College Admissions Essay: Underestimate The Power Of Education

When I reached my senior year and submitted college applications for the first time I was hopeful that I would be able to reach my goal of going away to college. However, the schools to which I was admitted offered financial aid only in the form of parental loans which my parents cannot afford. I understand their predicament as they approach the age of retirement with little to their names. I decided to attend my current university because I could afford the tuition using financial aid and student loans given that I continued living at home.

“You don’t have to be a genius or a visionary or even a college graduate to be successful. You just need a framework and a dream” (Michael Dell).College education prices are not worth it. College does not land you a good paying job, you end up in deep debt, and it is not worth it for low-income families. College prices are not worth it. Why, because of the rises cost of tuition and the lack of public school preparation.

Deciding to pursue a degree was an easy decision because I didn’t choose to further my education for normal reasons. My two reasons on why I went back to school are because of competition and pride. The first being competition comes from the fact that I’m one of twelve children. Sibling rivalry is a very real thing and competing against eleven other individuals to show how you fit in the food chain is difficult. Only three of my siblings have completed their college education two of them graduating with a master in their fields as well as having 3.5 or higher GPA. As for the other sibling, she recently graduated with her bachelors with 3.9 and has been recently accepted into her master’s program. I’m one of three who is currently going to college

I am writing to you in regards to the blog you posted “The Case Against College Education.” You mentioned, “It is absurd that people have to get college degrees to be considered for good jobs in hotel management or accounting…” It is crucial for an individual to acquire a college degree, however, the American education system is unfair. By attending a college, students have a higher chance of economic success in the future and undergo opportunities to explore a wide variety of possible paths. There are various ways to get a college degree but in the end, there needs to be a lot of reform around education. The question remains, should we help more kids go to college or make it easier for people who did not attend college.

I am a first-generation college student. My parents never got passed high school. They were both faced with hardship and had no choice but to get a job to deal with the responsibilities of home. My dad left India at the age of 16 to build a better life for himself and my mom in America. In my household, education has always been a priority. After high school, many students make the decision on attending college based off of the things their parents/ teachers may have taught them when they were young. Students from all over the United States are told all through their life that they need to attend college if they ever want to be successful, however, this is far from the truth. Often schools are culprits for driving students to attend money driven colleges, in other cases it is family. While schools all too often make the push on students to continue their schooling, parents can cause the same situation, as they may not have a degree and be working a low-paying factory job. College is a chance to further the education of most teens and adults in the modern world. Many people have the choice to enter college after high school or go later in their lives. Both of my parents made separate choices but both turned out to be very successful in their lives. College is a really tough decisions that could be beneficial in most cases because you do happen to get paid more money with a college degree. Coming from a town where many people do not care about education or do not ever leave, college gave me a chance to further find myself. I have known since I was younger that I loved sports and wanted to work in the medical field. I loved watching and playing sports, and even discussing the statistics and records. Parents, whether they're ready to go, financial aid, career choices, or to simply just get away, are all things that can influence a persons choice to go to college. Take parents for example, some of our parents may or may not have gone to college. For those parents who have, they would want to push their kids to be like them. For those who haven't, they would want to push their kids to be better than they were, to have a better education, and ultimately, a better job to take care of their own kids someday. They sometimes put too much pressure on their kids to go to college that their kids feel like that's their only option.

From a young age the importance of education has always been stressed to me. Graduating high school, and then continuing to a university, and earning my degree, was not a question, but a requirement in my household. Being the youngest of six children, and two hardworking middle class parents, I knew from a young age to accomplish and reach the goals set not only by myself but my parents, I would have work extremely hard. A signification person that has impacted my journey has been my mom, whose influence has helped me get to where I am today.
