The Reaction of Colin Powell's Speech at Howard University Essay

Most people recognize Colin Powell as one of the most admired and popular leaders of our time. Often times in leadership you will not always be popular or admired, so what makes this leader different? It was those core values ingrained in him at early age by his parents that would shape him as a future leader (Koltz & Powell, 2012). As with any great leader he’s had his fair share of trials and tribulations, but like an infantry officer he continued to press forward. Colin Powell has been a visionary and ethical leader since the early days of Persian Gulf to Washington’s corridors (Roth, 1993). Throughout my research he has become a personal inspiration for me due to his ability to inspire and motivate those around him. Let’s take a brief look into his background to provide a better understanding of his leadership style.

The most interesting parts of Obama’s speech, to me, were the clarifications on his educational policies. His plans for higher education, such as halting student loan payments after 20 years or 10 years for public servants, seemed pretty cool to me. I’m not sure if taking government money to be used for student loans and giving it to parents while simultaneously stopping loan payments after 20 years is such a good idea. Pissing off the entire banking system might not be such a good idea in the long run. Grunts will be fired before CEOs cut their own bonuses, and I really don’t feel like that is particularly conducive to a good financial system.

Following the 9/11 attack in America, Bush declares Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda as the enemy. Bush clearly states that the 9/11 attacks were an initiative action of war and coins the term, “War on Terror” which has developed and is also adaptable with other terms, such as “War on Drugs”. His speech also educates his people about Islamic terrorism alongside their practices and mentality. Bush seems extremely patriotic and expresses great anger and almost thinks for his citizens by saying, “our grief has turned to anger”. Nonetheless, Bush feels strongly about defending America’s freedom and won’t back down to this violence. Furthermore, Bush’s speech was extremely effective as the crowd was very dense, actively involved through cheers and claps. This however, may have induces a mob mentality as an individual action of support such as a cheer could easily ripple through the crowd and suddenly everyone

On November 27, 1963 Lyndon Baines Johnson delivered a speech. This was just five days after president John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald. Johnson, being the new president of the United States, explained what a great loss fellow Americans had just encountered. His purpose of this speech was to inspire the nation and support them in a time of grief. He also wanted to give the nation hope, in that they would work to meet JFK’s visions.

Colin Powell had a lot of choices and achievements in life were some of the choices good or bad? He had made some good choices like going to college and some of the choices he had made were not so good. But not just did he have good choices he also had achievements like overcoming a lot of injuries from the army or like being a four-star general in the army

Equal rights was what Lyndon B. Johnson spoke of in his letter to the speaker, the president and members of Congress. Along with his powerful message on equality, with his letter, came excellent rhetorical strategies that worked wonders when it came to captivating the reader. The way his first-person point of view explained his overall opinion on the subject could be capable of persuading his readers to feel the same way he once did. In addition to point of view, his use of process analysis may seem subtle to some , however, in reality, it is used perfectly as to subconsciously invade the reader’s thoughts. Lastly, the author’s style plays an important part in his literature because it separates his work from ny other.

On July 18, 1969, Senator Edward Kennedy found himself fighting to escape from a car that had been driven off a bridge and into a pond. Along with him was Miss Mary Jo Kopechne, a campaign secretary for the deceased Senator Robert Kennedy. Even though the senator escaped, Miss Kopechne did not have the same, fortunate fate. At this moment, Kennedy fought to escape the clutches of drowning, however, seven days later, he faced another precarious situation in which he was fighting to escape the clutches of the Massachusetts people. The March on Washington was for Jobs and Freedom. It  took place in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963. There was about 250,000 people total  in attendance. The March on Washington was the largest demonstration ever seen in the nation's capital. It was also the first to have a lot  of live television coverage. Dr.King uses the bible to connect the audience by saying, "The glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.” This shows his very strong belief in that all people will stand together and unite one day. Dr.King uses many compariosons throughout his speech and he refers a hypothetical "check" in which the American people should cash. Dr.King is referring to the Emancipation Proclamation as a "check" in which was written to Americans that should be "cashed".

The General did not excel or apply himself in school. As a teen, he was sent home from summer camp for leaving the camp are and having a beer. He was sent home for the stunt, but was later found out from one of the Priest, that he had owned up to the mistake. He had taken responsibility; this is a leadership trait that he took through his long years of Military life, along with his tenure in the diplomatic world.

John F. Kennedy was elected during the Cold War which was fought between the United States and the Soviet Union. Citizens of the United States needed a leader while communism was spreading and dangerous weapons were being manufactured. Kennedy’s inaugural address was delivered on January 20th, 1961 in Washington, D.C. Kennedy envisioned bringing peace with other countries and uniting democratic countries to conquer communism. He dreams of bringing enemies together and creating a global alliance. Kennedy provides appeal to patriotism, appeal to religion, parallelism and antithesis to express unity and peace.

As a tax paying American citizen, I expect nothing but the best from our Police officer. The ability of the officer to protect my family while away at work, or out of town. Police Officers are task to up hold the law, but also entrusted to make the right decision. One story that caught my attention was a story about a famous football player, who played for the Houston Texans, by the name Ryan Moats. Moats was rushing to the hospital with his wife to see his dying mother and law. Moats was pulled over for driving reckless and the Officer Powell drew his gun on him. The nurse and Doctor came out to let the officer know what was going on but the Officer Powell did not listen. Officer Powell wrote Moats a ticket and during the process his wife’s mother passed away. Officer Powell used Deontology reasoning.

As a Non Commissioned Officer in the Pennsylvania Army Nation Guard, I realize the importance and value of good leadership. A leader has to be able to understand and support their men, have initiative, be quick on their feet, and accept responsibility for their actions. The personal traits that I look for in a leader are courage, commitment, candor, competence, and integrity. Out of these the most important one to me, is integrity. A man’s word is his bond and the most important leadership trait there is. Looking back, the man I see as a great leader that possesses these traits is Ret. General Colin Powell. Transformational leadership describes a leader moving followers beyond immediate self-interests through idealized influence (charisma), inspiration motivation, intellectual stimulation, or individualized consideration. Transformational leaders are change agents. They influence the mission and objectives to make way for a brighter future for the organization. Followers are motivated to do more than is originally expected because of their feelings of trust and respect for the leader.

On April 8, 2013, President Barack Obama spoke at the University of Hartford on behalf of those who died in the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut. President Obama addressed the people of the state of Connecticut and on a federal level. The broadcasting networks provided live coverage of President Obama’s speech, and a national audience listened as the president’s addressing the issues and the next steps forward for the country. The impact of this tragedy and previous massive shootings and Obama’s explanation have been a subject of a controversial debate. I plan on using the pentadic method to analyze President Obama’s speech regarding Sandy Hook and gun control. What we can learn about the method by
