The DSA is the largest socialist group in the United States, with 62 chapters across the country, including a chapter in Philadelphia.the DSA has about 7500 to 8000 members but they are growing expeditiously, due to the fact that they are one of the major Socialist organizations working around the Bernie Sanders campaign, although they are not officially coordinating with the campaign, but are running independently.
The rise in popularity of Democratic presidential hopeful, Bernie Sanders, has given the concept of socialism more attention lately, especially within younger demographics. The DSA is led by the National Pacific Committee (NPC), Philadelphia’s own Joseph Schwartz is a member of the NPC’s 16 member body, and a professor of Political Science at Temple University.

Rosa Luxemburg, a massive figure in socialist history, said in “the Russian
Revolution” on dissent in socialism;
“Freedom only for the members of the government, only for the members of the Party — though they are quite numerous — is no freedom at all. Freedom is always the freedom of dissenters”.
Showing that governments while insuring people’s social rights, and basic liberties should not be silencing their citizens. Since the freedom of speech is one of the many pillars holding up socialist societies. The question that Socialists impose on governments is; who is controlling the state?
And for what purpose? If the person who is controlling the state isn’t doing it to advance democracy, civil liberties and social rights then that person, to a socialist, is not fit for control.
With the rise of pseudo-fascist ideology, with a xenophobic center, within the
“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear” (George Orwell). Whether the opinion is of extreme offense or not, censorship is not the answer nor is the limitation of the freedom of speech. Emerging the truth, can only be possible through the opposition of ideas, thus with no boundries, the full protection of freedom of speech is a necessary quality of any society.
Freedom of speech gives people The right to free speech, which is one of the most precious rights an individual has as a citizen of the United States of America. This right gives people the opportunity to speak their mind and give their opinions of what they think should happen. These rights have been questioned and exercised throughout history and have produced extremely positive things in a lot of cases. The questioning of these rights are
1. The measure of a great society is the ability of its citizens to tolerate the viewpoints of those with whom they disagree. As Voltaire once said, “I may disagree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” (Columbia). This right to express one's opinion can be characterized as “freedom of speech.” The concept of “freedom of speech” is a Constitutional right in the United States, guaranteed under the First Amendment to the Constitution:
The right to freedom of speech as one of the fundamental human rights is enshrined in The Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is consisted of the freedom to speak, think and express oneself without censorship. Freedom of speech constitutes the essential foundations of a democratic society and the basic conditions for its progress and for the development. One of most important functions of the right to freedom of speech is that decision-making at all levels is preceded by discussion and consideration of a representative range of views. It enables the public to participate in making decisions based on the free flow of information and ideas. A decision made after adequate consultation is likely to be a better one which less imperfectly reflects
Free speech is the backbone that holds democracy together. Without a free speech, ideas would not be challenged, governments would not be kept in check, and citizens would not be free. John Stuart Mill said once that, “If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person then he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.”( Roleff, 21). The right to free speech is essential to “egalitarian democracy,”(Tsesis) however, this right is not absolute and must be limited in certain situations.
Under “Rules for Radicals” by Sol Alinsky there are 8 levels of control that must be obtained before you are able to create a socialist/communist State. The first is the most important.
