Colonization on Mars
costs six billion dollars just to send a couple of people to Mars. The people in which are organizing this expedition say it can be done by 2027. Colonizing Mars is a terrible idea, since people are risking their lives, there is not a natural source of water on Mars, and it costs a tremendously outrageous price to reach Mars.
The participants that are going to Mars are risking their lives. Since the trip to Mars will be 8 months long, and when they land on Mars the participants may only survive 68 days. These participants are risking their lives to go to Mars when this expedition could easily fail, by going off course ,losing power, or any various sequence of events. By going to Mars these participants may never walk again or run due to their bones weakening while in space. The participants that are possibly going to Mars may die or not be able to enjoy their

It is an extremely well known fact that humans need water to survive. There is dry ice on Mars , though if that evaporated it would only make the atmosphere thicker. There is a way to use urine as water, though that is certainly disgusting water, and you would be expected to drink that water everyday if you were in space. Mars has an average temperature of minus eighty-one degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore humans should never colonize Mars under these circumstances.
It is unbelievably expensive to reach Mars. To reach Mars the cost is billions of dollars to send just a couple people to Mars. It will cost more than 4 times the money it took to reach the Moon to reach Mars, since Mars is so far away. Furthermore it would cost way too much money, and therefore NASA or any other international space station should not send astronauts to Mars. Compared to the amount of money it takes to reach the Moon this expeditions cost is outrageous. If we obtain the money for this expedition and it fails, billions of dollars would be
But what about a planet more than 200 times farther away. If we can colonize on Mars the whole world will believe that anything's possible. People will never give up and keep trying to reach their goals. Although people on Earth may be mad that scientist used 6 billion dollars, but it went to good use. It was used to giving hope and making people believe. Now we should go reach our dreams by going to Mars.
Imagine going on a six billion dollar rocket ship and never seeing your family or friends again. The astronauts will risk their lives because it is a dangerous expedition and could easily fail if the people die from lack of oxygen. Colonizing Mars is a terrible idea there is no natural source of water, if Mars One sends them they cannot come back once they arrive there, and someone could get sick and die before they get there.
Visiting Mars is even harder than that, with a whole additional set of problems. We can probably visit Mars in the next 20-30 years, but colonization is something on a much larger scale that we really don't have the resources available to do, unless we're willing to make substantial sacrifices, and continue those sacrifices since an off-world colony won't be anywhere near self-sustaining. The Moon will likely be the first bases in our lifetimes, and possibly Mars. Serious colonization of either isn't likely for decades at
Added to the economic costs to America, a venture to Mars causes substantial risk to the society. The environment and society are very important to human survival on Earth. Even though some people feel that exploring Mars may help understand the Earth better, and going to Mars will be a great scientific milestone, in my opinion exploring Mars is a bad idea. The atmosphere on Mars is about 100 times thinner than earth and it is not suitable for us to breath. It contains about 95% of carbon dioxide and little or no oxygen. This will make it very difficult for humans to survive there. Unlike Mars, which is not protected and is exposed to everything, the Earth is protected by the ozone layer. Exploring Mars will be dangerous to humans and very expensive to taxpayers. This will take years of planning and the mission will take years instead of days. The astronauts who go there may run out of oxygen and even fall sick. They will be unable to just return at any time. They have to wait until the earth aligns with Mars before they can return. All this could take months or even
That is a question many people ask and have been asking for quite a long time. Is the answer just because the process is taking a long time or is the reason bigger then that? According to news.nationalgeographic.com “humans put all of their ideas and efforts into working on the mission but they've never left the drawing board.” NASA’s preparation for the trip to Mars has taken at least 70 years (Heres Why, 2017). Many people are still scared about new missions because they're reminded of the Apollo 1 tragedy in 1967. There are many problems that humans could face if they went to Mars such as, they will need enough water, food, oxygen, etc. There is also the risk of being exposed to radiations from spending years in space (Choi, 2017). “It’s a choice, not an imperative” says John Logsdon a professor at the George Washington University’s space policy institute, many may have the same beliefs as him, but one day traveling to Mars could become an imperative and humans need to be ready and prepared for that day (Heres Why, 2017).
