According to the Dictionary.com, communism is defined as a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party. Communism was the form of the government in Albania until 1992. As Albania transitioned from communism to democracy, communism has caused the poverty, which is one of the biggest struggle Albania has ever faced. Although the government changed its form to democracy, the influences of Communism still remain causing the nation to suffer from its unstable economy and poverty.
Ever since Communism ended after the election in 1992, Albania has been struggling to recover its economic status. Unlike the past years, where all the jobs were provided for citizens by the government, now people have to look for their own jobs. Teaching people to be independent from the government and to find out what they are going to do for the rest of their life was a struggle which still continues today. It is also the country many people do not pay attention to. However, Albanians were the ones who were determined to change the government to the right form where more voices can be heard, even if their way to do it risked their life. Even though at this point, transitioning the form of government can be seen as a bad idea, it was the choice for citizens to gain more rights. Today in Albania, people became more free to express their own feelings and opinions. According to Freedom House, Albania gained three (one being best, seven being the worst) in civil liberties in this year. It is the result of great improvements compared to the year of 1998, when Albania scored five in the same category.
