This week has started off well. I was able to attend a college fair with the students and not only support the students in locating and speaking to colleges that they were interested in, but I was also able to network with many college admissions counselors and gather information that I can take back to other students that were unable to attend the college fair. I think that opportunities like this are important for our students because many of them are from low-income backgrounds and being out in Hawaii, think that going to a college on the mainland is out of reach. However, many of the students that attended the college fair went away feeling like there were many options for funding and that it was not out of reach for them. This type of
Simply being invited to become a member of the National Honor Society is a privilege. It’s not necessarily surprising to me that I was invited but rather gives me an exhilarating feeling. A part of me now knows that my sedulous efforts have finally paid off. Throughout my high school career so far I’ve exhibited the four pillars, which are scholarship, leadership, character, and service. This organization administers a plethora of opportunities that has an impact on the students and the lives of others especially. To be accepted into the National Honor Society would motivate me to contribute even more to not only our school but also the community.
Although Career Fair isn’t a new thing for me, but it was the first time I actually attend it. Before going to the Career Fair, I checked my mail and clicked the link of the Career Fair website provided by CoB Newsletter. Internet provides a great platform for research. First, I looked up the attached form of the companies that are coming. The site was very organized and provided different information sheet for students with different majors. I downloaded the Business Major version and glanced through the page. Then I narrowed down the lists by crossing the companies that requires specific majors. Due to different cultural background, I couldn’t tell some well-known companies by name. So I picked several companies that I’ve already heard of. I then googled the companies, and took a look at their websites. In addition, I went to see reviews and news about those companies. I also tried to search them in Chinese search engine to see their reputations through an international view. After that, I went to Recruit-A-Duke looking for information they provided about the positions they are offering. I evaluate them by the positions they offer, and are they providing internships during the summer. Last, I weigh them by how interesting the jobs are.
The main two ways that I believe that I have grown this year are athletically and academically. Both have helped me to better understand what I might want to do when I grow up. 8th grade just happened to be my very first year ever playing an organized sport. I also made starter for all but one game that season. On the academic side, my 8th grade year was one of my worst school years ever. 9th grade however, had me turning over a new leaf of academic excellence.
My time spent in the Clinical setting, so far, has been extremely inciteful as to how to become a better educator in a classroom setting. Through the data I collected I was able to connect Borich’s Seven Variables of learning to the students. By being in the clinical setting for nearly two months, I have been exposed to new ways of thinking when it comes to structuring a classroom and instructing a classroom. Within this reflection you will find out how I would better plan an effective lesson for the pupils in my future classroom. You will also discover what I will do about certain issues in the classroom and how I will address/fix them.
Understanding the process of getting to college can be a very difficult process. But when you essentially bring the college to the student that takes away a bit of the stress. For my capstone I will be hosting Riverside's first annual College Fair. A college fair would be very useful and it would help the underclassmen with their impending decisions. I want to help them by informing them about colleges and what they need in order to pursue a higher education.. Every class will only need about an hour to speak to the representatives. I know that most freshman don’t really understand what colleges look for and how they may obtain that information. With representatives from colleges coming and taking the time to speak with students that helps
After a hectic first semester at the community college, I began to find myself. I realized that the four-year university I wanted to attend initially, would have not been a good fit for me. Being part of different student organizations and creating connections with my professors at the community college is what helped me find what I was really looking for. I wanted a place where I felt like I mattered and not a school with fifty thousand students where I would just feel like a number. The additional semester I got to stay home, I was able to do more research and find a university where I would fit in and connect with.
Union Middle School started a skills success program for all students during a homeroom type class that meet twice a week. I collaborated with another teacher in creating a program focusing on th students’ soft skills: organization, goals, time management.
I have given quite a few speeches in the last few years, even at such a young age. Though I was proficient when I started this class, I have improved even more in these last six weeks. My strengths definitely fall in my organization and content. However in my delivery I often lack in vocal variety and volume, mostly due to nerves, and I often rushing my conclusions. Due to the rank I have in organizations like the National Honor Society, I will often have to speak in public or address my peers so I plan on continuing to practice for my speeches out loud and hopefully I will improve.