The Mars One company, is a private non-profit organization. Because the mission was announced two years ago, it has yet to reach its full potential. According to Neil deGrasse Tyson, an astrophysicist and director at the Hayden Planetarium, the Mars One mission seems very unrealistic because of the timescale that they have provided (Tyson.) The Mars one team plans on having the first four individuals land on the surface of the planet by 2027. This timescale is unequivocally unrealistic due to the fact that it takes several years to train astronauts, develop the space suits, and test the necessary equipment. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration it takes approximately two years to individually
Fortunately, if the effort pays off, humanity could have a new home after Earth is no longer habitable. While the criticisms do bring valid points as to the difficulties of space travel and colonization, they can be overcome with mankind’s technology, the resources already present on Mars, and old-fashioned human ingenuity. India has developed a method to drastically decrease the cost of space missions, and SpaceX has successfully re-launched a previously used rocket; with their contributions, a Mars mission no longer has to break the bank. Thanks to NASA, colonists will be able to sustain themselves for a considerable amount of time using oxygenators and water reclaimers, ensuring they have breathable air and clean water. Pockets of geothermal energy beneath the surface will provide the key to powering a large colony long enough for nuclear plants to be established. Finally, plants can not only be grown in Martian soil once the proper nutrients have been added, but those plants will thrive in an atmosphere with a high CO2 content, which can be controlled with pressurized greenhouses. Colonizing Mars will be no easy task, but because of the contributions of scientists across the world, it is a task that is no longer considered
“We have the knowledge. We have the technology. We just need to get going.” - Ellen Stofan, NASA. As Americans, our first time landing on the moon with humans was in 1969,after 7 years of extreme advancement in technology. Since then, we have not sent humans any farther [nasa.gov]. Sure, we’ve sent rovers to Mars and those rovers are still there. We’ve attempted to reach Venus and Mercury but were incinerated on the surface. Plus Venus and Mercury are way too close so it’s a melting pot for anything that goes there. That leaves NASA with one more goal--Mars. NASA needs to get astronauts there so we can complete testing with the the weak radiation barrier that Mars has and the living conditions on the red planet. Overall, finally sending
“There’s as much chance of repealing the Eighteenth Amendment as there is for a hummingbird to fly to the planet Mars with the Washington Monument tied to it’s tail” said Morris Sheppard. In my opinion we don’t need a man mission to Mars. A man mission to Mars is way too dangerous. First, it is way too cold on Mars for any living thing.
NASA should not send people to Mars because of health dangers. According to NASA Human Research Program, "exposure to radiation could increase your lifetime risk for cancer" ("The Human Body in Space"). Being in Space has many health effects such as cancer. It would not be a good idea to travel to Mars knowing astronauts can possibly get this deadly disease. Furthermore, going to Mars will damage mental health.
NASA claims that if it's something we work for, we are only decades away from sending people to Mars. Mars is the fourth closest planet to the sun, and it would be the easiest planet for humans to construct a habitat on. While Venus is closer to Earth in size than Mars is, it's extreme pressure would make it very difficult to set up a self-sustaining habitat, making Mars a far more practical choice for a non-Earth colony. In addition to not having an extremely dense atmosphere like Venus, Mars also has frozen water. Colonists on Mars could obtain and melt the ice, making it unnecessary to send large amounts of water ahead of time from Earth. Another advantage of Mars is that it's soil might be able to grow crops. Like the water, this would
The ticket price varies from corporation to corporation, rocket to rocket, and government to government, but it is always expensive. Is it worth it? Once humans settle on Mars, sustainability will not be simple. Exports, salaries, and cost of living are unknown, and not guaranteed. Government on Mars could go in many different directions, whether it is anarchist, a colony, or autonomous. A Mars settlement will have many different economic and political aspects to it, and all are
How much money do you think it will take to get to Mars? Is it worth the risk? Well it actually takes more than one trillion dollars to go to Mars. The risks are also very high, if you wanna know the risks keep on reading. It doesn’t even take that long to read. Anyway this essay is about why I think we should not make a home in space.
Once the astronauts land on Mars, their survival will become an experiment. No one has done this before and the astronauts literally have to make food and oxygen from rocks. Life support equipment could fail. Issues might occur that scientists back on Earth haven't even thought of yet. Radiation such as cosmic rays and energy particles from the sun may effect the astronauts. Both types of radiation can severely damage the astronauts DNA, increasing their chance of getting cancer. In addition to, the high risk of travel will decrease the survival chances. During the launch to space the astronauts will be strapped down tightly in a rocket with so much power that it might explode. The rocket might hit space debris and might veer into the sun or in the middle of deep space on a small malfunction. Five point eight percent of space missions have failed. When missions fail, it is often due to crash landings. Since Mars is so far away, and no one has ever been there before, the chances of failure are increased. The Mars One mission is very dangerous, therefore scientists should not try to send humans to
I would not support NASA’s manned mission to mars because of the financial constrains attached with it. Data from several readings suggest that the total cost of the mission is going to be approximately $80 to $100 billion which is definitely a huge amount. A workshop group of more than 60 individuals representing more than 30 government, industry, academic and other organizations has found that a NASA-led manned mission is not feasible with current budget in hand. NASA already spends around $4 billion a year on exploration programs; most of that is devoted to developing the Orion spacecraft and a new rocket that would one day carry astronauts to Mars or other deep-space destinations. This amount of money could be used for present issues like poverty, unemployment that are cause of serious concern for a large group of
