Police have a big role to fill when trying to maintain peace in society. According to the National Institute of Justice, “Community Policing is a model that creates partnership with the community and addresses underlying problems (Pollock 185).” Without the partnership, the relationship between police officers and the community would be a bit complicated, especially when it comes to dealing with a diverse community. A diverse community is a community that has different kinds of race and different cultures. There are Hispanics, African Americans, Asian, Chinese, and Caucasian and so on. What all races have in common is that they each want respect, equal rights, and acceptance from police officers. “Bill of Rights were added to the Constitution …show more content…
Used interchangeably with problem-oriented policing (Swanson 39).” Unfortunately, not all police officers follow community-oriented policing. “While the structure and function of policing in a democratic society is itself a source of conflict and problems (as Skolnick and others have documented), the kind of individuals involved in police work certainly play a role in the overall good and bad behavior of the institution (Asirvatham 45).” Some police officers tend to treat each race differently or single out one race just because they have a higher rate of crime done within that …show more content…
The only way that can be done is if the police are more diverse because of the diverse communities. If police officers knew more about each race or culture, it may be a lot easier for them to get through different situations that deal with each culture. Each person, race, and culture live differently and maybe have different ways of dealing with certain situations. For example, there was a situation where police were looking for an Asian man. They showed up to a house and a younger guy answered the door. The police asked him if he has seen or heard from the guy they are looking for, but the guy turned around and yelled out in his language. As seen it from a police perspective, police thought he was trying to help the person escape by telling him the police were there, but actually he was calling for his grandmother. As for their culture, the oldest person in the house is the one that speaks for them. Since police did not know that, they just ran in the house, putting people down on the floor and caused a big situation. The whole community were Asians so they started to go against the police. It was a big battle against police officers and the community. This situation could have turned out a lot better if the police would have taken time out to learn about different cultures. With the communities being diverse, the complications of situations are different and police will need to be very prepared to
The violence that some officers exude to minorities should only be used in extreme, desperate situations not when a teen steals some cigars or is walking home with a hood on. Besides showing an interest in racial justice and issues of race helps to break down barriers, exposed as false perceived misunderstandings, and shed light on commonly held perceptions of a race-infused
The justice department today is spending millions of dollars to better train the police department against bias and examine law enforcement procedures, known as community policing. Community policing has been slowing evolving over the years. The civil rights movement exposed how weak the system was in the 1960’s. The development of the model has been inspired by
Another factor in conflicts with this nation’s police force is the differences in races between American neighborhoods and their police force. In order to reduce the presence of racism in law enforcement, the race and ethnicities of the police force must be representative of the population they are responsible
Community relation issues across the nation have been increasing and causing many conflicts between law enforcement and communities. There has been so much disorder between communities and law enforcements not agreeing on how situation have been handled. Both the community and law enforcements having different perspectives on making decisions without ever looking at the others side and acknowledging each other’s reasoning behind their actions. Racism, responsibility and morals are some of many terms that are yet to be sorted out within all these communities that have on going conflicts. The relationships between a community and its law enforcement is important, although it is the police job to enforce, it is also the communities job to enforce all day and everyday (Russell).
The public police are the primary crime-fighting organization in the government and it is necessary for police and the public to respect one another (Roberg & Novak, 2014). To rebuild trust with law enforcement, communities should educate themselves about their rights. This will allow them to know what exactly law enforcement can ask for and what they must or not answer when it comes down to simple traffic violations or any minor interaction with law enforcement. It does not matter if the individual is of Mexican, Asian, American, or any other origin, there are rights that every individual has. In the case of traffic stops or encounters with law enforcement in the streets, there are rights in place that everyone should be familiar with to prevent situations that could lead to police using force (ACLU,
The Community Orientented Policing Services wrote about how the events after Ferguson affected the Community Policing aspect for officers on the job. Community Policing is a topic of discussion because people do not like the rules that officers have to follow in their jobs. The services believe that everyone is a leader not just police officers, but they have noticed that the Community thinks they are just followers who give information to the police. From the Wisconsin’s chiefs point of view he states “fully 80 percent of African-American respondents said “yes,” in contrast to 37 percent of White respondents. Three-quarters of African-American respondents said that they had “little or no confidence in the investigations” into the shooting;
A perception that police target members of specific ethnic or racial groups creates a deep divide between the police and the communities we serve. But as an officer who has spent a lot of time patrolling the city's streets, I just don't think the perception is accurate (Dutta
"Relations between the police and minority groups are a continuing problem in many multiracial societies. Surveys consistently document racial differences in perceptions of the police, with minorities more likely than whites to harbor negative views." (Weitzer and Tuch, Race and Perceptions of Police Misconduct, 2004)
Police officers need better training in dealing with minority and learn how to communicate with them. Some efforts have been made by police officers to improve these situations with plans such as community policing. A question we can ask is how do we bring force the law enforcement and the minority communities to build a better relationship between the community and the police? For instance, Officer Tommy Norman, and officer for the North Little Rock Police Department have been doing community policing since he’s been an officer.
African Americans are highly diverse group and a part of this diversity is police profiling, equal rights and discrimination. Individual versus society, blacks, for example are more likely than whites to report having negative interactions with police, to be exposed to media reports of police misconduct, and to live in high-crime neighborhoods where policing may be contentious—each of which increases perceptions of police misconduct. Relations between the police and minority groups are a continuing problem in the United States and other multiracial societies.
To better understand why police target minority's, one must consider the opposition. Many argue that the minority just happen to be coincidently in the wrong place. However, if they would cooperate with the officers and respect them for
Community policing is a philosophy. It uses organizational strategies that support the use of partnerships and problem solving techniques to address issues of public safety.Community-oriented policing is collaboration between the community, organizations within the community, and the police that identify and solve community problems. Police officers work with the community to help solve problems related to crime, fear of crime, social and physical disorder, and neighborhood conditions. They do this to enhance the safety and quality of neighborhoods. Officers spend time in these neighborhoods getting to know the residents and business owners by talking to them about the problems that the community is facing or individuals who are causing problems. They are responsible for reducing crime in their beats.
It has been consistently shown in research that minorities are more likely to be mistreated by the police compared to other people (Dunnaville, 2000). Recent incidents have seen the police use excessive force on people and mistreat minorities. As such, the legitimacy of the police has been put under scrutiny and questioned. Many communities in the United States have demonstrated in reaction to recent incidents of police misconduct and excessive use of force. The people have lost trust in the police because of these issues. The police force has been accused of mistreating people, sexual harassment, violent and careless arrests among people particularly the minorities. As demonstrated in the movie ‘Policing the Police’ police officers are seen mistreating people for instance the scene where the police sexually harassed a teenager by touching sensitive areas. Community members are not willing to trust or work with the police to fight crime. As such, it is critical for the police agencies and department to make improving police-community relationship a top police priority. Policies should be developed that will strengthen the mutual trust between the police and the community. This relationship is critical because the police depend on information from the community to fight crime in the society.
To begin, it is necessary to explicate the concept of a policing model, in order to better contextualize this discussion of community-oriented and problem-solving models in particular. Policing models are used by researchers and police departments alike in order to describe the complex set of motivations, intentions, and strategies used to determine policing policy. Police models "are central entities of thoughts and ideas on policing," and for the most part
Further strides have been made since this period to include a concentrated effort to make police departments more ethnically diverse. Despite becoming more diverse and laws to protect citizens there remains a great deal of distrust of the police among African-Americans and Hispanics. The Rodney King case was and is a lightning rod for those who point to police abuse based on race. Unfortunately, large numbers of African-Americans, Hispanics, and to a lesser degree other ethnic