Upon looking back at my honors experience at Elgin Community College, I vividly remember the first honors class that I attended, American Government, or POS 150. I remember being extremely nervous to attend this class. At this point in my ECC career, I still doubted myself when it came to my academics and what I was capable of. I kept thinking that I was going to fail my honors class and ruin my honors experience. What I soon came to realize was that this class was going to be something completely different than the traditional classes that I had taken before. The setting of this class was mostly discussion, lecture, and reflection. We had our textbook, Democracy for the Few, and each week we were instructed to read a chapter and then come to class ready to discuss and share our ideas.
Thankfully, I have had a successful semester this Fall. Although my first semester in college started off shaky and caused me to have my fair share of doubts about City College, I am proud to say I finished this semester strongly with a 3.8 GPA. City College has started to grow on me and I have luckily got used to my hour and a half train ride to school from Brooklyn. One of the things that have made me start enjoying college more was the Intervarsity chapter at City College. It would be an understatement for me to say that this club has had a great impact in my life for the few months I have been a member. I have also joined the SSSP Fusion club which is a small club that focuses on community engagement. Although I joined the club late in
Prior to entering high school, The National Honor Society was a program I was unaware of. However, upon further inspection of the program and its standards, I instantly felt it was a place I belong. Applying and becoming a member has been something I have planned and worked for ever since the beginning of freshman year, and I am honored to be able to apply and be considered.
I enjoyed the Freshman Convocation, it was really nice how I got to see other Freshman's at the City College of New York, Class of 2020. I liked the way all the speakers walked in the entrance with their gown and enjoyed listening to their powerful speeches. I was able to learn more about the City College programs and the different sections that they have presented in this college. I was able to see the President and Vice President of City College and listen to their great enthusiastic speeches. Also, all the other staff who is also involved in the organization of other programs at City College. However, it felt like Graduation when sitting at the Freshman Convocation with the music, entrance, opening speeches, and singing the National Anthem
I look forward to moderating the College Board workshop in English Literature next Monday in Indianapolis. I am attaching a folder of documents that I will be using during the workshop. The folder may seem a bit overwhelming. We will not get around to using the entire folder I am sure, but I put it together last summer for an institute I led in Minneapolis and, since I believe one could always use extra lesson plans, I might as well send the whole shebang. We are also limited as to the amount of paper copies we can use per registrant, so I only copied papers that I would ask you to notate or that you would want for ready reference in the future.
My contribution to the course material was as follows; First, I conducted a meeting with my team to divide the tasks and set the criteria of the work that needed to be done. Second, after receiving the individual’s deliverables I performed QA and provided both positive feedback and constructive criticism. Third, after providing feedback some team members were reluctant to accept them, so I stepped in and rewrote tables that were not clearly visible, wrote notes on the slides that contain tables and figures that didn’t have any, adjusting the overall format, and selecting a background of the presentation.
I feel that I had an exceptional freshman fall semester. Throughout the semester I attended meetings of various organizations such as African Student Association, Maryland Association of Black Journalists, Real Talk, and The Collective UMD (of which I joined the E-board). At the end of the semester, I finished with a 3.87 GPA. Not only was I able to stay on top of my grades, but I was also able to explore, which is essential for freshman. During the fall, I was able to find out what worked for me and what did not work for me in terms of interests and study habits. For instance, I realized my Math 111 TA was not very useful, and so I decided to sit in another Math 111 class with a different teacher for most of the semester. I ended the class with an A, which was also attributed to study groups and tutoring from AAP and OMSE. I feel that the summer transitional program and AAP prepared me for a heavy workload which made my classes more manageable, adding to the fact that I was only taking 12 credits. In the fall, I was able to grasp the college experience in one semester and try my best which is why I feel I did well.
