbors had to watch him sometimes because
"If you fall behind, run faster. Never give up, never surrender, and rise up against all odds." That’s Jesse Jackson at one of his speeches in 1984, he went against all odds himself, overcame the risks and proved to America that color didn’t matter making him one of the most influential characters in American history. Jacksons rough childhood, bravery, and human rights activism is what I think it took to get the courage to do something as big and selfless as Jackson brought himself to do.
A great leader who I admire is Colin Powell. He was born on April 5th, 1937 to immigrant parents, Luther and Maud Powell, from Jamaica. He was raised in the south Bronx and graduated from Morris High School in 1954. While studying geology at a community college he decided to join into the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. He graduated from the program in 1958 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He married his wife, Alma Vivian Johnson in 1962 and they have three children together.
General Colin Powell did the Commencement speech at Howard University on May 25, 1994. He did the speech after a cloud of controversy had happen at the university. A racist Black Muslim made a speech at Howard University. Howard policy is that anybody can express his or her freedom of speech on there campus. As you can figure out, the white community did not think of that very well. Connie Chung did a report saying that Howard University was a racist institution. All of this pressure was coming down at once. Howard said that they did not agree with the Black Muslims beliefs but will let them speak and express their opinions.
Colin Powell had a lot of choices and achievements in life were some of the choices good or bad? He had made some good choices like going to college and some of the choices he had made were not so good. But not just did he have good choices he also had achievements like overcoming a lot of injuries from the army or like being a four-star general in the army

When the racial problems didn’t seem to disappear he didn’t give up and always have the self-confident, even being black to demonstrate his position.
The General did not excel or apply himself in school. As a teen, he was sent home from summer camp for leaving the camp are and having a beer. He was sent home for the stunt, but was later found out from one of the Priest, that he had owned up to the mistake. He had taken responsibility; this is a leadership trait that he took through his long years of Military life, along with his tenure in the diplomatic world.
The first African American to be the U.S. Secretary of State was Colin Powell. Powell was born on April 5, 1937 in New York. The high school that Colin Powell went to was Morris High School in New York. Colin studied geology and that’s when he found his passion. He was in the Reserved Officers Training Corps, later he became a commander of a unit. This is what led him to his experience on a military career and gave him direction of his life. After Colin’s graduation in 1958, he became a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was wounded by a punji- stick booby trap while patrolling the Vietnam border in Laos. Also during a tour he was injured in a helicopter crash. Even though of his injuries he still managed to rescue his comrades from a burning
One of the main conventions in the film is family history. From the beginning, Colin is instantly respected by Costello because he comes from a good family “You Johnny Sullivan’s kid?... You
He meets Colin after collin had been mugged and helped him. When he met Colin and falls in love with him knowing that they both have AIDS. He knows that means there is not much hope for them to have a future. He is a really selfless person in the movie rent. He will share his money with people in the same neighborhood that needed it. He had AIDS. He still lived life the best he can and does not let the fact he has AIDS get to him. When ever he smiled it would light up a whole room and make people's day. When he died it was a really sad part of the movie.
Prior to reading these four chapters of It Worked for Me, I knew very little about the life of Colin Powell. I knew his name and heard it often throughout Black History Month, but reading an excerpt of this memoir granted me access to rather admirable part of his character. Colin Powell is a true leader with a great deal of understanding between both military experience and his reign as Secretary of State. This book shares what he has learned during his time of power and teaches its readers his best tips on how to
Colin spends most of his time wanting to be special, extraordinary and memorable, but by the end, he feels "not-unique in the very best possible way". When Colin was 2 years old his parents discovered he was able to read. This lead to him participating
He work hard to become the sole bread winner for his family, even though the father was there, he still was the main person that everyone in his family depended on.
A lifetime of service to his country, Colin Powell had become a national hero right before our eyes. He was selected as the only African American Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff
In 1964, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent path to resist oppression against the Black. He was totally against violence and using force, he thought they were weakness not courage and wrong not right. He believed in a higher and more humane purpose which is addressing the mindsets of people. He thought that the real social change would come from changing people’s way of thinking to be positive instead of holding all the negative thoughts and hard feels inside our minds and hearts. He had a strong belief that the right path people should follow to resist all kinds of oppression is to work hard, prove themselves and spread peace among them. And his dream was to witness a world where everyone is equal. He wrote a speech about that under the name of ‘I have a dream’. It is about his dream of a better America where black and white are even. He dreamed of oppression transforming into freedom and justice. He dreamed of a better future.
