What are examples common reports that are used by law enforcement agencies?
You record the facts. There isn’t any investigation, and you don’t make an arrest. Its something called Type 1which includes incident reports, missing persons, and many non-violent offenses. In most cases you will secure the facts from witnesses, victims, and suspects. It’s normally a great idea to write a separate paragraph for each person you talk to. In addition to recording the facts, as in the first example, you add your own investigation: Looking for footprints, fingerprints, the point of entry or exit, or other types of evidence.

Pretend that you are a storyteller. It is important to write a report that flows and is in chronological order. Document step-by-step what has happened. While you write, pretend you’re telling a story to someone who is not there. Start from the beginning and you work through it. Be clear and brief; there is no need to be wordy. Don’t skip certain characteristic that will leave small holes in your report that would give your reader questions.
An example of a storyteller is you are writing, you think about little things that tie the story together. We know the prisoner was troublesome on the housing unit, and they get handcuffed and taken to a holding cell.
Do not use police jargon or big words. There is no need for anything but simple, plain English. Police jargon or big words does not constitute a better report. Sometimes big words can complicate a report.
Be sure to include statements. Statements from inmates are pertinent not only to an incident that has occurred but can also show what an incident is about. Inmates’ words are not only important but can really provide imagery to how an incident
