I am a recent graduate of Baker College of Flint online program, earning both my Associates and Bachelors degree in business administration majoring in Human Resource Management. For the past twenty five years I have been working as an operations manager. Today I work for a non profit organization overseeing a team of twenty employees. I graduated high school at age sixteen; looking back, I didn’t think I had too many options when it came to continuing my education. I grew up as the youngest of eight children in a single parent family unit, who would experience financial hardship and make ends meet by receiving a lot of hand me downs. Attending school every day was essential not because of education, but because it was a way for my siblings and me to be guaranteed to eat a healthy meal at least five days a week. My mother worked hard and long hours, which meant there was no time for learning or getting any help with school work. I was not a very good student and the majority of people, including my high school teachers did not anticipate me furthering my education as an adult. The premise would be that I get married and start a family and that’s exactly what I did. Three years after graduating high school, I married an American soldier and moved to the U.S. My past job experiences and job skills were limited, so I decided to enroll in a dental assistant program at a local trade school, thinking college was out of the question. I was determined to do well; I
After high school my main focus went into finding a full time job to support myself and my family. I started a family early and I tried to take college
I knew that having some basic background knowledge of the dental world would be very important considering being accepted in to dental hygiene school. As I grew very proficient within my assisting duties a hygienist in the office I worked for asked if I would want to be her personal dental hygiene assistant. I was so thrilled that I was given such an opportunity. I immediately started paying attention to the details of how she performed her job. In our down
As I’m slowly growing up and transitioning into a young adult, I’ve realized that i don’t want to finish high school, just to enroll in school again. I don’t want to be waking up spending my days working minimum wage. I see so many teens who graduate high school and end up working at Burger King and McDonalds, I’m not saying it’s a bad place to work but having our hours valued at eight or nine dollars is not how i want to be living. Majority of people are living paycheck to paycheck trying to make ends meet. I also chose this
I will admit it; in high school and for a few years after, I had no interest in attending college. It was my belief people could succeed without a college degree if they worked hard enough. I still wholeheartedly believe that. However, I have come to the realization I am not one of those people.
I graduated high school in 1998 and never went to college after high school because I didn't have the confidence in myself to attend. During the next couple decades, I held a series of low-wage jobs such as a fast food worker, grounds keeping cleaning bathrooms at an amusement park, general office type work like reception and data entry and even a stint in retail Never had any idea what my calling was supposed to be.

My desire to go to dental school began to develop in my mid-teens while working at Plainview Oral and Maxillofacial Associates (Plainview Oral). Not only was I fortunate enough to obtain a dental assistant position, over the past six years ago, Dr. Bass, a recognized oral surgeon in the community, took me under his wing. Under his guidance, I developed a strong appreciation for the skills required to be a successful dentist, as well as the caring and patience needed to gain a patient’s trust. What started out as a summer position, eventually evolved into year round employment as my interests heightened and their appreciation of my work and dedication grew. My strong work ethic only increased as I began to understand the vital role
After leaving the public school system at sixteen, I was left with very few options and yet still had a strong desire to continue with my education. After discussing my situation with
Dropping out of high school and getting my GED is one of my only true regrets in life. Although I wish I had finished, I’m thankful my grandmother pushed me to get my GED and not to just give up on school entirely. School was not something our parents brought us up to respect or dedicate ourselves to. By the time I reached high school, the only thing that was important to me was working full time and staying as far away from home as possible. I started legally working at 14, (and illegally working when I was 12) while in high school and worked as many hours as I was legally allowed. When I was 17 I was offered a full time Account Manager position which paid me enough to pay rent. My grandparents agreed to help me buy a townhouse since I had
When I turned 29 I decided that the best way to increase my income would be to attend college. Before I made this decision I worked in various factory setting for a few years. During my factory experience I gained insight to many different cultures and types of people, but I felt I was missing something in my life. I decided to obtain my GED and enroll in college. As I entered Ohio University for the first time I had no idea what I wanted to major in.
While attending school, I worked at the Foreign Language Center as a Director Assistant, from December 1998 to October 2000. Initially, I wanted to work for a non-profit organization and/or an international organization, however that changed through time. A year later after graduating, I was offered to work as an accounting assistant for a seafood company in Margate, Florida. I came back to USA to work for the seafood company and with the intention to pursue a Master’s Degree. Because I was not ready financially, I did not pursue my Master’s Degree then. Instead, I signed up for accounting classes at Broward College while working as an accounting assistant. After a year of working at the seafood company, I was promoted to Bookkeeper/Office Manager. I continue taking accounting classes and business classes at Broward College. Then after working for the seafood company for about four years, I was hired by JTS Turbine a Division of Siemens and joined the accounting department in Boca Raton, Florida. Later, my career slow down, I became a mother and serviced a few clients from home on a part time
I'm currently a student at Troy University in Montgomery, with an Associates in General Education, pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Global Business.
I view higher education as an incredible privilege, one that I never thought I would be able to attain. So many students take this opportunity for granted or view it as a chore, but in my case I never thought it would be possible for me to feel educated and secure in my knowledge. I am attending Bob Jones University in South Carolina, a liberal arts university. This experience has pushed me farther than I had ever imagined. My parents were separated my sophomore year of high school which no doubt left us all in turmoil both emotionally and financially. I was homeschooled at the hand of my mother until then and had never truly experienced a routine academic atmosphere. My mother never pushed us to do school or really took much of any responsibility
We go through 12 years of schooling before we reach college. Some may feel as if high school is it for them and they have retained all of the information they need and have learned the proper amount of knowledge needed in order to be successful in life. However, for others, their path in life is different. Some need to further in knowledge in order to have a career in higher paying jobs, for example, if you want to be brain surgeon, I’m pretty sure you cannot obtain a career of that nature just off of a high school diploma. That is definitely common knowledge, of course you’re going to need to further your schooling in order to obtain the skills and tools needed in order to be successful in that career path.
As I continue to reevaluate my life and all that I had dreamed and hoped for myself when I reach my mid thirties, I did not think I would be still in school trying to get an education. Reflecting back on my past experiences and decisions I made I would have done a lot of things different. Life seems to bring about maturity, perseverance and determination in people and I believe at this point in my life I am determined to succeed because I have been battling a college degree on and off for the past 15years. Pretty sad to admit but reality has finally set in and I have decided that