Freedom of Expression was influential in political participation. With Freedom of Expression, citizens were able to openly agree and disagree with policies and programs created by the government. However, people such as the press, society’s leaders, and public officials were less likely to do so due to their large role and for fear of being criticized. The problem that arose then was that the political leaders often suppressed unpopular minority opinions. This meant that the minority was usually not supported largely in the government and
Shannon made the arguments that the that the Socialist Party of America had a turbulent origin made up of a very wide variety of individuals from different regions of the nation. He also asserted that the party members could scarcely agree on policy and was made up of members ranging from conservatives to radicals. Shannon then shows how the party gained in statue to become a force which made the major parties give concessions to progressives. Yet another point he made was that the party was damaged by world war I and other events in Europe. Many Americans think that Socialist and communist are the same thing but Shannon shows that not only were they different they fought each other. How the party moved from left to right is also a phenomenon he explores. An entire chapter of the book is dedicated to one person alone, Norman Thomas. Another topic he brings up is He showed how the party operated during the great depression as well. The last to chapters show how the party reacted to the new deal and the death of the party as a factor in national
Many people have gone to court questioning exactly what freedom of speech means, and through these cases, it’s been made clear that this freedom does not exist in all situations. For example, you cannot say something that would put people in danger or create disorder. A common example of this being yelling fire in a movie theater, but it also includes things like destroying draft cards and making public private material. Another point is that, although the government might not punish you for saying certain things, other people may have the right to. For instance, if a school tells you not to say something, and you do, the school has full right to discipline or expell
Free speech is a fundamental piece of American society; however, it has become a very controversial idea. In recent years several “free-speech” protests have risen, many breaking out in violence. With all the arguments about free speech erupting in America it is important to keep in mind that the first amendment is very broad, and has very few and very specific limitations; thus, very seldom does an individual person or group have the right to stop another from speaking.
Many millennials in the twenty-first century still support the idea of socialism, especially the so-called “democratic socialism” that was proposed by Senator Bernie Sanders in the 2016 election - they support Sanders’ economic plan, regardless of its disappointing history. The reason for this is simple: today’s young adults are ignorant to the repercussions and flaws in the logic behind it. It is necessary to fully understand why authoritarianism is defective, something that Meltzer explains using logic: “His [Sanders] main proposals demand higher taxes on the highest incomes, free college
There are so many countries around the world where their citizens do not have freedom. One of these countries is Argentina. According to Luisa Valenzuela’s short story The Censors, “He knows that they examine, sniff, feel, and read between the lines of each and every letter, and check its tiniest comma and most accidental stain.” (Valenzuela). This shows that the government of Argentina was controlling what they said, eliminating their freedom of speech. Thus, the citizens were not free to say what they wanted to and they would have to fight for that right of freedom of speech and many others rights.
Marx understanding of society shift into modernism lead to develop a form of communism that would come to be known as Marxism, communism is the economic thought of Marxism. Marx understands that Modernism calls for society to embrace equality for the betterment of society. Part of the problem with Capitalism comes from its exploitation of the working class; Marx understands this problem to be a vein of Pre-modernism and not a pillar of Modernism. Marx calls for the working class to rise up over their bourgeoisie oppressors and seize the equality that rightfully belongs to them. “Society as a whole is more and more splitting up into two great hostile camps, into two great classes directly facing each other – bourgeoisie and proletariat. (Communist pg. 9)” If society wants to embrace modernism, then society needs to shift its focus from fighting each other and one exploiting another to a classless society. Marx highly criticizes the bourgeoisie in The Communist Manifesto, and this stems from the problems they created for themselves and for the rest of society. In their attempt to gain more power, land, and resources, their material conditions, upon the prominence which their families had been formed, were dissipating due to the lack of foresight and selfish greed. If the Bourgeoisie continues to exploit the proletariat then society will head to conflict, as is expected of Pre-modernism, but if the Bourgeoisie cease its exploitation and relinquish its power for the group,
Communism is socioeconomic system. A socioeconomic system means everyone is a whole or society is whole. It was meant to be very selfless. People were meant to work together. There was no private properties so everything was public. It is different from marxism because marxism is mainly about the dictator having total control over everything. Communism has transformed into Marxism-Leninism. This is why today we see communism as a negative rather then a positive. The original comunism meant that eveyone had to share and help one another. If someone wanted something they usually got it. The government and people were
Words are the very top of every food chain that has ended in violence or disaster. Words shape the ideas, view-points, and overall morality of every decision that is made, weather it be a bad or a good decision. Word such as God for example; bring happiness and security to the average human. On the contrary, words like evil set a uncomfortable, unstable, negatively resonating vibe that begins to make us feel uneasy. The word communism initially has the same effect, however when people hear this word all they think of is history class and Russia. No one truly understands the evils and misunderstood fallacies, communism is truly evil and all of its internal endeavors reach into every aspect of society changing it forever.
