Autism is a brain disorder that can affect a child’s development in the sense that they would have trouble with verbal and nonverbal communication, repetitive behavior, or social interaction in general. Autism can be detected in children ages two to three years old and 1 in every 88 children in America are diagnosed with autism yearly.

Autism Spectrum Disorder was adopted as a categorization in 2013 and begins in childhood and follows throughout the course of a child’s life and is actually a collection of developmental brain disorders. It affects the general population and races but more common in boys than girls. Intellectual disability is characterized limited intellectual function and adaptive behavior in everyday practical and social skills, thus autism is an intellectual disability (HHSO, 2014).

Autism is not a disease, or a reaction; it is a developmental neurobiological differences in brain function. People with autism have difficulty with communication and interaction with others. The symptoms of autism may range from total lack of communication with others to difficulty in understanding others’ feelings. Since there is such a range of symptoms it is now called Autism Spectrum Disorder(Disabled world 2008)
